Heading to Vegas Memorial Day weekend. We’ve been there a bunch of times, we are taking our adult kids along. It’s their 3rd or 4th time in Vegas. They have requested a day away from the strip. We are planning on picking up a car on Saturday at 7am and heading to Hoover Dam, with a stop in Boulder City along the way for breakfast. We have tickets for the tour already, but plan to upgrade them to the longer tour when we get there. We need to be back to dinner at Lotus of Siam by 7pm. What else can we do out towards Hoover Dam? Was looking at Valley of Fire, or heading to a Ghost Town, but am open to just about anything. Just trying to find something out that way so we are not driving all over the place. Also concerned about how busy things will be on the holiday weekend.
I love your reply- I was going to say the exact same thing 😃
Valley of Fire is a long day in itself. You'll want to check out ghost town Nelson, Nevada https://travelnevada.com/mines-prospecting/techatticup-mine/ and take Hwy 165 to the end and see Lake Mohave or check out Chloride, Arizona.
Found it funny that they mine in Chloride but they are mining something else.
What are they mining?
Silver, antimony, arsenic, copper, gold, mercury, tungsten, zinc.... And more.
Reading new stuff tells me it comes out of the ground as silver chloride (which makes silver.... AND CHLORINE, lol oops on me.
Wasn't listed on the mineral report I read so I presumed incorrectly and the name makes more sense now.
Red Rock state park is awesome.
Valley of Fire is a good choice if you have time. I recommend the White Domes loop trail. It's got an old movie set and a cool slot canyon section. You can drive North along Lake Mead to the entrance, and come back into town on the i15.
Valley of Fire
Swing on down to Laughlin
Historic Railroad Trail. It's the old rail right of way from the train used to build the dam. Trail leaves from the top of the dam parking structure. Mostly flat trail, with several tunnels and views of the lake. Out and back, you can hike as far as you want.
West rim is impressive and a nice easy ride.
Stop at Hemenway Park near Boulder and on the way to Hoover Dam. You can see the Bighorn Sheep. Check out the ram cam. https://www.bcnv.org/1026/Ram-Cam
