Looking into minimal van builds and one guy commented how his foot pump was kinda tiresome for doing dishes. I’m making a removable sink area and need something not attached to the van like an electric pump. But should I just go with a jug with a pour spout? Is it worth it to get a foot pump? Do you love it? Do you hate it? Please rant in the comments specifically pertaining to doing dishes. Thanks!
It doesn't need a seal? That's cool. How is it mounted? Literally just sitting on the countertop? The countertop has a hole down to the jerry can?
Yes, it’s just a small (less than 1/2”) hole in the counter, the tube goes from the pump on top right down to the Jerry can.
Thank you, this rules!
We found that a foot pump helped us save on water usage. Although it was unintentional, we weren’t filling up the tanks as often. We switched to electric pump and found we were going through more water.
I’ve used a Whale foot pump for 10 years in three different rigs. You’ll use/waste a lot less water overall. I can dispense a teaspoon of water at a time, useful for wetting kitty’s dry food a little.
If a foot pump wears someone out, they need more exercise.
I like the 2-sprayer bottles method best - smaller soapy water bottle and larger freshwater bottle. Dishes done with few oz of water. Sourcing, hauling, disposing of water is PITA, so I’m into efficiency.
Probably get a better foot pump? I have the whale gusher pump. In this video, the lady replaced it with that one over the cheaper version that you may see a lot in van builds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NaVzz6o_go
I have this is my setup. It pumps water out when you press the pedal and when you release it so it saves time.
I've recently switched to the Whale Galley Gusher. Extremely easy setup, good water flow. I was using a USB faucet that was slow, noisy, and floppy. I really like the foot pump. It's stronger than the small foot pumps I often see in build videos. It does not allow for hot water, but my build isn't set up for that power-wise anyway. I'm pleased.
I 2nd The Whale GG. Easy to wash dishes, no annoying pump sound and you control the flow speed and amount saving water.
Water storage on the roof with a rubber hose and a valve. Let gravity do the work.
Note that water is very heavy, so if you have a lot of it it stored up high it can raise your center of gravity and make your vehicle more prone to rollovers. It's fine to have enough for dishes or a shower, but don't be putting weeks' worth of water on your roof.
I used a garden sprayer. Pressurized water. Putting a kitchen sink vegetable sprayer on the end of the sprayer hose worked great for Me.
Hmm. Seems "one guy" wants running water for dishes, and that's not necessary to wash dishes. The water could be poured in basins, as you surmise. Do that if you want minimal, and effective. Easier than a hot water system too, since you can just use a kettle to mix in hot water. And you can do it outside on a nice day. It's probably how your ancestors did it. For generation after generation. KISS.
Rig up an air bladder operated switch to a pump and fuse with a 12 V battery. A small bilge pump for a fishing rowboat works. I bought a SeaFlo unit sufficient to pull water from a remote onboard tank and drive it with enough pressure through my tankless shower. Same thing for a sink, I’d figure.
they have USB battery rechargeable portable pumps that pump up to 30 gallons on a charge; technically it's not attached to your vans electrical system.
I used a foot pump for a few month and I hated it lol. It makes the all van swings and it was pushing a lot of water when I press in a big burst. I change for an electric pump and its way better. And I tried to shower using the foot pump, it's very hard lol
I can't imagine using my feet to pump water when a 12v water dispenser pump exists for 10 bucks I can create a simple water sink set up, it's 2024 no foot pumps anymore people...
I’ve had this pump for 4 years, about half that full-time living.
It’s designed to fit on top of a standard water cooler bottle, but I just have it sitting on a countertop, with the straw pulling from a 5G Jerry can under the counter. I need to recharge it once every 3 weeks or so.
I just drilled a proper size hole in the Jerry can lid and bought a slightly longer tube from the hardware store.
