Did you end up taking this trip? Would love to hear how it went and how you booked/what company you used for the nile cruise

Definitely Crete. I just got back from 8 days of solo travel there. Chania is awesome, Samaria Gorge hike, spend a night or two in Loutro. So relaxing and beautiful.

It’s definitely a Tinder-approved pic. Maybe better to avoid selfie for first pic. A lot of girls overdo it with selfies, which shows less personality (or often hides the face)

Good call on Balos boat! You are right. I have that one planned for May 1, so should be okay. But I have a day before that in Chania — does anyone know if seitan limania bus still runs on April 30? If not, any other suggestions of fun ways to spend that day before everything starts to run for May 1 (balos and Samaria gorge are after May 1).

$32 in NYC (and then I tip $8 to a nice round $40)

8 Day Crete Itinerary (April/May)Itinerary

Planning a solo trip to Crete in a few weeks (April 28 - May 4), which flight into Athens and connecting back from Chania > Frankfurt > NYC. I’m trying to confirm how to divide my days between Heraklion, Chania (primary base), day trips/quick overnights, and potentially Athens for first night. I’ve been to Greece twice before so seen major sights of Athens and done Hydra and a few nearby islands. Excited for food, wine, history, and beaches. Cautious that I am solo traveling, so things like renting a car or overly romantic stops may not make sense for me. Would love to find a night or two of social fun, but have heard Crete can be somewhat tame for nightlife (especially given I am before season really gets going in June).

Primary questions: - I land at 4pm in Athens on first day. I can either go to Athens for the night, have a drink at rooftop bar, and dinner (even if I’ve been before, never get tired of seeing the acropolis lit up at night). OR I can go straight to Piraeus and overnight ferry to Heraklion (which gives me an extra half day in Heraklion). Thoughts? - Is Knossos worth it? Lots of conflicting opinions on whether it is “Disney” or history. I’ve heard the Heraklion Archeology Museum is great so definitely planning for that. - I am planning to do Samaria Gorge hike and was going to leave my luggage in Chania, take ferry to Loutro after hike, and spend a night there before going back to Chania. Anyone done this? Is this a good idea? Loutro seems very relaxed, hoping it will have stuff open for first days of May. - Is a half day sail to Dia Island near Heraklion worth it/better than putting that time toward beaches near Chania or further south? - Any suggestions on best ways to sample Cretan wine, other than just ordering it? I’m definitely not educated on it and love a vineyard visit when it makes sense.

General plan for itinerary: Day 1: Land in Athens, either rooftop drink + taverna dinner or dinner in Piraeus + overnight ferry to Heraklion Day 2: fly to Heraklion (if no ferry), archeology museum, sight see Heraklion, dinner in Heraklion Day 3: Knossos, bus to Chania, dinner in Chania Day 4: Day trip to a beach (seitan limania or balos/granvosa) Day 5: Day trip to beach (whichever I didn’t do Day 4) Day 6: Samaria Gorge hike, ferry to Loutro, night in Loutro Day 7: Loutro, ferry/bus back to Chania in afternoon Day 8: AM in Chania, fly out at 7pm

Hyatt has better quality locations around the world, but Marriotts are EVERYWHERE (especially post merger with Starwood). I used to travel for work every week and stayed loyal to Marriott/SPG, it’s a great program and the points come in handy on vacations anywhere in the world.

I’m a big believer in a little diversity of spend along a trip (especially if you are willing/like to move around a bit). I try to do 1 night in a nice hotel (I am Marriott lifetime platinum from business travel and sometimes getting that status treatment is just sooooo nice on the ego) and then 2 nights at a cheaper place (boutique if I want quiet, hostel if I’m feeling social). At the end, I get to do a bit of different experiences and the blended cost makes me not feel as guilty while traveling solo.

Any updates? How did the trip go?

Thanks for having the courage to post. I just had a similar experience (35 years old, separation after 12 years together/4 years married because she woke up one day and decided it wasn’t what she needed anymore and she wasn’t who she was in her 20s). I am still in the middle of the process, but the things that have helped me most:

1) this Reddit community (hearing so many men have the same experience that I did and found happiness on the other side). The narrative is always about men leaving women or being cheaters, but there are A LOT of us that have a female partner who bails on the relationship.

2) “No Breakup Can Break You” by Nick Dawson. It was originally a Reddit thread and then an essay and then be turned it into a book. Super short, like 90 pages but such a good, honest way to understand and digest this sort of thing as a guy.

3) don’t go around it, go through it. Dont drink/smoke weed alone (but I still drink socially, helps to feel normal when out with friends).

4) lean on your people. Telling people was the hardest, it felt like I was going on a PR tour promoting some shitty hallmark movie at every morning news show with the same script. But it’s so helpful that I have friends checking in on me and leaning in to support me.

5) the gym thing is real. Some days, when I feel the most deflated and hit that point where I’m just staring at the wall, I get up and go for a run. It’s amazing what that does for energy levels and starting to feel like yourself again.

Will do a full trip report soon. We stayed at Watei Kazekomichi (heavily recommended on this sub) and was definitely worth it. Truly amazing and so relaxing. Was our first time doing both onsen and ryokan and was such a nice way to do both. The food was amazing.

Upcoming Trip Advice: Ishigaki, Osaka/Kyoto, Atami Onsen, TokyoItinerary

I’ve been following this sub for a few months to help plan for upcoming trip with my wife (both mid 30s, traveling from NYC). We like to move a lot when we travel, so I know many will say we are trying for too many places in only 12 days, but it’s a pace that’s worked for us before. That said, bigger cities like Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo feel like they have endless options, so seeking any big suggestions or feedback on my plans… also any food recommendations for these cities that would fit our open dinners/lunches. In addition, we may be there in peak season so trying to manage around the chaos of tourist surge we may see in places like Kyoto.

I’m including plans for first day in Taipei (direct flights on EVA, which is supposed to have unreal business class that we booked on credit card points), but will go light on that itinerary.

Some of my biggest questions: - I have 2 nights in Osaka and 1 night in Kyoto, mostly because food in Osaka is supposed to be great and hotels and are much cheaper. It’ll be peak season in Kyoto. Should we do 1.5 days in Kyoto + 1.5 in Osaka? Or 2.5 in Kyoto (one as a day trip from Osaka)? Might mean replacing Arashyama with Osaka sights.

  • Does anyone have experience with Ishigaki/Taketomi/Iriomote? Does my plan make sense? Should I try for both Taketomi and Iriomote in one day? Os Iriomote better than Taketomi?

  • Any ideas for best ways to go out and see some fun bars in Osaka and Tokyo? Want to try sake, whiskey, and local beers.

  • Any experience in Atami for Onsen? It’s pricey and I’m hoping worth it.

  • For Tokyo fish market, any suggestions on tsukiji vs. toyosu?
