I think kids have always said racist and sexist and vile things. I remember some kids saying the n word, making fun of Chinese eyes, calling each other the r word, making fun of sped students (the short bus, etc.), homophobia was rampant, etc.

Actually theres a difference. Tanning is a sign of wealth. It shows u have enough money to travel. This wasn't always the case as in the past it was considered that if you were pale you were beautiful bc it showed you have enough wealth to not work outside.

I'd say this. From colonial contact till now we have tried to be white ppl. We think we haven't but we have. So colourism is one thing but the biggest reason it happens is bc unlike anywhere else on Earth, Black people in Africa don't teach their children about blackness.

The Black Pride movement for example didn't come from Africa it came from the USA.

Bc we don't see our Blackness as an important thing let alone important enough to teach, we grow up thinking it means nothing compared to how diaspora groups grow up and quickly have to learn the nuances of being black.

But I would say education and socialisation are still a massive factor as to why this still happens.
