I’m on a reread again and just finished Turn Coat. Savoured how perfectly JB archived a wonderful positive little note at the end after quite some bitter pills. Now I noticed whats next: Changes. It’s maybe the best in the whole series but of course I know what’s coming and shy away from the pain - anybody else felt the same?
I have felt exactly like you and still not found an Urban Fantasy that can compete. I dropped most of the series you mentioned after 2 books - except Alex Verus. But I found Michael J Sullivans Ryiria Series very satisfying, because of well developed characters, interesting twists and a fascinating Meta Story ( can’t find another English word for it right now) Also for me there is always Stephen King as a comfortable fallback. He has written such a lot of books and even if there were some which I didn’t like so much he just is an incredible author who gets to me most times. Overall I find it easier to search alternatives in different genres because I don’t think you can find something similar which hits all the points. So, yes, basically Jim Butcher spoiled Urban Fantasy for me same as Anne Rice did with the Vampire Genre 30 years ago
Learned a lot again- the absolutely right place for a wiseass😀
I don’t think your theory regarding the intake of food checks out because Harry spent quite some time in Faerie during his recovery which obviously also included eating but this didn’t seem to impede his return to the human world
I have to admit the first thought that came to my mind was: this is so American- In most European countries this wouldn’t be an issue because the age for a consensual relationship is between 14 and 16. Nonetheless in this case it would be seen as improper because of the relationship of authority, like between teacher and student. Harry showed exactly that and behaved in a proper way. Then it struck me that it’s even more telling about our current discussions in Social and political fields: they even try to regulate what you are allowed to think and about the opinions you are allowed to have. You get cancelled because of an opinion. What I really find highly irritating and creepy about this post is the name this redditor
Yeah, it’s absolutely peak writing. And as always it also has those amazing and funny parts like finally getting Mouses POV!
Do you really think Harry could have avoided the outcome?
Thank you for the consideration, but no, it doesn’t trigger me in that way. But I think JB did something amazing: he created persons you care for, persons, you want in your life and you don’t want them to have to face something so bad like the things that are coming for Harry - and if course I’m going to read it because this time I wanted to do all the books in one streak to better get the bigger picture. Just wanted to share my preemptive concern for our mutual friend 😉
Sorry, don’t know how to edit: NOT THE AH
You are not TALKING. But I am very sorry for the child who nobody seems to want or care for. I don’t know a lot about CPS in the states but I think they should be involved to make sure the baby is properly cared for
I think the main reason is very well developed in the Age of Myth e.a. Trilogy, where the mechanisms of a continual downbeat of an entire race is thoroughly shown. Mainly it’s the work of one person ( don’t want to spoiler if you haven’t read it yet) who plays with normal human nature and prejudices- meaning the tendency to think badly about people who are different. You can see how elves are gradually excluded from functions and opportunities within society , so it’s a logical step they loose their means of making a decent living. They begin to lose contact with the original frey society and don’t know anything about their own origins and beliefs of superiority. Instead it’s replaced with the belief about themselves as worthless. This mechanism could well lead to a general feeling of depression and despair which leads to giving up on doing anything.
An it reminds me of the exchange with Marcone: „Pretty please…“.. „ …with sprinkles on top“ when Harry has to ask for his support…
Ahh!And I thought all the time it meant some different ingredient than jelly!😆 Thank you!
Sorry, non native speaker here, I too found the this scene turned out quite funny, but I never got the part with prithee- what is does that mean ?
You are right, by coincidence I just listened to that part ( again) right now- I hits especially hard when you’re a parent
I assumed she got all those recipes because she can access the internet
Try the Book regarding the Erlking as a German reader- Jim didn’t get at least the title right- the grammar is completely wrong
I did follow up your recommendation about Daniel Faust and you were right, it’s really interesting. I would like to return the favour and point you towards something which filled the waiting time nicely for me: Michael J Sullivans Riyria Series: it’s closer to high fantasy but with great twists in the way tropes are used- there are elves, dwarves and dragons but in a completely different depiction. The story is epic and heartbreaking but there is a lot of irony and witty banter. Its complexity is at least on par with DF and the best thing: each trilogy inside the series is only published when it is finished.
