I agree with you that when it comes to flavour, sometimes it is hard to tell. But we cure the gourd as well to help prevent cracking and molding (for wooden gourds this is something quiet common).

I found Giorgio di Maria's The Twenty Days of Turin delightfully weird and creepy.

People don't seem to realize how important "sound" is in FF, perhaps because the recreation of "natural sound atmospheres" is really hard. In my opinion the Japanese do this very well though.
