I guess it depends where you grew up. Meth has been looked down on for as long as I can remember and I’m 40 years old. Even as a kid the terms “crack head” and “meth head” were synonymous and used as a negative.

It’s not about the introduction, it’s about when it became prevalent, an issue. I’ve worked in LE for 20 years. Before that, I lived in ‘the hood’ inner city, crime ridden, etc. Fetty didn’t pop off until the past decade.
Of course it existed, but it's only recently that it's become a huge problem and added to every street drug frequently. People were not adding fent to heroin in the 80's, or even in the 2000's.

My son was sedated with ketamine after an accident earlier this year while also being given liberal amounts of fentanyl as a painkiller. His teenage siblings were utterly freaked out by it, even after I explained they were pharmaceuticals before they were ever street drugs.
There were reports of fentanyl in Chicago back in the 80s or 90s but it wasn’t widespread. They used to call it China White.

It was mostly a plot device to make the birth of Jr and Livia's scheme more believable, because on the surface it's unbelievable. Which is to say it's contrived - it's a weak area of the plot. It also serves to frame Meadow in a rebellious, bad-girl light. And to answer your question, no meth did not have the overblown bad reputation it does now. It was viewed as a sibling of powder cocaine - still bad, but not crack or heroin.
It was a reach from the writer not being around the drug & not knowing the real dangers that it presents
