What is this tree? Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee
Looks like Large Leaf Magnolia. Magnolia macrophylla.
This tree seems to lack the heart-shape at the base of the leaf blades. I would suggest Umbrella Magnolia Magnolia tripetala
I think you are right! I am unfamiliar with those and just assumed that this was just a variant of macrophylla.
They’re oddly distant relatives, with M. tripetala being far more closely related to assorted Asian species.
I cant remember if we colloquially called it a "cowcumber tree" or if that was a close relative.
Not sure I've ever heard that one, but I have heard a lot of different references to cucumbers in the common names for various magnolias. Probably due to the weird fruit/cone thingy.
I agree. Macrophylla leaves are more equal from front to back. Still, a pretty tree.
I definitely agree this is an umbrella magnolia, I studied forestry at the university nearby and we saw these in the smokies frequently in the understory.
Pawpaw?
Not quite. It was my initial guess as well, but pull up pawpaw leaf formation and you should be able to spot it. This tree thingy has a sort of round crown at the top. Pawpaw's grow leaves along the stem and then round out towards the edge so you don't have a near perfect circle leaf pattern, it ends up more tear drop overall shape.
While i will say the leaves are similar in individual shape, the grow pattern is not right.
That’s what I was thinking.
Some king of buckeye perhaps? I can’t tell if the leaves are serrated or not.
Rarely seen Clean-Your-Camera Lens variety of buckeye
I’d make the argument that it’s actually more common 🙃
Leaves are giving me a notion of buckeye, anyone else agree?
I thought so as well until i read other’s comments and it looks like the middle arrangement has more than 5 leaves? Unless im seeing incorrectly
Yeah, I agree. I think the other comments have it pegged for Magnolia. Forgot that they grow wild in the United States and some places.
It’s a hickory Edit: probably a shagbark hickory unless the leaves are completely smooth on the edges then it’s a pawpaw. Clean your camera lenses so we can see better for next time
Oval leaves like that are usually hickory.
