It is important to distinguish between total number of incidents and the crime rate per capita though. In some areas the total number of incidents actually matters and you can't just dismiss it by telling people to refer to the rate per capita instead.
This is a key part, all very well to say that youth crime is down and crime is falling every year where in some areas people are experiencing crime and observing it more in their areas so telling them that their experiences mean nothing and they should shut up and they are wrong isn't really going to make them believe you.
Of course since this is Victoria, we have seen surges of youth crime with levels back to where there were 8 years ago
Youth crime has been increasing over the past couple years, the number of property offences by youth in Victoria in 2023 is as high as they were 8 years ago
spurred on by Labor backbenchers who heard the date floating around and gleefully shared it with Coalition types they came across at the airport heading back to their various electorates.
