Happy election day!

Today, you can take part in a relatively uncommon democratic exercise - a general election. Millions of people across the country will go to the polls to vote for their preferred candidate (or spoil their ballot, if they prefer) to represent them in Parliament.

On r/ukpolitics, we're expecting things to run hot. Just like the old days, we'll roll over into an election night thread at 9:45pm, where it will be replaced with a results megathread that will run throughout the night.

u/cjrmartin has created a mega spreadsheet with constituency data, declaration times, and more.

Our subreddit prediction tracking questionnaire is available here.

🗳️ Our guide to polling day

The headlines:

  • Any registered voter can vote in this election. You do not need to bring your poll card.
  • You can vote for one candidate (list) in your local polling station (where) between 7am and 10pm.
  • You need to bring valid photo ID. You can use an expired ID if the photo still looks like you.
  • If you need to, you can apply for an emergency proxy vote before 5pm today.
  • If you have an unsent postal vote, you can hand it in at your local polling station.
  • Our voting system is first-past-the-post (explain). The candidate with the most votes in your constituency becomes an MP.
  • The joint broadcaster exit poll (what is it) is released at 10pm tonight - our first glimpse at what the result might be.
  • Results will come in throughout the night and early morning, with first results by 1am, and the majority of results by 5am.
  • There are 650 seats in the House of Commons, each representing a constituency, meaning 326 are needed for one party to have a majority.

TV and radio broadcasts:

From 7am, there are rules for broadcasters preventing discussion of "election issues", so don't expect any of the main channels to show you anything exciting until 10pm.
