It's sensible to match up Switzerland's back three.

The only team that has outplayed them so far is Scotland, by playing a back three with a box midfield.

Offers so little to the attack that he may as well be a converted centre back.

Yeah. I've been able to name a lot of left backs I really like, so it's not like there aren't any out there at all, but they might be as rare as they've ever been.

Shaw, Theo, Mendes, Robertson, Robinson, Grimaldo, Estupiñan, Henry, Davies, Udogie, and Balde.

That feels like the exhaustive list of strong classic left backs. And a few of them are coming off poor seasons, or have been injured.

I find it hilarious how poor Tottenham are defensively when every single member of their back four is so highly rated.

Same boat as Rico Henry. He couldn't even manage 14 90s last season.

Pep knicked the CB fetishism off of Xavi and Arteta. He just ended up better at it.

I think Maatsen, Theo, and Grimaldo are a bit too good offensively to be the classic leftback. Their teams end up alllowing them to bomb forward and adopting a back three. Maatsen even played right wing once or twice.

Theo has been great for France at this tournament in a more reserved role though, and Grimaldo played in a back four for years.

I know he's been really poor this last season though, a bit like Phonsie.

He's not. The Everton fans will tell you he can't make a long pass to save his life.

He erased himself unfortunately. I hope he recovers fully.

I'll also allow Antonee Robinson.

There are hardly any good true left backs around these days. Nuno Mendes and Luke Shaw are the two I rate really highly. Alphonso Davies has gone off the boil. And the rest are either as much centre backs or wingbacks.

That post about Cristiano's heart rate before taking his penalty reminded me of this video from rugby great Dan Carter where he breaks down his technique for resetting mentally ahead of a pressure moment.

Imagine not knowing that Nottingham Forest are a bigger football club than Arsenal.

I recommend this video from the greatest rugby player of all time, Dan Carter. When he steps up to take a kick, he pushes his toes into the ground and pretends he's bare footed and feeling the grass beneath hi feet. That helps him transition from a frenetic mental state to a calm one.

It's one of many simple and replicable techniques to help you calm yourself at a moment of pressure.

I just started watching a lot of football and recognising patterns. Over time you start to see repeats of tactical battles you've seen before and start to realise where the battlegrounds are.

Which footballer is going to out themselves as fash next?

What a class act. Hoping our trébuchet knocks down a few French walls.

What impact will Starmergeddon have on the England camp?

Most teams put out some clips of their training sessions on YouTube.

It depends on turnaround. If it's tight it'll just be recovery and analysis.

A succession of managers haven't rated him at all, and there are some excellent centre backs in the PL, but I'm sure this transfer will end up every bit the success Ronaldo, Casemiro, and Varane were.
