living like the medieval ages
Nah, look at the big open living rooms space. The 6 million will be your heating and cooling bill.
It doesn’t get all that cold or hot there. The Pacific Ocean really moderates the temperatures on the coast.
Source: have lived in various places in the Bay Area, including right on the coast. Almost always 66-68 degrees during the day.
Wait, seriously? That sounds awesome. I hate summer humidity on the East coast.
People on the coast in CA don't even need air-conditioning.
They just need a few million dollars. But I’m sure you’d recoup that in money saved on AC in just a few thousand years.
I used to live in Sonoma County. When I first moved to San Rafael in 1994 I rented a 1 bedroom duplex with a gorgeous view for $750/mo. My sister rented a two bedroom apartment just across the bridge in San Francisco for $950/mo. Moved to be closer to my aging parents back in 2010. Recently looked at moving back and realized I’d need to net at least $150K a year to be able to barely afford my old house. Sigh.
Hate summer heat and humidity on the third coast… totally blows!
Yep, especially in the northern part of the state near where I live in san francisco most of the coastal communities almoot never get hot, and usually hover between 50 and 70 degrees almost all year round.
Damn that sounds dreamy to me. And explains why Cali is so popular.
Palos Verdes is always perfect weather. Even on hotter summer days, just air the house out in the morning and it will keep cool till the afternoon when the ocean breezes come back. It never gets much colder than 50f and typically stays under 80f.
This place has great views, and great bones. Sure it needs a update, but it should be a very good return on investment. This place if updated could easily break 10 mil. Large corner lot at the end of a cul-de-sac!
OP doesn't know where nice neighborhoods are and jaw drops at price... This is one of the most desirable areas in all of Southern California.
Yeah I'm shocked that all these people that are interested in houses and Zillow don't have any vision for this. The shape and structure of this place is amazing. But it's got bland wood surface on vanities?? It's a huge lot, in an expensive-ass neighborhood, in an super desirable city, with a pool overlooking the ocean. You'd have to put very little work into this place to make it bright.
ah, that explains it. Sounds dreamy to not have humidity or above 80s.
I love the difference from all the other mansions in the area. Yeah, your place might be bigger but my place is solid as fuck. lol
Might want to get a structural engineer in on this one to make sure the bricks have steel reinforcement behind them. Lot of code changes since 1955, and the area is very earthquake prone.
Palos Verde has a fault line disconnecting the hills from the rest of flatter LA. Its the bottom of the hill in zillow pic 1. https://i.imgur.com/veoJlym.png
Yeeep, that's where they getcha.
California. 1.5 acres. Ocean View. House is irrelevant.
Not to mention “Palos Verde”
The pictures that show the house and the neighbors houses tells you exactly how valuable people think it is.
Exactly, a tear down on that land doesn't change the value. You're buying the land.
The house could be so cool though it just needs some updating
Ffs the first picture is just of the views.
I am a native and lifelong Californian, and there is no way in hell that I am sleeping with my head right under a brick balcony if we're anywhere near a major fault line, which the majority of us on the coast absolutely are.
One of the things I learned living in California - don't hang things over your bed. Luckily, didn't learn by experience
After a night drinking at the beach on Guam, I stumbled home and passed out. Early the next morning, an earthquake shook a carved wooden plaque off the window drapery rod above the bed. It hit me square in the forehead (left a goofy looking bump); however, it was perfect - I was awoken with enough time to get to the airport! Not doing bricks though…
"Mother-in-Law suite."
Oh my God, it's a 50s cartoon come to life
And the same from this Texan who lives in Tornado Alley.
I’m sorry. Looks like at least you have electricity now.
i’m from kansas and wouldn’t do that lmao
How? It’s in palos verdes my friend..
Yeah, that's mostly land value we're looking at.
1.5 acre lot. I doubt they expect anyone to keep the house, even
Nope. They’re paying $6.6 million for a huge lot with a fantastic view. The house is irrelevant.
And that lot is huge compared to the neighbors. It'll probably be demo'd
Never knew I didn’t want a large spiral staircase taking up most of the livable space in my bedroom, but now I don’t want it even more
I never considered a brick staircase, spiral or otherwise, indoors. Looks like a pain to clean. All that texture to trap dirt.
I would not use that space as a bedroom.
It'd be a pretty sweet office.
Not that they need it. This house already has more desks than I've ever seen in a residence.
lol it’s Palos Verdes. 100% more expensive to live there than the national average.
Location, location, location and lot size
Because with 300k of TLC it's a 7M house. Look at the neighborhood.
Yes, look at the neighborhood. Value is in the land. Nobody’s gonna live in that disaster.
This is your answer:
90% of the time it's the land
This is the ranchiest of CA ranch style houses I’ve ever seen
It could use a shrubbery.
Two shrubberies. With one slightly higher so you get a two-level effect with a little path running down the middle.
A path! A path!
Ni!
That plot of land would be even more expensive if the house was not standing on it is my guess.
It’s 1.5 acres, could build 4 houses on that lot
And you can bet that anyone spending that much money on that house is going to do exactly that.
New builds on the coast have to go through a lot of over sight. The Coastal Commission is hard core about what is allowed, they may only be able to build in the same footprint.
God if I had my way half the California coast would be high rises. These ridiculous rules are why the state is so expensive!
It’s also why it’s so beautiful though, so no high rises please.
It’s why you have a housing crisis and hundreds of people move every day to Texas. It’s also reserving ocean views and the best weather for then rich when they could belong to many more types of people.
And having lived abroad, I don’t find high rises ugly? It’s just the American brain that has been trained since birth to hate anything except single family homes you need a bunch of (actually ugly) car infrastructure to live in. It’s also more environmentally friendly than what is there now because anyone who can’t live in a multifamily unit somewhere they want clear land for a single family home and increase sprawl elsewhere.
or like 100 apartments
Ugh, I hate to admit this to all of you…. But I kinda love it!!! I would make some changes yes, but I love the uniqueness! If only I had 6 million lying around. For me, this is not a tear down.
Yeah, I also love it. I definitely would be making some interior decoration changes, like the tower bedroom is not how I would use that room, but the house is amazing.
I love this house! Especially the mid-century kitchen, archways, and sweet bar area. The turret, however, is a no-go.
Every single carpet in that place has to be pulled out. They look to have been purchased at the discount counter of Dave and Fran's Really Depressing Rug Emporium.
Ok that’s funny lol
I kinda love that.
Location, Location, Location
Dang I just commented this 5 hours late and I'm too lazy to go delete it lol
I think it’s quirky and charming! The kind of place I would want to put an offer on immediately and my husband would say, heck no, if we had the money. Mean me would want to buy just to keep a rich AH from tearing it down to build a mansion.
Needs a dungeon. That room with the staircase just won't do.
There is no way that house isn’t destined for a wrecking ball. The price is all about the location and view.
That vintage stove is amazing though!
It’s got a turret!
This is giving me “Skyrim” vibes.
Nooooo lollygagging
The dark and musty vibe makes me feel depressed, but it does have an ocean view

Is this a fancy ant hill?
The bedroom looks like the bottom of the well in Myst.
Location, location, location.
People on this sub have a very hard time grasping how much location can effect home prices.
If the house doesn’t look the price, it’s the value of the land. How are there still posters who don’t get this basic concept?
Location, location, location and those carpets! Those carpets are vintage to go along with the kitchen appliances!!!
Location, location, location. Did you notice the homes around how luxurious they are compared to the listing? Amazing views, I'm inclined to think it would be a teardown for something larger and more modern.
Definitely. “Tear down the mansion, build a new mansion”, is the mentality of the wealthy in the Bay Area.
California hilltop real estate mixed with a bay view. That's how.
The house isn't worth that much. The land is.
Location, location, location.
Looking at it's location and size it's very easy to see the price. Especially given it's location which is where a lot of actors and very rich people are located.
It also has a Stargate!!!
Never mind that large parts of Palos Verdes are not the most stable ground to live on, but if you do not slide into the sea, the ingenious solution to get power to the overhead lamp in pic 37 is certainly going to get you one of these days. Breathtaking, for want of a better word. :-)
It's Cali. 6 jillion dollars!!!
OMG. I got such a kick out of that house. I would not sleep in the tower. That looks awkward, but it’d be a great place to keep books and a Lair of some sort. There are plenty of other rooms to use as a master bedroom.
The price is mostly the land and the view. The house, while dated, looks like fun and just needs the carpets and light fixtures replaced.
BTW - what is that extra appliance on the wall? I could not make heads or tails of it.
It must be the location
Who would sleep in a bed underneath a brick balcony?
Location location location.
Honestly I love it. I want that weird stone bedroom!!!
Location location location !!!
Because the system is broken
They apparently declared it perfect by 1965 and did nothing further to it ever based on the decor.
Where you getting that 2.7M number from? Zillow estimates the property at 6.4M
Looks like Zillow estimated it at 4mil until they listed it at 6.6, th en Zestimate went to 6.4.
Well, that’s just hideous. For 6.6 mil I expect a lot. Like a kitchen renovated in the last 75 years.
Never understood why people need so much space
I'd need a map of the place if I lived there.
Posts from people who don't understand market value are the laziest posts.
"Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA"
Yikes! When you look at the drone views of the neighborhood this house looks like a tear down! The location is lovely but the house - especially - the interior is awful.
Should be able to keep your cattle and horses in there.
Well it’s def not until someone pays that much… the market will have the final word.
The carpeting is atrocious
It is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
$5 a brick hand laid by ghandi
Someone had a friend who knows a guy who has some skill with bricks
value is derived from what someone is willing to pay
Location, location.
It is a combination of almost every style of house, lol.
The house is beautiful, but maybe just a craftsmanship thing
Perfect spot for a cauldron
Honestly thought this was someone's Skyrim or Oblivion house. Tbh.
Brick is a pretty solid building material.
Location, location, location
Earth quake concerns aside, it’s a pretty awesome time capsule of a custom house. I love midcentury, but I don’t care for some of the medieval features: the brick bedroom, the black hardware. Just look on a map and you see why it’s $6.6mil. Needs full de-carpeting and appropriate MCM flooring!
Love the house, hate the location.
Brick. It’s $6m worth of stone.
Pics are clearly of a Bass Pro Shop.
Source: I live in Memphis, home of the world’s largest Bass Pro Shop, which occupies the entirety of a stainless steel 1:1 scale model of the Great Pyramid of Khufu. I know Bass Pro Shops.
ETA: a dropped word
I'm so confused
Memphis makes a big deal about its connection to ancient Egypt.
It's worth whatever people will pay.
Yep the view and location
I like bricks.
Another house with a bathroom that has a stall door for the toilet. Whyyyyy
The land it's sitting on ?
I guess you gotta pay extra for hideous carpet.
That house is so ugly
Location?
That house makes me uncomfortable.
Location location location
Location?
Location?
It's ugly.
This is a 3.5k (rounding) square foot ocean view property in California.
Sounds right.
that bed under a brick loft. wth.
damn, all that brick and wood, probably going to waste in a landfill. ; (
Remember that really bad car accident that Tiger Woods was in a few years ago? That happened just a few miles away from this house.
If no one buys it, then it‘s not…..
Must be the location….
I actually understand the pricing. Palos Verde is a very exclusive location. It’s over 3500sf, which is huge. Add ocean view and voilà, over 6 million.
That’s almost reasonable for where it is.
It’s in California, it’s 3600 sq ft. Are you daft.
Exactly. Add to that, it is also sitting on 1.5 acres and has a view. The house beside it sold for 11 million. It is dated but there are no stronger or well built house than mid century homes. The wood ceilings and beems in that house alone would cost a fortune.
Sorry. I do not want to pay 6.5 million to look out over the good people of southern Los Angeles. Unless they do my bidding and they are dependent upon me for protection from the Huns and Visigoths.
There’s a Quad Damage hidden somewhere in there…
I literally thought the bedroom was a RuneScape screenshot
Do I spy a sex dungeon?
Who wouldn't want to live in the Lighthouse from Return to Zork
Every brick a dollar
No one gonna mention the blood stain on the carpet of the last photo? 🤣
This is a piece of shit
I unironically love this. But under staircase needs to be a library and reading nook. No further discussion.
Good lord that house is fugly
Whats with all the brick? The kitchen is terrible IMO
The fact that it’s in California loses any appeal it might have had 🤷♀️
Because you get a beach view. In California
I’m trade my house and a kidney for that view.
This house looks like it was made by ai.
The pond "moat" with the bridge, private bar, arcade, in-ground pool, custom masonry, turret, and vaulted ceilings may explain the cost...
But that view.
Okay but that first pic is amazing. That beautiful staircase and that bed, it’s like a castle.
Cozy it is not.
I’m sure there’s someone, somewhere still patting themselves on the back for that hideous arch.
I’m sure there is someone patting themselves on the back when they completed that hideous arch in
Worth lol good one
what a dump lol
This house is an older home that is full of beautiful brick and solid wood doors and paneling. All true custom for this home and original owners. I can’t afford this home but it is worth more than an average house even in this same area.
That’s a dungeon
Cause some asshole with too much money will pay it
Money can't buy taste.
The house $630k. The view $6m.
