Does it ever happen to you, expecially with less experienced players, that you have to explain how a card, a rule, an interaction works and it is a challenge to convince them that it is like that? Sometimes even with basic concepts, like the fact lands are (almost always) colorless or commanders hit their destination before eventually being moved to the command zone.
The other day I had to explain that damage coming from two creatures fighting is noncombat damage, which was relevant since I had a [[Blessed Sanctuary]] in play. In his mind the point was that fighting is a form of combat. It took a couple minutes to have my opponent accept it and he didn't even look that sure about it.
Another time I used [[Gale, Waterdeep Prodigy]] to cast a sorcery at instant speed from my graveyard (by casting an instant cantrip and triggering Gale), and again it took a few minutes to convince my opponents I could do that because Gale is giving me permission to do it. I also brought up the example of [[Oskar]], who does a similar thing by discarding cards. Again I'm pretty sure in the end they accepted it to let the game go on, but I was left with the feeling they thought I was screwing them over.
Does this ever happen to you? Do you have a story to share?
Varina player here!
Wilhelt lends himself more to a more aristocrats-y build, but besides that he's pretty open ended.
Scarab-God screams Zombies with its triggered ability, but I honestly ser it better in the 99 for that. I can see him work better as a commander when built around its activated ability.
Varina is another story. She tells you to attack, and attack quick and a lot. She's an aggro commander. She wants you to turn sideways and sift through your deck. You don't have anything to turn sideways? No problem, that mana you held up for interactions can now be used to get you some units in your army. Otherwise, any 1 or 2 mana Zombie with some upside will do.
Let's be clear: it's a deck in which you most often won't be able to get back any noncreature card from your graveyard. Those are just fodder to exile for more Zombies.
You need to learn to discard what you don't need RIGHT NOW. Treat those cards as you just didn't draw them this game.
[[Rooftop Storm]]? Awesome, but you got only four mana available right now. Discard.
[[Tombstone Stairwell]]? Love it, but you got only a couple creatures in your graveyard because you just got it exiled. Discard.
[[Mystic Remora]]? Love having my hand filled, but now I really need [[Ratadabrik]] to give my board vigilance or I will die from the crackback of my attacks. Discard.
[[Living Death]]? Time to start discarding creatures instead. Some good recursion spells will help you get back stuff continuously.
About combos, if you include [[Gravecrawler]] it will combo out with a ham sandwich. Any sac outlet and [[Rooftop Storm]] will give you infinite ETB and death triggers. Or [[Phyrexian Altar]] or [[Warren Soultrader]] (pair this one with something like [[Wayward Servant]]).
[[Gray Merchant of Asphodel]] is always fair game, also considering the deck ends up being mostly black.
I don't have my list ready at the moment (it's lacking few upgrades I made) but let me know if you're interested and I'll fix it asap!
Best zombie commander that actually runs zombies?
