Skip Berkeley and Albany and look in El Cerrito. It’s more affordable, very walkable and right next door. Berkeley is great but it’s got a few too many issues for my taste these days (and I lived there for many years). I grew up in Albany and it’s a really nice town but it’s lost a lot of its charm and has gotten much more snobby over the years.

Yeah I don't mind making comparisons for the sake of discussion but I also I don't much see the point in ranking one over the other for the same reasons you lay out, especially since it really comes down to personal preference.

Tough one. I think the vibe Isaac Hayes laid down was a darker and more melancholic version of what Barry White was doing with the orchestras. As for Curtis, while he definitely had some amazing funk songs his sound tended to be more uplifting and upbeat, and of course he had that signature brighter tone to his voice on the opposite end of the spectrum from Isaac Hayes. Let's just say while I think Curtis has some more singles that stand out, I come back to Isaac more often for that darker sound and the extended jams.

All that being said, speaking of melancholy Billy Jack by Curtis hits about as deep as anything he ever did and is one of my all time favorites.

Skate or Die

Super Dodge Ball

Bionic Commando

Double Dragon 2

Not sure tbh but probably a random FB ad like 10 years ago and the music geek in me couldn’t resist. They’re still out there.

Moon Beach and the bridge stage from Streets of Rage. I also have the soundtracks for 1 and 2 on vinyl. Pure vibes and very much reflective of the house/dance music of the era.

It was the bread for me. $7 to $8 for a damn loaf of multi grain bread at Safeway, almost half that price for comparable store brand bread at Sprouts.

Almost 35 years of going to A’s games including some very heated playoff games and I never once felt unsafe. I don’t have any reason to believe that’s going to suddenly change. If anything there are going to be some very sad diehard fans, I don’t foresee anger but rather defeat being the prevailing emotion at the last game.

I’m one of the angry ones but I’m just not going to games anymore cause fuck the owners and they’re not getting another cent from me.

Bro before he packed on all the muscle is almost unrecognizable but that stance is unmistakable.

To this day that ominous robotic beeping melody from the Secret Area gives me the creeps.

Upvoted if not purely for the amount of time and thought you put into this post. Way to paint a picture. As a child of the 80s you put me right back there.

Strider. The Genesis version is still one of my all time favorites.

I first went there when I was around seven or eight and it was amazing. A few months ago I was able to take my nine-year-old daughter for the first time and was pleasantly surprised to see that the place has hardly changed. I hope it never goes away.

Golden Tee in Castro Valley. Scandia in Fairlfield is a close second but depending on where you are that might be too far (I live in West CC County and it’s only a 20 min drive for me).

She said she usually waits until later in the day in case you cancel indicating a possible pattern. I’m sorry that your aunt passed but curious how that is relevant to you passing on your parental duties? Objectively (and I’m not saying this is the case) it sounds like you’re looking for an excuse to get out of it cause you’re just not feeling it. If you’re getting sick that’s one thing but I’m getting a lot of projection here as far as guilt tripping goes.

My daughter was 3. In my opinion if you’re going to do it this is the time. As she gets older it’s only going to be harder for her. My daughter is now 9 and barely remembers what it was like when we all lived together. Are there still challenges? Absolutely. But I really do think that her age may actually be an advantage as hard as that might be to believe. She will be ok, as long as you continue to make time for her and create a safe space for her when she is with you. In fact you may even find that you’re able to enjoy parenting more than before because you will be able to do it on your own terms.

I know it hurts and you want the best for her, believe me I absolutely get it. And there is no perfect solution. But we have to look out for our mental and emotional health, and in turn I really believe it will make us better parents. Best of luck.

Mario Golf is awesome! I had almost forgotten I had this game (N64 is in storage). Gonna have to bust this out one of these days.

Definitely Super Mario Bros 2. There was so much hype around it and it was the featured game in the first issue of Nintendo Power. Got it for Christmas the year it came out.

Yup. Those first 2 years were nuts. And tbh I wish I had slowed down. I was not being completely honest with them (or myself) about being ready for a new relationship which is what most of them were looking for. And while hooking up with a lot of women was good for my confidence in the short term, here I am years later in a LTR again and I’m still sorting through some of the same unresolved internal issues and communication hang ups that led to my first divorce.

Charlie Wilson’s influence as a singer cannot be overstated. Also, Early in the Morning (the extended version) is one of the best songs ever recorded IMO.

Bootsy’s Rubber Band is often overlooked and truth be told their albums could really use remastering because the mixes are really outdated and don’t showcase the band’s brilliance which shines through in their live performances, especially from ‘78.

Here’s a link to Live in Louisville which you can only really find on CD via special order, one of my favorites. Bootsy’s space bass tone is insane. And since you seem to dig that heavy guitar sound check out Catfish Collins’ playing, it is phenomenal (especially the solo at 26:25).

This band is made up of a lot of former members of the James Brown band (including Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley) after they hooked up with George Clinton went full Pfunk.
