World Cup is coming to my city in 2026. I’m probably a bit ahead of the curve here, but I’m wondering what I should be prepared for? What’s the best way to watch a game or two? Or should I just put my place on Airbnb and leave town for a month???
Preparing for World Cup 2026, advice from past host city citizens….
❓QuestionIf you live year a city that’s hosting games try to get tickets for that or go to fanfest.
Pick a game or two you want to watch and enjoy the atmosphere. It should be an incredible experience.
准备一些啤酒和小吃,然后在电视机正式开始时留在电视机前观看直播。
I live in NJ. I'm sure I'll get to at least one of the matches at MetLife as it's a big enough stadium and there are enough dates there so it shouldn't be impossible. Wish me luck on one of those being the final!
What makes you think you can actually get the tickets??
I signed up for them, but haven't heard anything yet. I want to go to at least one match. It would be a dream!
Its funny to hear people in the comments talk about "walking around the cities" or "taking the train to a match" for the worldcup in america
The east coast host cities are walkable. NYC is going to be an incredible atmosphere. Dallas and Houston will be hell
Yeah NYC seems like an incredible place to host a world cup!
But thinking about places in like texas or california, I can't imagine what the whole event looks like. At the euros this year you would usually take a train to the city, walk around the train station in city center to the fan zones and then walk to the stadium/public viewing near city center, all usually within 30min of walking from each other.
Seems like some american cities are so big, that it would feel disconnected from each other, like just a local event and not the whole city celebrating.
I agree. I am optimistic that it will turn out better than people think in those cities due to the amount of money and resources that will be thrown at planning for this. There will certainly be large fan zones set up in every city, and likely a large number of shuttles arranged to transport people if the stadium isn’t within walking distance. But in general I think the high density cities will be a more enjoyable experience.
My biggest concern for Dallas and Houston is that Central Texas in the summer is legitimately one of the most uncomfortable climates I’ve ever experienced. It’s 35 to 40 degrees celsius every day, incredibly humid, zero cloud cover, and there’s no ocean breeze. You can’t be outside for very long during the day, especially if you’re not acclimated to the climate at all. So what are all these tourists going to do during the day?
Yeah I am optimistic too. Out of all the recent/upcoming world cups (Qatar, Russia, Iberia/Morocco, Saudi Arabia) it is the only one (besides the obvious one, iberia) I could imagine going to and it being fun! I have wanted to visit america for a while :)
no, just no
Lol, which of New York, Toronto, Boston, and Philadelphia are you under the impression you can’t walk in?
You “can walk” anywhere. The games will be played in East Rutherford, Foxborough, & South Philly. Don’t recommend walking to/from any of them.
I understand it’s fun to point out that Metlife is actually in New Jersey, but the stadium is literally 5 miles from Midtown Manhattan lol. The Link is also easy to get and has an express train from center city right to the stadium. Foxborough is definitely a pain to get to though, but the city of Boston itself will be fun during the World Cup
And the train runs from Boston to foxboro.
Boston and NYC will be a phenomenal atmosphere probably the best in the country.
Miami should have a pretty great atmosphere too with such a large Latin American population. But yeah either NYC and Boston are personally where I would want to be.
SF is walkable with decent public trans as well.
The stadium is definitely not walkable from SF.
But is easily accessible via public transit
Aren’t the games at Levi’s in Santa Clara?
Yeah you just hop on the Caltrain with a change over to the VTA light rail and it takes you right to the stadium
True, but still like an almost 2 hour commute if you are heading from downtown sf.
A 2 hours train ride is pretty light to many people used to riding trains, especially for a big match
Yeah public transit is slower than driving direct. Bring a six pack and enjoy the ride
I much prefer my method of paying way too much for parking and then waiting two hours in the lot after the niners game before I even reach 101.
It’s always getting home that’s the worst part
I’m so excited! Thinking of putting a room or two in my house on AirBnB for Philly matches
Just as a heads-up City Hall has tightened up with AirBnB in Philly. I recommend looking into getting a license if you’re serious about it—I bet you can make some serious cash though. I briefly discussed rented my house out but my wife is against the idea.
There's gonna be tens of thousands of people. Air bnbs and hotels are going to be booked. Lots of people out and about walking and probably exploring depending on where you are at and probably lot of news coverage and fan festivals
Lol it will be interesting to see how different everyone's experience in based on what city they see games in. I plan on going to games in LA, Seattle, Houston, and Dallas.
Everyone and their dog puts their unit up on ABnB - and most sit empty. Best way to watch a game is to put your name in the lottery and buy tickets if you get lucky. Or watch on TV like everyone else. The fun thing to do is find out where the teams that are playing in your area are staying and go see if there are any impromptu fan celebrations in that area in the days before the match. If you go to a match, wear a jersey and see if anyone else wants to trade before or after. Or collect the pins everyone seems to be trading/selling on the street corners. Drink with fans from another team. Make friends. Take the train to a match and sing along with the fans of whatever teams happen to be the majority in your car. Root for your team and then for the team that beats your team. Write the day/date of the match you attend on the jersey you wear, and the score. Don’t buy tickets on the corner, they will most likely be fake.
US cities have so many hotel rooms vs stadium capacity that you won't get much for your Airbnb. It's going to be like any other sporting event in the city.
agree. we are talking cities like atlanta, Dallas, LA.. many have hosted super bowls and olympics and many major sporting events and conventions over the years. World Cup is a big deal but the hotel capacity and the like is there already. That is one of the good things about the WC being in North America - the infrastructure is already there and doesn't need to be built for this (unlike say Qatar).
I haven't been to a world cup but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a lot of traffic when attending the stadiums
