Lots of precedent for dodgy tactics like that with actual wars. Henry VII, after the battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, backdated his reign to just before the battle so he could punish those on the losing side as traitors.

Isn’t that the entire plot of The Beast Below? That always reminded me of Le Guin’s story much more strongly.

I’ve actually emailed with this journalist before for work. He’s a very prolific writer. He was one of the journalists who covered the Balenciaga Pope AI-generated image story most extensively.

To what extent was the success of the Mongol army under Genghis (/Chinggis) Khan a direct product of his leadership, versus a confluence of historical and environmental factors?

I’ve done a little bit of reading in this area, but I was always curious how much credit Chinggis Khan as a figure is given by the academic community.

I know that the (sparse) historical sources paint him as a driving force behind the growth of the Mongolian empire, but I’m sure the posthumous lionisation makes it difficult to clearly assess.

I was curious to learn what other factors were at play, and how much his own policies (decimalisation, unification of the nomadic tribes, recruiting experts from conquered nations) can be pointed to as evidence

I get the Elizabeth train because it’s cheaper. Not by much but it definitely is. I’d get the GWR under any other circumstances

What incorrect usage doth through yonder window break

In all fairness I rarely go beyond Hope Tap so I’ve got no clue

Which ones the nice one? Monk’s retreat?

That’s what I said. They’re TfL, until they become Elizabeth later this month. Same thing, different name.

From TFL.gov.uk:

“Services currently running as TfL Rail will become part of the new Elizabeth line schedule when it launches.”

Same thing - just named something different because it’s only going from Reading to Paddington right now.

Mate, are you joking, the Elizabeth line is already running to Reading. Has been for weeks, months

A lot of people don’t hate Lewis. They’re not mad at him. They just don’t want to see him keep winning because the novelty’s worn off.

Any sport’s main purpose is to be entertaining, exciting. It was hard for F1 to be either of those things while Mercedes and Hamilton were nailed-on winners from lights-out almost every single race (and pretty much every season).

Yeah only left him out because he was in the starring role - definitely one of the bigger actors to come out of that show

Did you just say Sherlock is American made?

Regardless, my point is that all of those actors are huge in Britain, and still fairly large in the states due to them being - as you said - mostly American franchises.

And given the preponderance of British actors in roles that could be played by Americans, clearly we know more about acting than you might think.

There is a world of difference between huge star and not doing much. Also I’d disagree on Fassbender at least.

Most of those actors have had major parts in huge movies/shows (X-men, Mission Impossible, Star Trek, Sherlock)

If you don’t think that, you’re probably American

Hardy, Fassbender, Macavoy, Stephen Graham, Simon Pegg, Andrew Scott, Dominic Cooper? The list goes on
