Thanks so much. To be fair, I do tend to warm into things.
Thanks! The song really appeared when I was jamming and hit that G to C to Em and the melody appeared. Capo on the 2nd fret.
Forget about the song. Then go away and learn guitar. Then start writing songs again. They'll probably be better.
Amazing! Can you share a link to the song that's on Spotify? And the new one tomorrow!
Be ready with your net when one flies past.
Thanks mate. No I have never really been in a band, just messed around at this kind of stuff for many years. Started taking it more seriously a couple of years back.
Ha your stuff is awesome. I love a bit of humour! And your DIY label has the best name (as someone from not far from Brum!) Thanks for the those tips - will def try them. Been using submithub so far with sporadic success. The trouble with genre is acoustic is often chucked in with folk, when it might not be folk at all. Definitions definitions. Also a lot of my songs have non-acoustic stuff in them and curators don't like that! I'll crack on. Good luck with the Not Nows!
Good advice, thanks. TBH I have been doing that for a while, trying to find these communities. I need to get more organised with it.
Does it not reduce your organic visibility on IG to do that? Also what do you think about FB ads?
I can at least do some of that for sure. Thanks.
I heard that IG reduced your organic visibility when you do that? I.e. to encourage yu to run more ads. However I have tried running ads on FB and I have trouble linking to a Spotify song. I ake the post and go to boost it, and it throws some kind of error until I scrap the song link.
I might just do that until I have a compelling reason to do otherwise. I mean, no one has said to me "PLEASE do an album or EP!"
Thanks. I like that idea.
Sounds good! Open mics are mostly supportive anyways and people just like to see people with the balls to go up there. But yeah this is good!
I like your thoughts in this one! Nice wordplays and imagery. I like the wry delivery, kind of reminds me of Cake. I know it's a demo but keep your ears on that guitat timing - nail it pretty close to the drum beat! Great work!
Writing only when you are moved to is one approach. And I guess you can be sure that you have inspiration behind you that way and you are more likely to deliver something of value. But if you also write without inspiration you are developing your craft. E.g. you write a song one day and it is the product of inspiration. Great! Then you write 9 songs that are kind of nothing, but still complete songs. Then inspiration comes again, and you are better equipped to write this new song because of what you learned across those 9 mediocre songs. And it's not just the songwriting knowledge you get, it's also a fluency in flexing that creative muscle. Make sense? Also some of those mediocre songs might not be that - for a lot of artists their nothing songs are the fan favourites.
You can turn yourself into whatever you want, but you have to do the work. Learn an instrument (guitar). Keep writing those cringey lyrics until they seem less cringey or you just accept them. Work on the voice. You won't sound like Frank, write like Bob or play like George, but you will be a lot closer to the image of yourself in your head. And you will have paid your dues.
Good for you! I'm in the UK and haven't had a chance yet. He was coming over earlier in the year but he had that crisis and cancelled everything. Seems to be back strong now though.
I had a "perfectionism problem" for years and years. It's a euphemism for not doing the work. The work is following through on ideas even if you know it's not going to top the charts. Breaking down songs you hear, and doing that on a regular basis. Don't just jot down that line or riff or title idea - work it in the moment. Strike while it's hot! And learn about music. You don't mention your instrument. Do you have one? Are you even musical? I'm not getting at you, I'm just saying it helps to be a musician if you want to write music. Another thing - read. Read books. Read road signs. Read anything that isn't rendered in pixels. Like this.
How to get ideas?
