Damn son. Journeyman toolmaker here. My apprentice makes 22 an hour (1st year). My CNC machinist is at 27 an hour. I'm at 35 an hour. I don't know what national average is, but I live in a pretty low cost of living area. If you aren't getting paid what you are worth, find somewhere else and take your skills there.

Yo! Fred Saberhagen was one of my first aside from Tolkien. The book of swords was fantastic (at least as I remember it, that was almost 30 years ago!) Hadn't thought of those books in a long time and it may be time to blow the dust off them.
