Central Ratsnakes Pantherophis alleghaniensis, formerly called Pantherophis spiloides, are large (record 256.5 cm) common harmless ratsnakes with a multitude of regional color patterns native to eastern and central North America between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River Embayment. Pantherophis ratsnakes are keeled-scaled generalists that eat a variety of prey. They do well in urban environments, and are particularly fond of rodents and birds in these habitats.

Central Ratsnakes P. alleghaniensis are currently recognized as distinct from Eastern Ratsnakes P. quadrivittatus, as well as Western Ratsnakes P. obsoletus and Baird's Ratsnake P. bairdi. Parts of this complex were once generically labeled "black ratsnakes". Use the "!blackrat" command without the space for more on these changes.

Banded Watersnakes Nerodia fasciata are medium (90-110 cm record 158.8 cm) natricine snakes with keeled scales often found in and around water. They are commonly encountered fish and amphibian eating snakes across much of eastern North America.

Nerodia watersnakes may puff up or flatten out defensively and bite. They secrete a foul smelling substance from the cloaca called musk and can deliver a weak anticoagulant venom used in prey handling from the back of the mouth, but are not considered medically significant to humans - bites just need soap and water.

Found throughout southeastern North America, it is replaced in the North by, and likely exchanges genes with, the Common Watersnake Nerodia sipedon. Banded Watersnakes have even, connecting bands across the top of the snake all the way down the body. In Common Watersnakes N. sipdeon, bands typically break up or become mismatched after the first third of the body. The "confluens" color pattern is somewhat of an exception to the even banding rule, but isn't often confused with other species as it is rather distinctive.

Nerodia fasciata along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts in the Southeastern US also exchange genes along environmental ecotones with Saltmarsh Snakes Nerodia clarkii.

Brownsnakes Storeria dekayi are small (20.0-40.0cm record 52.77cm) natricine snakes often found in disturbed habitats like urban and suburban yards. They are one of the most commonly encountered snakes in eastern North America and make good pest control as they feast on small, soft-bodied invertebrates.

A separate but distinct species, Storeria victa occupies peninsular Florida. It has two fewer midbody scales (15) than Storeria dekayi and is more likely to have yellow collar markings on the neck.

Storeria brown and redbelly snakes are not considered medically significant to humans in terms of venom and are usually reluctant to bite, but all animals with a mouth can use it in self-defense.

Plain-bellied Watersnakes Nerodia erythrogaster are medium to large (record 163.6 cm) natricine snakes with keeled scales often found in and around water. They are commonly encountered fish and amphibian eating snakes across much of eastern North America and extend into Northern Mexico.

Eastern Hog-nosed Snakes Heterodon platirhinos are harmless medium-sized (record 115.6 cm) dipsadine snakes with keeled scales native to the eastern North America. A similar species, Heterodon simus is native to the extreme southeastern US. It can be distinguished from Eastern Hog-nosed snake H. platirhinos by a more upturned snout and consistent belly coloration. Adults are relatively small, yet stocky, rarely exceeding 20 inches in length (44-55 cm, record 61 cm). The primary habitats for these snakes are dry uplands - particularly sandhill and scrub biomes - but they may occasionally be found in hammocks or transient wetlands. Like other hog-nosed species, an upturned snout is the defining feature of this snake used to burrow in the sand to search for toads and other small reptiles, which are their primary food source.

Eastern Hog-nosed snakes are highly variable in color, ranging from tan, brown, and olive to yellow and orange. Some individuals are entirely blackΒ . Hog-nosed snakes are known for their impressive threat displays, which can include loud hissing, puffing of the body, mock striking and flattening of the neck, however they rarely actually bite. This incredible act leads to being mistakenly identified as cobras or other dangerous species by people unfamiliar with this behavior. When excessively harassed, hog-nosed snakes are capable of "playing dead", which consists of them rolling onto their backs and hanging their mouths open, throwing their tongue out and spreading a thick musk secreted from the cloaca.

Western Ribbonsnakes Thamnophis proximus are medium sized (51-76cm, record 126.8 cm), slender, New World natricine snakes that range across much of the central US, south through Mexico into Costa Rica. They utilize a wide variety of habitats, but typically stay close to some source of freshwater, where they can find their main prey, frogs and tadpoles. Salamanders, fish, and small lizards are occasionally taken.

When cornered/frightened, T. proximus, like many garter and water snakes, might flatten the head and body to make itself appear larger, bite or pretend to bite, and release a foul smelling musk from the vent. Mild toxins in the saliva may be effective at subduing smaller prey items, but bites are considered harmless to humans.

T. proximus can be differentiated from sympatric garter snakes by the combination of the following characteristics; a proportionally slender body and head, proportionally large eyes, unmarked, light colored labial scales, lateral stripes positioned on scale rows 3 & 4, and a small preocular light marking that contrasts with the darker coloration of the head. The presence of 8 supralabials (upper lip scales), larger, prominent, fused parietal spots, and the absence of ventrolateral stripes help differentiate it from the eastern ribbonsnake, T. saurita, whose range they overlap slightly in the east.

Prairie Kingsnakes Lampropeltis calligaster are medium-sized non-venomous colubrid snakes with smooth scales, part of a group of kingsnakes called the Yellow-bellied Kingsnake species complex. Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes Crotalus helleri are medium-large (70-110cm, up to 137cm) rattlesnakes that range from southern California south to Baja California, MX from near sea level to 3,350m. They utilize a wide variety of habitat, including scrubland, desertscrub, savanna, grassland, coastal dunes, and montane woodland. Where development encroaches on natural areas, they can sometimes also be found in residential and even urban areas. Despite low genetic divergence, some authors treat the dwarfed Coronado Island populations as a distinct species, "C. caliginis."

The activity cycles of C. helleri largely correlate to the weather, and they tend to be diurnal in cool weather, nocturnal during the hottest weather, and crepuscular in between. Rodents form the bulk of the diet, but other small mammals, lizards, and amphibians are also consumed.

Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes are a dangerously venomous species and should only be observed from a safe distance. Red diamond rattlesnakes C. ruber, Mojave rattlesnakes C. scutulatus, and Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes C. atrox usually have more diamond shaped dorsal blotches and the distinctive pale and dark bands ("coon tail") on the tail contrast more sharply than those of C. helleri.

Rough Earthsnakes Virginia striatula are small (record 39.3 cm) natricine snakes found in eastern North America that feed on primarily earthworms.

Rough Earthsnakes are considered harmless to people and pets and rarely bite in self defense. They have keeled scales, a cone-shaped head and pointed snout. The internasal scales that are generally paired in other snakes are fused.

Central Ratsnakes Pantherophis alleghaniensis, formerly called Pantherophis spiloides, are large (record 256.5 cm) common harmless ratsnakes with a multitude of regional color patterns native to eastern and central North America between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River Embayment. Pantherophis ratsnakes are keeled-scaled generalists that eat a variety of prey. They do well in urban environments, and are particularly fond of rodents and birds in these habitats.

Central Ratsnakes P. alleghaniensis are currently recognized as distinct from Eastern Ratsnakes P. quadrivittatus, as well as Western Ratsnakes P. obsoletus and Baird's Ratsnake P. bairdi. Eastern Milksnakes Lampropeltis triangulum are medium-sized (record 132.1 cm) non-venomous colubrid snakes with smooth scales, part of a group of seven species of milk and kingsnakes called the triangulum species complex. Eastern Milksnakes are found in the north and eastern parts of North America. They kill by overpowering their prey and will eat mainly rodents, but are generalists and consume lizards, birds, eggs and invertebrates. Eastern Milksnakes are variable in color - geographic range helps greatly in identification and to distinguish them from other species.

This recent multi-locus work is well done, published in a high-tier journal and was well-received by those who understand the coalescent. It's supported by morphological work (Link 2) and has been adopted by the major North American herp societies.

Bullsnakes / Gophersnakes Pituophis catenifer are large (record 274.3 cm) actively foraging snakes with keeled scales found in a variety of habitats including disturbed areas like suburban yards. They are commonly encountered snakes throughout western North America and make good pest control as they eat primarily small mammals.

Pituophis pine and bull snakes may puff up or flatten out defensively, but are not considered medically significant to humans in terms of venom. They are known for a terrific hissing display when threatened - aided by a epiglottal keel. They are usually reluctant to bite, but all animals with a mouth can use it in self-defense.

Ring-necked Snakes Diadophis punctatus are a group of small (< 50 cm, record 85.7cm in a western specimen) dipsadine snakes with smooth scales native to North America as far south as San Luis Potosí. They feed primarily on soft-bodied amphibians and their eggs. Diet is location specific, with some populations specializing in squamate prey. Ring-necked snakes possess a mild venom that is delivered via specialized rear fangs. This venom is used for prey handling and is not considered medically significant to humans. While Ring-necked Snakes rarely bite in self defense, they may musk, coil the bright underside of the tail tightly in a flash or misdirection display and occasionally play dead.

Diadophis punctatus, while currently described as a single species, likely harbors cryptic diversity. Like many other snakes, subspecies designations are based on morphology and don't track well with evolutionary history of the group. Fontanella et al investigated Diadophis using a mtDNA dataset, revealing structure that seemingly corresponds to populations expanding out of southern glacial refugia after the last "Ice Age" (Pleistocene). This complex is in need of revision using modern methods and samples from populations in Mexico.

Sharp-tailed Snakes Contia tenuis are small (<30cm, record 48.3cm) dipsadine snakes that range from British Columbia south through Washington to California, with a spotty distribution across the northern extent. Contia have smooth scales and inhabit moist areas within woodland, grassy or scrubby areas, suburban backyards and gardens. Secretive and typically found under surface cover during the cooler parts of spring and autumn, these fossorial snakes withdraw underground during dry spells, turning up in rural and suburban dwellings with some regularity. Diet consists of slugs and their eggs, and dentition is specialized with long, recurve teeth common in "goo-eaters" and other slimy prey specialists.

Sharp-tailed Snakes rarely bite and are considered harmless to humans. When frightened or handled they may ball up with the head hidden in the center, poke the handler with the sharp tip of the tail, defecate and release a musk intended to deter predators.

A closely related species, the Forest Sharp-tailed Snake C. longicauda is morphologically similar and best differentiated by range. Where both ranges overlap in northern CA and southern OR, C. tenuis can be differentiated by their lower number of caudal scales (24-42, vs 43-58 in C. longicauda) and shorter tail (~15% of total length, vs ~20%).

Central Ratsnakes Pantherophis alleghaniensis, formerly called Pantherophis spiloides, are large (record 256.5 cm) common harmless ratsnakes with a multitude of regional color patterns native to eastern and central North America between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River Embayment. Pantherophis ratsnakes are keeled-scaled generalists that eat a variety of prey. They do well in urban environments, and are particularly fond of rodents and birds in these habitats.

Central Ratsnakes P. alleghaniensis are currently recognized as distinct from Eastern Ratsnakes P. quadrivittatus, as well as Western Ratsnakes P. obsoletus and Baird's Ratsnake P. bairdi. Parts of this complex were once generically labeled "black ratsnakes". Use the "!blackrat" command without the space for more on these changes.

Ratsnakes can be easily distinguished from racers Coluber by the presence of keeled scales. Racers have smooth scales.
