Hi all. I’m fairly new to backpacking and am thinking I’d like to start spending nights out in the great outdoors. I have a Stratos 24 (a little small, I know, but it seemed like a good starting point for a day pack), a sleeping bag and a bit of other small gear, but I need a tent. Any suggestions? I’d prefer something lighter, I’m not quite ultralight at the moment but I understand the appeal and wouldn’t mind that sort of option. I want a 2P tent because I will be out with my wife or a friend sometimes. I also am open to other suggestions for useful gear! Thanks a lot in advance.
For weather-related considerations I currently live in the Mid-Atlantic US but am soon moving to the Mountain West US.
Totally valid argument! Sorry for the confusion, like I said I’m fairly new to backpacking (only a few times) but I definitely have been outside so I have the gear you mentioned besides a pad and a tent. I have a multi day trip planned soon so I’d like a backpack that can fit in my pack and won’t weigh me down as much for 40 miles. I already know backpacking is for me I just haven’t done a lot of overnights yet so I haven’t needed my own tent. Still, you’re definitely right that it’s easy to fall into a trap of spending too much money. Seeing as I have most of the gear I need already I don’t feel too back about spending a bit more on a nice light tent that will pack small. On the sleeping pad side of things, do you have any suggestions? Like you said, in the mountains it’s important to stay warm and off the rocky ground, but the one I have is pretty thin so if there’s one you like I’d love to check it out:)
