Can we add this to the automod please?
I'd be more inclined to copy the Welsh considering their massive success in reviving their language, the majority of schools should be gaelscoilleanna but that takes actual time and investment which the government (and a large amount of the population I'd wager) aren't arsed with.
Well I meant more in the context of London is also a team so it's either UK or England + NI.
That's not how it works here, you only support your home team and every county has one. You don't pick, having a stadium 2x the population would make no sense if the population is the supporter base.
There are 34 county teams. The counties teams represent can be 30,000 people so there's matches where every possible support could come and there would still be empty seats.
Limerick, the current best team is 200k population so that's 20% of the entire county's population attending this weekend's match if there's an even split of tickets sold.
Teams from 3 countries (4 depending on how you classify Northern Ireland) play in the All Ireland Gaelic Football Championship, but it's still the "All Ireland" despite the fact they're the "best team in the world" because it's not an open competition.
"World Champions" is the winner of a world cup where all countries have a chance of qualifying and winning.
Saturday's game won't sell out so I wouldn't count on others selling tickets, I'd try Ticketmaster again when you're in Ireland just to be safe. Select SuperValu/Centra shops will sell them too (see https://www.gaa.ie/tickets/where-to-buy). Fans of both teams will mix together freely so don't be worried about sitting in certain spots!
As for rules see: https://youtu.be/biFcgUB98ns?si=-0AONnmRCavlIsR2 It gets most things right apart from the pronunciation of "Sliotar", should be (shli-ter) and the rules around penalties are slightly different now. Don't be afraid to ask questions at the match tho. People should be more than happy to answer. Should be a good game, enjoy!
Not sure why "the stadiums are bigger" makes the spectacle any better. In Ireland we fill our 83,000 seater stadium for our amateur sports people in Gaelic football and hurling. Not bad for a country of 5 million!
I watched the superbowl for the first time this year and while the more tactical nature of the sport is interesting, spending 3½ hours watching one 30 second play to them be bombarded with ads for 5 mins, completely takes you out of the experience. What are all the people in the stands doing? Just sitting around? I'd take the All Ireland Hurling final over that or soccer any day.
Basketball is a different beast tho, way more engaging.
Speaks to the individualistic nature of the US in general really. You can see that in comedy shows too where the characters in US shows always seem to come out on top despite their shortcomings whereas characters on the other side of the Atlantic seem to always fail, they're the punchline. It's a cultural thing, the "American dream" and all that.
I've always loved the quote about the UK comedy protagonist "Smart enough to understand how shit their situation is but not smart enough to get out of it".
"Association Football" is the name of the sport, it's not anything to do with being a member of an association.
What do you mean by the remnants of Old English? Gaelic is a family of languages which bears no relation to English, apart from a very small number of words like "clan".
I'd normally avoid saying football entirely, just "Gaelic" and "Soccer" avoids the most confusion. I don't think the fact soccer is an English invention is really on many people's minds, rugby/cricket have more of that kind of connotation as they were the "upper class" sports.
Australians and Irish people use "Soccer" too to avoid confusion with Aussie Rules and Gaelic football respectively. Basically anywhere people play multiple types of football, soccer is used to prevent confusion.
Also Aussie rules take inspiration from Gaelic football too, it's not all rugby influence!
I'm convinced big oil companies et al have switched from the "Carbon footprint/it's not real" mantra to "We're doomed" because it's so much more effective. It turns people who would actually do something into people who won't, the loonies who think it isn't real were never going to do anything anyway.
China is the world's largest investors in green energy. We all have so much change to make so it should be "easy" for everyone surely?
No, it's airplane leasing. 50% of the world's aircraft are leased from here.
The word "Boycott" comes from the use of the practice by the Land League against Capitan Charles Boycott, land holder for an absentee landlord in Mayo.
I used to work as a betting operator for Tote at different racecourses around the country. No qualifications needed and it's casual employment so you can work as much or as little as you want and can fit it around other jobs too. It's fairly laid back, you get to travel around the country, pay is pretty good (travel expenses & overnights too depending on how far you travel) and it's fairly enjoyable especially if you're into horses. You'll need a car or someone willing to drive you around the country tho. I think I applied on Indeed.
Bookies can be kinda shady but 99% of our bets were auld ones putting on €1/2 bets so I didn't feel too bad.
I love swimming but if I had to pick my favourite stroke it's definitely Thatcher's.
The Irish population decreased every year from 1845 until the 1970s, and it started decreasing again in the 80s. It was only the mid 90s where immigrants outnumbered emigrants in Ireland so it's not that long ago. Also as the other commentator has pointed out, many went to the UK as well.
The Digital Markets Acts, among other things, forces big tech to allow competitors software on their devices. In this case, Apple must allow competitors to the App Store on iOS. This is a good thing because the App Store is extremely scummy to developers by being restrictive and taking a huge % of all money made through it. Right now, for example, you can't buy a Netflix subscription through iOS because Apple would take a cut for no reason other than the app was downloaded from the App Store.
