You can actually fairly easily make a small parabolic dish and mount a standard mic in it. It might not fit on a hot shoe directly, but it could fit on a magic arm or similar. Google "diy parabolic mic birding".
Don't worry about "leading lines". You have a good eye for composition and posing and expressions, so just get your subject in the frame and watch out for awkward stuff in the background that's distracting.
