What’s a crazy upstate NY story you got
Same but moose.
One time I had a fight a fat moose knuckle on the way to school scariest day of my life
say what
Holy shit you’re old
I've got a bear story as well. I was a kid camping in the Adirondacks around Inlet with extended family (about 15 people). My brother was just a baby at the time and in a car carrier basket.
It was late afternoon and we were all around the campfire when my mom decided to go in and get the camera to make a home video. She left my aunt in charge of my brother. We all hear rustling in the woods, if you go to the Adirondacks long enough, you can tell when it's a black bear, so we all go inside to let it sniff our trash.
Out of the woods comes a momma with two baby bears. We're watching them sniff around the trash and eventually make their way to the fire. My mom is recording the whole time. The momma bear goes over to the logs where we're we sitting because there's an unusual smell coming from the basket.
My mom, who up to this point was so excited she could capture the bears on camera, realizes this and asks where my brother is. As it turns out my aunt left him outside and the momma bear is sniffing him. She throws the camera at my father and runs outside screaming. The bears, scared beyond belief at her banshee cry, book it. My aunt was never allowed to watch him again haha.
Best part is, it's on VHS somewhere at her house.
Would have been so much cooler if the mama bear took your brother and raised him as a bear. Then he came back into society as a superhero.
As a superhero acceptable to women.
FWIW this has happened more often than you would think. There are a ton of Missing 411-esque accounts of bears stealing children but not killing them. And children being found in bear nests and such where they would have otherwise died of hypothermia. The hypothesis seems to be that female bears who are pregnant or recently pregnant still have that maternal drive and instinctually care for the child. And the way I see it, a little kid might look like a funny looking bear in bear vision…
That’s Grizzly Adams isn’t it?
Your aunt is so lucky the Bear didn’t take or kill the baby. She would be living with that regret the rest of her life. I know it was an accident and I’m glad it was all okay but if my sister or friend did something like that I would be furious at them.
I’m sorry, that’s terrifying.
I also laughed out loud.
Thanks for a cool story
When I was in middle school, growing up in Oneida, NY, we lived down the road from a bar called "Boots". One Saturday night a woman and her boyfriend got into an argument outside the bar, and he ripped all her clothes off and was threatening to beat her up. She ran away, down our road, yelling and screaming at the top of her lungs. The noise woke up my parents who called out from the front porch, and offered the woman some shelter. Nobody knew she was completely naked until she came through the front door. Mom gave her some of my clothes to put on and offered to call the police. But the woman refused, and said she had to go back to the bar because her purse was back there, and she was afraid her boyfriend would take her keys and run off with her new truck. Several days later I'm outside at our house after school, when a new truck pulled into the driveway and a very attractive woman got out. She handed me some folded up clothes that were mine, and said "I think these belong to you. Thank you very much." Then she drove off. The end.
I know Boots! My mom bartended there in the early 80s. Sometimes she'd bring me with her if she had a day shift. An old lady named Angie was always there and would make me grilled cheese sandwiches. Weird memory I haven't thought about in a LONG time!!
Boots was on Route 365 just after you left Oneida Castle, heading toward Verona. We lived kind of behind Boots, on Fox Rd., about a quarter mile off Route 365. The incident I described happened sometime in the spring/summer of 1993, I think.
There is a Byrne Dairy there now, right? I live closer to Albany now, haven't been out that way in a few years. Thanks for the memory!! Somewhere around my house is a photo album with pics from Boots, lol!
Yup, Byrne Dairy. A pretty good one too.
Sounds like oneida. Vvs lol
At least it's not Munnsville...
It's just a bunch of hills
checks our for Oneida
That’s a pretty crazy story lol
Two convicted murderers escape a a prison and run around the community for weeks . It was crazy times in upstate ny . They even made a tv show about it.
I mocked my family for being "locked and loaded" because I didn't think the criminals would be anywhere near them, and the police caught the second guy a couple miles from their house.
Gov. Cuomo did a press conference during the manhunt and stated “for all we know they could be in Mexico”. He was obviously talking about the country, but failed to consider the small town of Mexico, NY not too far South of the prison.
Awwww, I kinda miss Andy!
Not sure who's worse, Andy or the wicked witch of the East.
Id take Andy Grabass back in a second over Eyebrows if given the chance!
Lesser of 2 evils I guess... Literally
Her Highbrowness makes me miss Andy.
Craziest thing in the north country for a while! The guy who didn’t get killed was sent to Albany Med
I remember this. They actually ran through our orchard, my mom saw them. We lived in Wayne County at the time.
I saw the tv show. Kid also went to camp a hour away from the prison which was right in town.
I remember that. I lived in Ohio at the time but it was a big news story. I followed it.
What's the TV show called?
I didn't hear about the show but when they did the movie they came to my town to cast the extras. I guess they wanted locals to make it more authentic. My mom was actually in the movie during the restaurant scene.
Was dating this hot hippy chick from Gloversville in the mid 1970's, I was from NYC so I guess that I was a novelty. The night before we went out to the local bar and met a few of her friends. Next day her and one of her girlfriends wanted to go on a hike to show me this really neat little mini plateau up in the hills. When we climbed up to this plateau, which was only about 10ft X 10ft and about 100+ feet high, it was overlooking the beautiful Adirondack State Park. They laid a blanket out on the rock, lit up a joint and eventually clothes started coming off.
Back when shrooms were just shrooms and didn’t have research chemicals put in chocolate bars 🥲
Shrooms are still shrooms, stop eating chocolate bars with Amazon packaging made in someone basement lol
I lost my virginity in a parking lot in Gloversville.
Also legend has it there was a mentality challenged women who used to hang around the rail trail there and pay men to blow them.
I should call her.....
I worked at Lowes and a couple with a dog came to buy appliances. I dealt with them for awhile, because of some problems with appliances they ordered and got close enough that they invited me to a house warming party, which I didn't attend.
Anyways, I thought the guy was pretty chill, was a programmer and that's what I wanted to do in the future. He said he regretted it and wish the pursued his music and I also played guitar, so we talked a bunch. I liked the guy and told them places to hike nearby.
Long story short, she left him and he went back to California. One day he ended up flying back, hiding in her house and strangling her to death. After which he cut her body up and distribution peices of her body to various dumpsters, some as far as NYC (from what I recall). He ended up turning himself in with her legs still in the trunk, maybe 5 miles from where I lived. Cops came to the store because he purchased everything he used to kill her from there.
Lowe’s has everything man
About a million years ago some friends and I decided to dress me up as the ghost of 13 curves in this Victorian style white nightgown and put me behind a guardrail to scare people. Definitely sent a few drivers home to change their pants.
This is the best and most Syracuse story ever, I am so dead. Thank you for making my day lol
I haven't thought about 13 Curves in YEARS. That's amazing.
How long ago was this? And roughly where? Asking for a friend lol
I must’ve been a HS sophomore when this happened and weed was still not legal, especially not for underaged kids. So a group of like 4 or 5 and myself go into the woods at a park to go smoke hidden away from the world, in almost complete darkness. We’re having a good time until we hear something approach us and then just stop in the leaves. This kinda park is the kind of one that no one is really found there after dusk so we’re cautious. We hear some more shuffling and we’re already making our way out of the woods (we’re unsure if it’s an person, a cop, or just an animal).
As we’re getting out of the woods and start creeping along the forest line to stay somewhat out of sight then we see a cop come in. Fuck. We hide the best we can. An ambulance is now here, we’re now confused as all hell. There ended up being two ambulances, a fire truck and some cop cars and park security all on this tiny dirt road at the park.
What’s maybe somewhat even crazier is that a friend saw us walking away from the park back to our houses and asked if we saw the body, which absolutely took us back and made sense for the scene of emergency vehicles we saw. Not really sure what to make of it we explained what we saw. Apparently we a murder thought it was a good spot to stash a body by a bunch of stoner teens.
For the next couple of weeks we watched the news waiting to see something, even just about what warranted a huge emergency response in a small town. Nothing. Not sure if the guys still out there terrorizing pot heads.
WTFFF
Wait what? We a murder? Did someone dump a body? Or was it a prank? Nothing on news about it? I'm confused at the wording lol
I live just outside Lyon Mountain, which is a tiny town in the ADK park and only 20 minutes from Canada. The people who live out here are a special breed of people for one reason or another. The street I'm on is all camps for the most part, minus a few houses here and there. I think we have maybe 150 people in the area.
When I had first moved into the area, I remember sitting at my computer and hearing my dog barking at something outside the window. I look to my left, out of the window, and see an armed SWAT team marching up the road with weapons drawn. Me being me, I waited for them to pass the house, then I went out and took a peek, only to see a few of my neighbors also standing outside with the sheriff, so I decided to go out and see what was up.
Well, come to find out, the guy in the house was a known drug user, so his family scheduled regular visits with him to make sure he wasn't dead from an overdose. When they couldn't get ahold of him, they asked the sheriff for a welfare visit, which was responded to by the drug-guy saying "go away or I'll shoot you" - that was not responded to in a kind manner.
After talking with the sheriff, he simply said "Eh, it's just Terry - he's done this before. Hell, he's shot at us before, but he means well." Needless to say, I was super confused, especially when all my neighbors nodded in agreement. Terry then started yelling out that he was going to kill various state legislators from the area, to which the sheriff simply sighed, saying now he had to do additional paperwork for "terroristic threats" or something. Eventually, the sheriff got on the horn and started talking to Terry, saying he was upset that he had more paperwork to do, and that Terry should just help him out by not dragging it out further. I guess Terry felt bad and allowed SWAT into the house to take him into custody.
I haven't seen Terry in quite some time since then, but I'll always remember the bewilderment of how normal everyone acted about that. As of now, I've seen equally crazy stuff happen out here and am now one of those neighbors who stands around when things go down lol
yeah thats lyon mountain for ya
He may be residing in Dannamora.
My nieces unsolved murder: https://perezhilton.com/samantha-humphrey-teen-found-schenectady-ny-dead-body-tied-shopping-cart-meeting-boyfriend/
Happened in Schenectady. You know, the city with a police department so corrupt someone wrote a book about it, and a whole movie was made about it?? Yeah, that PD is investigating, so no wonder it’s unsolved after all this time
The worst part is her aunt on her mothers side, who lives in North Carolina and literally never acknowledged her when she was alive (only met her two times and never even had her phone number), created a facebook group of people in upstate NY that at one point had over 2200 people in it, convincing them all that my niece’s parents did this to her. Despite her ex she was last seen with being the only suspect. This resulted in violence, death threats, people calling our jobs to try to get us fired and coming to our homes. It’s quite obvious she is lying, and yet all these people believe her and participated in this prolonged harassment campaign against my family and even teenaged friends of my nieces.
I had to move, get a PO Box to prevent people from finding my new address, alert my employer, and invest thousands in security upgrades for my home. My niece’s mother moved out of state for her own safety.
Things I never thought happened, especially not in NYS. It’s not fucking Appalachia for gods sake
Send her story to Crime Junkie Podcast. They are very sensitive and respectful, not exploitive.
I think I might have already, but I will do it again. We (her parents and I) have a memorial page for Sam to try to raise public awareness around her case. Lots of people there recommended their favorite podcasts or YouTubers who explore these sorts of cases and every time I get a new recommendation on her page, I submit to them. So far we have not heard back from any of them, and the one you’re mentioning sounds familiar so I am pretty sure I tried them. But it certainly can’t hurt for me to resubmit our request, thank you for the suggestion
Sorry to hear that. Why not make your own little documentary and post it on YouTube and X?
The guy I mentioned who wrote the book about Schenectady PD being so corrupt? He also wrote the book that would later go on to become Twin Peaks, the tv series. And he is currently writing a book about Samantha’s story and her case! We are so lucky to have him.
A documentarian also reached out to us who quickly picked up on the falsehoods in my nieces other aunts Facebook group. She left that group and contacted us and asked us if she could make a documentary for YouTube about Samantha’s story, and we said yes! Again we are so fortunate for her also.
I have the facebook page I run for Sam, but I work three jobs and live over two hours away from where it happened so I don’t have the resources to make my own documentary, but we are super lucky to have these two working with us to tell Samantha’s story in two different mediums. It is so touching and so needed and welcome
The ex, aka the man suspect, is from Schenectady. Most of the people terrorizing us are based in and around Schenectady, like within a half hour of it, but some are from more far flung places.
One lady told people my brother and I were committing incest, she was from Glens Falls
Another woman who tormented my nieces friends and said my mother (who isn’t related to Samantha because Sam’s dad is my half brother via my father) is a “whore” was raised in Brooklyn, but lives in Ravena now and has for many years. She committed welfare fraud and has a record for it
A lot of these people have no jobs, little to no education, and they speak in Schenectady slang I can barely understand. The victims mother sent me some hateful nonsense I could barely parse out and I told her I’m sorry but I don’t speak Schenectady, so she should give english a try
Thanks for saying that I really appreciate it. I had a public facing job north of Wilton for years and encountered folks from all over, including that area. I don’t think word of Samantha’s case has really reached that far to the VT border, and by now they may not understand how salacious the whole thing has gotten. I am actively trying to raise public awareness but just to get her case solved, minus the bullshit drama
I live here and am so sad about Samantha. I didn't know about the FB group. That's awful
It is so disgusting. Our legitimate page for Sam is here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61553088476323&mibextid=LQQJ4d
But if you go under groups and search “Justice for Samantha Valentine Humphrey”, you might be able to find it. The group is paused currently so it Might be hidden from a search temporarily, but I’m not sure. She concocts the most insane stories. Saying Samantha’s father (my brother) used a bunch of neighborhood kids to track Samantha’s location via Snapchat maps (she was in ghost mode so that’s not possible) and then had a hitman he hired kill her because she had been raping her and got her pregnant. Just absolutely insane bullshit. None of that is true.
Later she changed her story and claimed we all took out a series of life insurance policies against Samantha and killed her to collect, then laundered the money. Which makes no sense because payouts like that on murder victims are automatically reported to authorities for investigation and none of us are suspects, and they are automatically reported to the government for tax purposes so why would we launder money? Like none of it adds up and these people still believe it and harass us over it
I am so sorry this happened to you. I grew up in Schenectady and my heart hurts for that poor girl and her family.
I’ve been in the middle pf the woods and had encounters with a man with a gun, a bear , bobkitty, but the group of men with a briefcase scared me the most .
Wtf was up with the briefcase in the woods ?
Ah yes the old Robert-Feline
Grew up in Dryden....1996 to 1999....look it up, they made a documentary about it.
I had a former co-worker who was part of the cleanup crew when that happened. He found some "parts". Sadly, he was never really the same after that.
I grew up in Dryden in the 90s too. One of the girls was a neighbor. I have to say, the good far outweighed the bad and I think the reputation the town had (has?) isn’t fair. It’s a beautiful town with honest, hardworking people. I miss it greatly.
Grew up in Moravia at the same time. A lot of stuff went down then in Dryden…when I’ve told people about it, they start looking it up and are shocked.
I grew up in Cortland at the same time. I know all about the village of the damned. I also happened to cut their tombstones and set them. My best friend at the times father was the one who found the car behind cortland line
If you can't be bothered to just share it then noone cares enough to look it up
Well, since you asked....multiple horrific deaths centered around the high school. 3 murders, 3 car accidents, 1 suicide and a heart attack. Wanna know more....look it up.
I used to go down the train tracks to smoke pot in a small town. Shortly after leaving I heard and felt a buzz, my hair started to stand up. I turned around to see a ball of electricity form from a transformer atop a telephone pole above the tracks. A loud crack and the ball of lightning hit the tracks and traveled down them for about 20 feet right where I had been just before. No one ever believed me but the power was out in that neighborhood for a while.
Duuuuude . Ball lightning. Saw it during Hurricane Charlie in Orlando. No real documented evidence exists of it.
Yeah technically my experience wasn't really natural ball lighting but a ball of electricity from a man made electricity source but it looked like a ball of lightning to me. Possible a power line fell over the tracks and I couldn't see it in the dark but I don't think so. Pretty sure instead of discharging into the ground it found the metal tracks and just bounced around until the power blew. Could have been a ground wire at the base of the pole and it jumped from there. Was elevated and next to a short trestle vehicle traffic could go underneath the tracks, pretty much traveled over the trestle and dispersed at the end. Scared the crap out of me I know.
Two dudes from my high school dug up a grave while high as fuck, and took the skull home. They got arrested for desecrating a grave or ghoulery. I can’t remember which.
Kevin at Syracuse? He was arrested with the skull.
No - this was in the 80s in Seneca County.
I didn’t know there were multiple incidents. Maybe a string of grave robberies is the real crazy upstate NY story
Yeah, it was a thing back then. He was at Syracuse in the late 80s and got arrested with one of the old mayor's head in his dorm.
How many heads did the old mayor have?
He broke into a mausoleum of the Crouse Family.
At a party in Walden (15+ years ago), a girl said “you’re pretty cool for a black person”
My supervisor at the end of my first week of work at my first job up here was telling me a story about a white coworker being accused of being racist by a black person and she accidentally called the black person colored.
No! 15 years ago? How do you respond to something like that?
Saw bill clinton partying with some kids at a bar in skaneateles.
I heard he might like to party with kids.
Just like another former president who was on Epstein's private jet multiple times. Throw them both in jail.
I was walking my dog down the road and I watched a deer down the road running towards me. I was like... ok, what's it doing? It ran towards me faster and faster at full gallop. Just moments it ran up to me it did a 90 degree pivot and jumped into the woods. What I did not see was that there were three coyotes behind the deer chasing it. My dog went nuts and wanted to attack the coyotes and they went running in different directions. I was left there thinking... what the hell just happened?
I have a weird one. In the early 2000s we lived down the street from a fella named Ernie Gay. For those who don’t know, he is serving 50 to life for beating a canadien couple to death and putting them in a manure spreader.
Anyway, Ernie was always a troubled person who would yell at us from the street amongst other unstable behavior.
One thing has always stood out to me and frankly I don’t know why. One day, he was walking past our house just talking to this tickle me Elmo (he was prob in his early 20s, I was about 12) and he turns to me and asks if I like his Elmo and then proceeds to gush about how much loves this Elmo. Odd.
A 2 minutes later, I hear him screaming at this Elmo doll by the river. Then, he proceeds to punt the Elmo into the river and screams some more about his hatred for this doll.
It didn’t end there, bc after that moment of anger he realized how much he loved that Elmo and started having another break down. Needless to say, I watched all of this with complete confusion and some horror. I honestly don’t remember what happened next bc I went the fuck inside and locked the doors.
Anyway, fast forward like a year and we hear he is on the run for murder and as a family we shuddered. He knew where we lived and def harassed us over the years, couldn’t help but feel like anyone could have been a target, fortunately, it wasn’t us when he completely broke from reality.
All these bear stories lol I got one too.
Went to college at Plattsburgh state, way up north. Our entire campus was shut down in the middle of the day because a bear cub was spotted wandering around the middle of the campus and no mother bear in sight. Professors and cops were running around with their heads cut off trying to figure out what to do with it. I was stuck in one of my science classes. Must’ve been freshman year. Half the class was plastered to the window hoping to catch a glimpse of it running around. No idea what ended up happening to it.
On a separate but even wilder storyline from Plattsburgh, meth was/probably still is a huge issue for the “city”( it’s technically a city but no one who has driven through it would call it that). Anyways, meth problem was so bad that while I worked at gander mountain the city had us create a registry and confirm the ID for anyone buying white gas from the camping section, which was apparently something you could use to help make it? So, I remember there being this small hole-in-the-wall Chinese buffet on the middle of the street in the downtown area right? I went in once, I walked past it a ton, it was incredibly meh food and I never saw anyone except for one or 2 people in there tops at a time. Had no idea how they were still in business. So I’m graduated and a couple years out of college and I see on the news this big drug bust up in Plattsburgh. That Chinese shop had apparently been a front for their massive drug scheme, and suddenly some of the things I questioned back in the day more sense 😅
Fellow Cardnal here (go Burghy!) I was chilling with my friends in one of the low rise dorms with a courtyard in the front. I see a guy wearing all black, long duster jacket with a rifle strapped on his back. I see him walking towards Algonquin dining hall so I instantly call University police because I was terrified he was up to no good (this was around the time of the Virginia Tech shooting so my paranoia was high)
I call them back to follow up and they said it was an airsoft gun and he was testing out a costume. I felt kinda bad because he was just a weird quiet kid who liked guns. BUT when they searched his room he had several real guns and got kicked out.
A couple weeks later he was pulled over in a traffic stop, they found an arsenal in his vehicle (some registered, some stolen) and was arrested. I can't remember if they found a manifesto or not, but I'm pretty sure I prevented a school shooting.
But fr, see something say something!
Also a grad. yeah, bears and guns but…we can’t talk about Plattsburgh without mentioning the Plattsburgh Superhero!
Sadly, my cousin was in the group of bustees.
That time in Tioga county Google maps took me down a 'seasonal highway' that was actually a dry creek bed downhill through the woods.
Just fucking send it bro
On a February morning I was driving my old VW Rabbit North on Pre Emotion Rd between Bellona and Geneva. It was a cold and windy morning but the sky was blue and while there was snow on the farm fields I had yet to see any snow falling. Out of nowhere the salty blacktop in front of me suddenly appeared white. I quickly realized that the road was now covered by a 5 foot tall snow drift made of loose powder. As I locked my brakes my hands gripped the wheel and I did a panic stop while the powder flew in every direction. I just made it to the far side of the drift when a gust of wind turned everything into a white out. I came to a complete stop in my lane but was terrified that I could not see anything in front of me. It was when I was fully stopped that I felt an impact on my drivers door. I looked out my window and saw a dark black hat and the handlebars of a bicycle against my mirror. I rolled my window down and saw the face of a young teenager in a traditional Mennonite hat leaning on my car and shielding his face from the wind. After the wind died down we determined the damage to my mirror was minimal and we went our separate ways. I was so glad the snowdrift slowed me down or I probably would have flattened that poor teen.
Pre-Emption road is no joke, especially in winter!
Elise Stefanik.
SHE'S NOT EVEN FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY.
Her district residency is through her parents summer vacation home in Willsboro. There was a profile done of her during her initial run for the seat - the reporter walked down the main drag in Willsboro asking people (all of 15-20) if they knew her. No one had heard of her, including the owner of the general store / gas station.
I've never met a Stefaniak that wasn't crazy lol
I had a friend who went to primary school with her, said she was a spoiled brat whose daddy used his "influence" so she had the lead role in the school play
Lol I could see, and frankly expect, exactly that
This is the crazy North Country story for sure. Just keeps getting crazier.
If you ask Qanoners, the Finger Lakes is a hotbed of child trafficking activity, thus why Hunter Biden has them tattooed on his back.
Dude I use to know killed a guy in the woods in Latham
I’ve told this story several times and nobody believes me. I have a witness. Was in a bar in Glens Falls during the whole GE, PCB’s, dredging thing. During this time, engineers were being brought in to work on the project and were staying in Glens Falls, Fort Edward, surrounding area. Met a guy who was definitely drunk, but still had his wits about him. We got talking about what we do, etc. He told me he was an engineer brought in for the GE project, but he was previously in New Orleans.
He goes on tell me that he was part of a team that put explosives in the levies just prior to Katrina and that the levies were blown up on purpose to flood the city and lead to gentrification and real estate development. Sure, he was drinking, but I’ve never heard of that conspiracy before or after, and he said it with a straight fucking face. His exact words “We blew those fucking levies and got the fuck out.”
This would have been 2009.
I feel like shit like that has to be happening
Dude. It was so matter of fact, he wasn’t joking about it, 100% no reason to think he was making it up. I have an MA in Psych. I’ve talked to the craziest people you can imagine. This dude was serious as a heart attack.
He was fucking with you just to see if you'd believe him. I used to do it when I worked for NORAD. Just make up shit when I'd run into people on my way to or from work and they'd see me in a flight suit with NORAD and USSPACECOM patches on it. If they asked what I did I'd tell them I was a gunner with the space shuttle program or that I was a drone pilot that flew supersonic drones with vertical take offs and the ability to hover which the public usually thinks are UFOs. Just kind of whatever popped into my head. My actual job was a network administrator. We were authorized and issued flight suits because we worked a rotating watch schedule like the units we supported.
Yeahhhhhhhh… I don’t know man. Grew up in the Air Force with a officer father in defense/civil engineering. I moved to the Florida panhandle two years later. Made lots of friends in SOF, EOD, PTAC, etc. I’ve met Oliver North, been told about projects that the general public doesn’t know about, blah blah blah. This shit set off alarm bells. Also… your “bullshit” stories are things that actually exist.
There have never been door gunners on the space shuttle. I have no idea what the current generation of drones are capable of, since I don't have a security clearance anymore, but in 2001-2007 there were definitely not hypersonic drones that took off vertically and hovered. If they had existed they wouldn't have been flown out of Cheyenne Mountain anyway.
Can’t speak for speed capabilities, but vertical takeoff drones and goddammit MTG space lasers are definitely a thing… They’re currently being tested/marketed as “anti-piracy” lasers on naval vessels, but the actual capability is frightening. Downside is that it requires direct line of sight. Upside is that it, at least when I heard about it, could hit a designated target the size of a US Nickel from 7 miles away. This was from the lead EOD contractor in charge of setting up various targets to see how they reacted. Goats, human cadavers, AKs, various weapons, etc. Nice guy, was fanatical about growing orchids in his spare time. Had a big ass greenhouse full of them.
Your father was bad at his job if he lets secrets slip out to family members. Also how many times were you visited by the FBI?
They did blow up levies when it had flooded like 80 years prior to try to save other parts of town.
Did you notice his reptile tongue flick too? 😂
This wasn’t a “save the town” sort of thing. Really came across as a “fuck the 9th ward/poor black people” event.
Ah yes the Chris Kyle special
Someone drunk told you a fib.
My aunt lives right at the base on Connecticut Hill and one year she had a bunch of snakes come into her house from the hillside. None of her neighbors had that problem.
Connecticut Hill is a weird place….
Grew up on Connecticut Hill…..
Can confirm Connecticut Hill is a weird place.
Worrying about Robert Garrow coming out of the woods at camp and killing us all when I was a kid.
I worked for a landscaping place up in the Adirondacks and we worked at this really cool place that (allegedly) was owned by the Mafia. A few years prior they had replaced their boathouse and while they were tearing the old one down they found a 1920s Cadillac buried under the boathouse. They ran the license plate and it was connected to a murder in Buffalo. I think they either found one or two cars buried on the property.
I was also near Old Forge when that house blew up on fourth lake (I think). There was a local guy who was CONVINCED that wasn't a propane explosion but rather it was intentional. Something about the owner of the house was set to testify in some case (I'm not sure how much I buy it).
I also live really close to the diner that blew up on Route 12 and that also was supposedly done on purpose for insurance fraud by the new owner but again I'm not sure I buy it. I've been to too many places that have subsequently exploded lol.
Just after high school graduation, went to a party on a spot on the river my friends and I would jump off the bridge and hang out on the bank, sometimes camp there. Not remote-remote, but far enough outside of town where people can be left alone, unseen, and unheard if they really want to be.
Maybe 9 or 10 PM, fully dark, party in full swing and the bonfire raging, a random 50-60-something year old man walks down the path from the road holding a tray. He approaches the party, is friendly enough, but no one knows him. In the tray is jello shots with....Jagermeister. Why he created this unholy amalgamation is beyond reasoning or logic, but he did it anyway.
So naturally, being 17-18 year olds, we are wise enough to not blindly trust this man, but still dumb enough to dare someone to take one of these declarations of contempt for the natural order. God wept as this truly cursed elixir entered the stomach of one of our braver cohorts, as he was truly powerless to right the wrongs happening in his Kingdom.
The party proceeded as normal, and a few of us ended up taking the shots because our friend did not eventually keel over. Eventually the guy just wandered off and presumably walked back to his manse to sate his latent insanity, and further defile the nature of recreational drinking in his fetid cauldron.
Anyway the weird part of the story is no one died.
Visited by "something" on top of Mt Zion near Marlboro 4 summers ago and it scared me so bad that I piled everyone into the family truckster and fucked off back to Brooklyn @ 3am. Best way to describe it was you know in CLOSE ENCOUNTERS how all the lights start turning on and off on all things electrical? Yeah... something like that, but with a heaviness of an invisible dark presence.
Plastic factory in my small hometown of Petersburg filled the water table with PFOA chemicals and suffered essentially zero consequences. I was dragged to town meetings as a late teen/early 20s to watch my redneck neighbors berate the EPA about how they posted fishing and swimming advisories in the little Hoosick spots around town. I kept swimming.
I will add that Elise Stefanik watched it all happen and didn't do shit! I hate her ass for that reason alone
The ex head of the kkk for the region owned the gas station on the main street by my university. All he seemed to care about was green. I am sure he hated all the people that bought from him that didn't look like him, but we only found out from the older hippies in the area.
John Jamelske dungeon
For hometown? The 2012 firefighter shooting in Webster. Made national news
I remember that, I'm from there too. That was wild.
Middle of the pandemic I can’t find weed anywhere …I mention this to my neighbor. We take a one mile atv ride to the side of a mountain. He has a whole side of the mountain covered in pot plants. His dad had been growing for years. Not good weed but it still got u high. What I’ve learned is the best weed ever is unexpected weed. When someone shows up at a party w a sack. Or during thanksgiving .
Finding this sign posted up when I was working out in Oswegotchie, the Alabama of NY.
Oh and right after graduating high school, my buddies and I got wicked drunk and went to chill on the bleachers of the football field. We happened to notice that the shed was left unlocked and inside were 2 golf carts. We find the keys stashed right above the door inside and proceed to take turns driving these fuckers and smoking blunts in the back.
We put the golf carts back exactly as they were and start to leave when the cops show up and shine their floodlight at us. All my friends bolted, I happened to be in a shadow so I hid. Realizing how dumb that was after about 15 seconds I bolt too and have 2 cops running after me. I was pretty fuckin fast tho and lost them in the woods.
I'm fucking army crawling out of the woods to a road when the cops roll up and stop right where I was. I get low and just pray they don't see me. They did. Back to running thru the woods and I somehow managed to lose the cops AGAIN and found 2/3 of my friends.
We head out to another road and managed to lose 1 friend in like 30 seconds. So it's just me and my other buddy trying to get back to our friend's house (we have no idea where he is) and as we're making our way over we keep seeing cop cars and having to duck in random yards, behind dumpsters, etc.
So we call another friend who wasn't with us cuz he didn't drink and ask him to come pick us up from this random ass gazebo in an apartment complex. The friend we immediately lost also decided that the gazebo was a good spot to hide so we were only down one friend at that point.
We get the ride over to missing friend's house and he got caught by the cops but told them we were just there playing with our glow in the dark frisbee. This drunk and high mfer actually convinced them and apparently the cops were only there cuz of some kids riding bikes in the parking lot. The cops knew he was drunk but since we walked over they didn't really care and they had no idea about the golf carts cuz we put everything back perfectly just before they got there. It's literally unbelievable how much luck we spent that night.
Hell Raisin!!!
Not mine but told to me.
Picture this. Watkins Glen, 1973. Farmer I worked for went out to milk the cows at 0300. There’s a naked woman using the hose at the milk house as a shower. She apologizes, farmer said it’s no bother, she finishes, and walks off into the woods with still not a stitch on. Nobody else around, other than 600,000 of her closest friends on the next hill.
Summer jam!
Went tubing in otsego county and cut across this guy's yard to get into the water and he came out shooting a gun. Not sure if it was at us or into the air but yea awkward start to a relaxing tubing trip to say the least
where can you go tubing around there? preferably without getting shot at lol
So I'm in oneonta. Best place I have found is to get in at pine lake then float down to the bridge by the post office or get in at the post office and float down to fortin park
OMG. I remember watching him on the news when I attended Plattsburgh State. I thought he did a decent job. Now I think he is just gross.
A well respected corrections officer in the community was grooming/molesting a teen from the AAU basketball team he coached. It eventually came to light & he went bonkers. Attempted to murder his wife, set his house on fire, and was on the run for a few days. His wife ended up dying from smoke inhalation. Hopefully he never gets out of the slammer.
One time Jan was on the roof pissed and Beef's Omega couldn't outrun the cops on the way to Mr. Bs next to Zayre's.
This one time, I went white water rafting with some of my buds up near North Crick. Then we got pretty hammered on Labatt Blues and played chickenshit bingo.
Fuckin A right bud!
At Gold Mine and got high score on street fighter. Dave at cumbys with 6 pack. Party off potter road said Ben. Pants on fire. Road golf carts at 12am. Party at janitors house next to reservoir. Tigger slayed at gambles bakery.
I'm going to mess this story up. It's my dad's story. Back in the early 70s there was a serial killer loose up in the Adirondacks. Everyone was on edge. Dude was straight up killing campers and stuff. My dad was about 17 at the time and one night freaked out when he saw a guy wearing glasses looking in through his bedroom window. He swore it was the killer. No one believed him. A few days later it was revealed that the serial killer's sister lived in my dad's town, Witherbee. I believe he was caught soon after.
To this day my dad says it was the killer.
Is Rochester “upstate”? If yes, then Nick Tahoe’s, if you please…
They still held XC Ski meets in -10 degree Farenheit
Learned last week that a restaurant in Watertown used to accept Medicaid/ebt as payment for food & alcoholic beverage. 😂
I was born in New York upstate but had spent half my life out in Southern California moved back to Upstate New York and had my 12-year-old son with me. we jumped in my Silverado 4x4 and hit the back roads one night and I saw a large frog jumping across the dirt road so I stopped the truck and got out and went looking for it and when I looked back at my truck my son was still sitting in the truck I told him get out the truck, and he shook his head no. I told him get out the damn truck he still shook his head no. I was wearing shorts and I looked down at my legs in the headlights and I had five leeches on my legs.
I didn’t witness it but I live pretty close by and it was a funny story https://newjersey.news12.com/break-in-black-bear-spotted-trying-to-break-into-downstate-correctional-facility
Rayford Faulkner-Schenectady legend. The only bag headed, crack smoking. Homeless man with a cable access tv show. His leather jacket maybe older than most of the users her. And reverse black face. He walks around with baby powder on his face and is embarrassed for being African American. Makes frequent anti gay slurs and comments and picks on the mentally handicapped. I mean, he is our big foot.
In college at SLU in Canton we used to love to find all the random rope swings on the local rivers. One day we get lost in who the hell knows where. Drive up a driveway to turn around and see this woman and her daughter holding hands walking towards us. But the weird thing is their faces were all screwed up… like sorta sideways on their heads. Definitely not normal- some sorta inbreeding we came across and we moved outta there at lightening speed.
I went to SLU and am from/live in the North Country. I'm interested to know where this was because I have some Deliverance type stories.
I was chilling at home after I got out of work, parents asleep when my best friend called and asked if I wanted to go to Wendy’s at the truck stop (it was a 24 hour Wendy’s) with her. I said sure, why not. She swung down and picked me up, saying it didn’t make sense to take 2 cars. She grabbed me and I was telling her about the two cops my coworker and I seen hauling ass past my store as we were pulling out when we seen a cop speeding at us, no lights on. I texted my coworker that I had just seen another cop as she texted me before my friend called saying she had seen a few more before she got home. After we got to Wendy’s, we just relaxed as we ate and I got a message on Snapchat from another friend (after I sent her a pic of my Frosty) and she told me there was a shelter in place order in my hometown (the Wendy’s actually has the address in my hometown but is technically in another small town). I tell my friend I was with and started scrolling through Facebook and texted my former coworker who worked at that Wendy’s asking if she knew anything about it. There were a few people in the lobby and the workers from the truck stop walked over into the Wendy’s and they started talking with the Wendy’s crew. There were a few people in the lobby of the restaurant when a manager of the truck stop announced that they were now locking the place down due to the shelter in place order. They said we could leave if we chose to but we had to immediately go straight home (police orders) so my friend and I left. She didn’t want to drop me off, so I called my dad to lock the door (I figured I would have been back within an hour so I didn’t lock it) and that my friend would bring me home when the order was lifted. It wad almost midnight when we got back to my friends house. I got into bed (I have my own bed at her house since it’s basically a second home for me) and ended up falling asleep. At around 3am, she woke me up saying the order had been lifted and she would take me home so I could get some rest before we went to Syracuse. Once I woke up at around 9am, I found out a guy had stolen a truck from a bar that had hunting rifles in the back. They found the truck but no rifles and the man who stole the truck held a family at gunpoint with a stolen rifle two streets over from where I live. They did apprehend him shortly before the order was lifted.
For me I was hanging out by a fire in Meridith. We were watching the stars. And actually had a shooting star go across our heads and actually hit the roof of the house. You could hear it bounce off the roof
I piloted a plane over New Paltz and called my flight plan for my destination and arrival . Approaching the New Paltz area a black bag fell in front of me by several hundred yards but I saw it. It was a skydiver that his shoot didn’t open. This was in 1985 or so. I read the story the following day on the Times Herald Record of his passing
The mushroom lady.
One day a couple of buddies and I decided to take a ride up to Garnet Lake. Garnet Lake is in the middle of bumfuck nowhere and requires you to drive a long dirt road to get there.
While we were on this dirt road, we came across some geese in the middle of the road. We stopped and got out to try and get the geese out of the middle of the road so we could continue.
One of my buddies stepped into the woods to explore and right along side of the road found a huge patch of mushrooms (he was into mushroom hunting at the time).
All of the sudden, an old woman just appeared out of the woods. She walks up to us and says “we don’t treat the ducks like that around here!” And stood there on the side of the road, staring at us.
With the geese gone, We got back into the car and left. The woman stayed standing there, staring us down as we left.
We made our way to Garnet Lake, did our thing and spent around 2 hours over there then started the drive back. We get back onto that dirt road and are coming up to where we first saw mushroom lady and SHE WAS STILL STANDING IN THE SAME SPOT. 2 HOURS LATER!
I swear this person wasn’t actually human or something.
A child was murdered and the town and county only focused on one suspect, the black soccer coach ex-boyfriend and not the cop ex-boyfriend caught on video just a block or two away.
12 years and still unsolved and still infuriating all the missteps along the way.
Potsdam! Crazy because I remember there being all kinds of drama but I forgot what the actual true story was. I mentioned it in my post as some kind of soccer coach committed a murder.... Thanks for the reminder and how horrible is it that the LIE is the one that pops into my head first....
There was also a story with a guy driving around with his mom chopped up in the back of a pickup truck for quite some time...
I moved up from Louisiana a couple years ago and I’ve seen more confederate flags here than I saw in certain parts of South East Louisiana 🧐
Lots of trips down Pigman's road(you'll know if you're from the area wth im talking about)but one time saw people in robes near a fire chanting a little in the distance. Then shouting and looked they were heading towards us so got the hell out of there quick. Oh and once there was a partial dog skeleton right by the side of the road.
Don "American Pie" McLean was giving an outdoor concert when he was hit by a beer can.
He shouted "Fuck this shit!" and stormed off the stage.
I went to college and grad school at Plattsburgh and made it out alive.
When we were kids in Utica everyone would jump off the old barge into the canel. One time I watched my friend come out of the water covered in the most foul muck. Then the corpses of deer started rising around him. Just pieces of deer floating and dissolving into the water. It was one of the most horrifying things I think I've ever seen.
We later found out that hunters would drop carcasses into the canal to get rid of them.
A long long time ago they trolled bodies out of the Utica reservoir dropped by the local Mafia. This is back in the 80s I believe. I used to think about that a lot whenever we used the tap.
The moose that hauled ass through Clifton Park went right through my back yard.
One of those over achiever state troopers went to pull me over once, I let him get close to my winding with 5% tints which he knocked on as I had shut the car off when I had pulled to the side. When he knocked on the window I turned the car back on , immediately went into launch control, launch, flipped the bird and dusted his ass. I turned around on one of those turn around thingys and passed him going the opposite direction with his throttle wide open 😂 great times.
I've never been. It was crazy.
my buddys a cop near syracuse and was directing street traffic when a guy pulls up next to him eradically and is screaming. the driver of the car had attempted suicide by gun and was unsuccessful. half his face was blown off but still conscious. he managed to drive the car from wherever he did this to find a cop for help. the guy survived
High school principal caught a student with a gorilla mask on streaking through the school, and she ran after him at least a mile downtown..

It did end up on multiple news sources across the country, including the NYT!
In 1997 Earl Zea cut off his own penis with pruning sheers to allegedly stop his boyfriend from trying to rape him. It happened in Johnstown. He is considered one of the most memorable guests on Howard stern and Jerry springer.
A couple kidnapped an Amish girl that lived very close to us. The photos that came out when she was found showed the building she was being held in. It appeared to be a building next to where we lived previously. I could throw a rock from our driveway and hit the building. I had family (a young girl) that was babysat there and said the guy prided himself in tickling people. The fbi spoke to many of our families to gather information.
Another was a young boy who got in an ATV accident and died. I think he was around 11. He was part of the “beloved” family in the area. They were a beautiful, kind, successful family. The calling hours reached all the way down the highway the place was located on. Hundreds and hundreds of people. I remember we were bowling when the news broke and I was with his cousin who was one of my best friends. It pains me remembering his face when he heard what happened. The last message in our clash of clans clan (this was a long time ago) was from the boy who died, and none of us could bring ourselves to say anything or leave.
Phoenicia where Town Tinker Tube rental business operates. People rent tire tubes and get a small bus ride up Rt 28 to a spot on the Esopus Creek where they can drift back. Sometimes the rains fill the local reservoirs too high so gates open and release water into the creek. The rains also swell the creek making it run faster. Each year after the winter the creek has to be surveyed to see what has changed with the channels and fallen trees. This changes the customer drop off locations for safety.
One August after heavy rains a father and 14-year-old daughter come from Connecticut. The father has visited previously and insist on being dropped off in the same location as last time. But this was not the place that year due to changes in current and obstacles. The CT father pays off the driver who took the other passengers to the correct drop off spot. The dad and girl got caught in the branches of a fallen tree in the rushing water and she drowned in her father's arms. The driver was fired and there was a lawsuit, but I don't know the outcome.
I sold a leaking pull-behind camper to a guy who pulled it into a field and lives in it to this day. We get drinks and lunch about once a month together.
Lived a few miles outside of town in northern New York. You know, north of the Adirondacks..
Fraternities used to drop off their pledges out near our place at dusk with a keg of beer that they needed to get back to the fraternity house by sun up and it needed to be empty...
So we would have drunk in college kids rolling kegs down our street in the middle of the night.
It was probably pretty scary for those kids, a lot of them being from more populated areas. I thought it was funny as a kid my parents didn't particularly enjoy the noise. Luckily it was a short season, pledging and all that..
Oh yeah and they were murders... One guy was driving around with his chopped up Mom in the back of his pickup truck for a while from what I understand.
Also, there is this big scandal where basically a local soccer coach who is black has been persecuted and pursued as the prime suspect for murdering a 12 year old kid. The thing is, the stepdad is a cop and is almost certainly the murderer... It's a fairly dark story I believe it's still technically unsolved.
No matter what, I believe they have confirmed that the soccer coach is Innocent but his life was made into absolute hell.
The North country is racist AF

Who killed Betty Conley?

In the 80's we used to pass this giant ice cream cone on this golf course driving north on the Taconic State Parkway. We heard it was Tom Carvel's property and wanted to see for ourselves if it was true. So a bunch of us dumb kids pulled off and trespassed. The angry security guard caught us and took us in a golf cart to Tom Carvel himself. He spoke to us and was really cool. Had no family of his own. He didn't call the police. Gave us ice cream and laughed when my buddy asked where the idea for Cookie Puss came from. True story.

One time at band camp…
Went camping years ago with my wife and kids. Tent for us. Tent for the kids.
Went to sleep and my wife heard something outside our tent. Animal of some form. We didn’t see it. Woke me up (because that’s how Carol and Mike Brady did it: Mike. I hear something downstairs. Go check…)
She turns on the flash light.
I asked her: do you not REMEMBER what happened to the person with the flash light in Jurassic Park?!?!?
I took the flashlight from her and turned it off. Kids were still quiet in their own tent.
She’s desperate to turn the light back on and get to the kids. I think they might have been 7 and 5.
You can go out there. But not with the flashlight. (Sky was bright enough to see).
Everyone was fine. Animal left in about 5 heartpounding minutes.
Next morning, a sliced up donut package was found about 300ft from the site.
Kids forgot to put it back in a sealed container we had.
An aggressive deer assaulted my car 😁just kidding- we both lived to tell a tale!
When I was 12, about 130 years ago, I was waiting for the school bus in Jay, out in the sticks. Dirt road. It was early in the morning, maybe 6:30, no one out, and I'm 1/3 of a mile from home. I heard a loud crashing sound across the street and was frozen in fear. A black bear comes ambling out into the light and starts blinking, just across this dirt road. Bears have indifferent vision in close range and rely on other senses. I had spent my childhood imagining what I'd do (my plan was to climb up a utility pole nearby) but could not move because I was so scared. I then remembered my father saying they were more afraid of me, so I mustered up a loud cough and the bear turned around and tailed it.
Scared the beejeezus out of me.
