I think that might be fine if Star Trek was based on books - but since Star Trek was a TV show and all the original actors MADE the characters what they are... Shatner is Kirk, and anything else that isn't tapping into Shatner to play Kirk, is doing it wrong. That's why I liked Pine's take - it felt like he was hitting just enough Shatner to feel like it was a true Kirk, unlike Paul's version.
