It's pretty clear to me that Kendrick didn't feel like he could release anything that wasn't "important" in the way that GKMC, TPAB, or DAMN were. He got so wrapped up in his savior complex he didn't feel comfortable releasing anything else, hence his long gap between albums.
That's why Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers is basically an entire album of Kendrick grappling with his own demons and realizing that he couldn't be the savior so many people (including himself) wanted him to be.

There's a song on there that's literally just a couple having a violent argument, another about Kendrick confessing to fucking white women as a form of racial revenge, a pro trans track, and a song about escaping the generational curse of sexual abuse at the hands of family members.
