Looks like maybe metamorphic quartzarene. You can see on the right edge the natural curvature this exact rock has had for nearly 420 million years since it was probably formed in the late Plasticene when the T1 and T5 tectonic plates subducted to form the mountain range where these are quarried.
If I were you, I would take that really neat rock, clean it up with some baking soda and vinegar with a toothbrush (firm), let it dry, and then dip it in a 5 minute epoxy. It’ll get a nice clear coat and you can display on a shelf in your bookcase or on your coffee table as a neat conversation starter.

Yes. They have the luxury of seeing the grandchild for moments, without the responsibility of helping him sleep or eat or go to the doctors or navigate development and emotions etc. It’s so easy to love a child for a few moments from a place of security, like a tourist visiting a foreign country. They struggled to behave that way with their own kids (you) because they were young, naive, insecure, stressed perhaps with work, finances, etc and they had to care for you day in, day out, through the happy moments, the mundane moments, and the emotional overload moments. They frequently ran out of patience, empathy, and care treating their own children like lower class objects instead of the wonderful people you were.
