Bullshit calling bullshit calling bullshit.
And a simple gold heart on a chain
Re-upping this because I'm in a Tracy & Hepburn rabbit hole right now.
I've always wondered what Carm meant by this. Is she referring to the nature of a secret, passionate affair (Tony and Svetlana, which is the topic of conversation when she says this), or is she comparing her marriage to the Tracy-Hepburn affair? As far as I know, they didn't have a notoriously cantankerous relationship; on the contrary, she was deeply devoted to him and kind of suspended her public identity as a Woman of Independent Means in order to care for him.
Anyway, that line in Whitecaps, and Edie's burning passion in the delivery, it got me thinking. I guess explanation #1 makes the most sense, but it's hard to suss out. Y'all got any thoughts on this besides quotation shitposts?
Resurrecting this because I also went down a Tracy and Hepburn rabbit hole about this. Carm says that to him after Tony tells her that Svetlana has things to say and thoughts to share, implying Carmela doesn't. The Tracy and Hepburn trope can apparently mean either Belligerent Sexual Tension (slap-slap-kiss) or it can refer to how Katherine Hepburn's wit was often an equal match to Spencer Tracy in their movies, which wasn't as common then in movies as it is now.
So I'd say Carm's referring to Tony wanting matched wits with Svetlana and the added bonus of Tracy and Hepburn having an affair with each other is the cherry on top.
anyway, four dollars a pound
From Wikipedia: Tracy and his wife Louise became estranged in the 1930s, but the couple never divorced; his 25-year long relationship with Katharine Hepburn was an open secret.
