How Alice: Madness Returns Found New Life on the Internet Long After the Departure of Its Creator
NewsEA not giving the licence to make a sequel was a fucking crime.
I wish MS paid for the license and let American McGree make the final game in the trilogy.
I would love that, but is there a reason MS would do that? They definitely wouldn't out the kindness of their hearts
Why MS? Do they have any relation to this game?
Stranger things have happened than Xbox funding a new Alice game. Nintendo was the last company you'd expect to save Bayonetta, but it worked. Not saying it's likely, but anything could've happened.
Sad that ea killed the series.
I love these games and it's absolutely ridiculous EA is just letting the IP die. They should sell it and let some dev who actually cares about the IP work on it. I hate EA so much for this, even more so as a lot of work was put into Asylum (a possible third game).
It would be pretty easy for someone else to pick it up and continue the work, just couldn't do it under the America Mcgee name, but since Alice in Wonderland is in the public domain they can make it a spiritual successor without stepping on the AG IP.
EA is similarly responsible for the drought of Star Wars games for what felt like years due to an exclusive deal they made with Disney. The fuckers closed down so many great developers, too. Activision is another example and how they wasted away the Spongebob game license. So glad THQ has it again.
I liked the first Alice but Madness Returns really is a fantastic cult game imo. The fact that people are still picking it up and playing it today is a real treat, it’s a very unique and stylistically fun title to me.
can you just buy it on the store or do you need a physical copy for it?
You can just buy it on the store or download it via game pass. I did the latter and got the original game bundled with it as DLC.
didn't even know it's on GP, that's great, will do thank you!
EA took Alice: Asylum from us. I'll never forgive them for that.
Nobody in the industry is giving American McGee money to make another game, EA made the right decision
I've wanted to play Madness Returns for a long time... Maybe I'll get around to it one day, since it's BC on Series X!
I always really loved the tone and aesthetics of AM’s Alice games. But for me at least. They both failed as video games because the gameplay was so poor. Super clunky controls at a time when most other 3rd person platform adventures had far superior controlling characters. The platforming was also very clunky as was the very shallow combat.
I’ve tried restarting them several times and I just can’t get very far into them due to the lack of smooth gameplay.
It’s a shame because I would have loved for them to have been great playing games. They’re both in my XB library so I might give them a shot just to remind myself how clunky they are.
Sorry I know that’s going to be an unpopular opinion seeing as this is trying to celebrate the games. I am happy to celebrate them too on that level of beautiful art and intriguing tone.

The first game released in the year 2000 as a PC game. It plays like all platformer did at the time.
What PC games controlled better?
The second game played like a third person shooter. Something makes me believe that EA pushed for that lol. But also the cutscenes just became silly and overly dramatic with "ahh she's nuts because tough upbringing" rather than mysterious and interesting with dark thoughts.
The series died with the first game imo. I enjoyed the first to completion on Xbox, but could barely push through the few hours I spent on the second game.
I never played the first only the second but its definitely one of my favourite games of all time, it oozes of atmosphere, has very unique art and the story is pretty interesting
Not sure why you’re segregating pc out as a format. You can’t tell me pc’s couldn’t live up to consoles.
We were playing games like Mario, Banjo on N64. Tomb raider and the soul reaver games on PS.
There was no reason why a pc game in the action platformer genre couldn’t get control and level design at level to a decent level. Sorry I can’t accept that argument.

The PC market back then was extremely different to today. Controllers were NOT common and were very largely not supported in PC games back then. It wasn't until the Xbox 360, GFWL and XINPUT that that started to change.
Alice only released on PC until the 360 port.

So I repeat again, which ones on PC controlled well then?
I’m not sure what your actual point is. Are you saying because the PC didn’t have many platformera and not many people had controllers we need to overlook the fact that Alice was a clunky platformer?
I agree that the pc didn’t have many platform action arcade 3rd person games because the vast majority of people used M+KB and they weren’t conducive to those genres. But I don’t see how that should be an excuse for poor gameplay.
You can say this is what caused the devs problems and I can see that. But you still have to acknowledge it had poor gameplay.
Also. I feel like you’re trying to defend the game. You don’t need to. It is what it is. I’ve acknowledged it did some brilliant things but that’s tone and art etc. I’m just criticising the gameplay.
He died?! Didn't he just released mods to update the game?
I think American McGee is not active as a game dev for a long time is what the title implies
No he is alive and fine. I follow him on Twitter, he sells these toy stuffed rabbits that are designed after different mental health issues, to help raise awareness for them. He has talked about wanting to make another Alice game but EA own the IP and don't care about it.
EA will forever stand as a hallmark of everything WRONG with this industry.
Literally one of my favorite games of all time and I just played it last year.
