That is very kind. Thanks so much. Really gone headfirst into this as much as possible and trying to learn! :)
2, 4, 7 all have interesting subject gestures. Good luck!
Thank you, I am always trying to focus on getting an interesting subject. It is what my first pictures when I got my camera, was always lacking, but I am starting to be able to spot these things now.
You found the light, you found nice moments. Well done, keep at it!
Very kind, thank you.
You have a great eye. My only constructive comment is that some look over saturated. Don't go as heavy and it'll look way more pleasing to the eye. Besides that, great work. Keep shooting and sharing!
Thank you a lot. If I was to look at my own pictures as critically as possible, that is probably one thing I struggle with. I also haven’t quite got the best monitor for editing, so I end up with wacky exposure sometimes, so I check them on my phone. I am looking at getting a decent colour accurate monitor that doesn’t make me under expose my images all the time, in the near future.
You doing great. The fact that you are able to critique yourself is huge. Just remember when it comes to editing... Sometimes less is more. I used to be heavy handed with my edits and learned that people will appreciate your work more if the pics look solid but yet they can't really tell what you did to get I to look like that. (not sure if that makes sense). Also, use the histogram in whatever editing program you're using. This will visually help keep things relatively balanced and exposed correctly. Great work my friend. You're doing awesome.
Thank you very much. I will definitely try implementing those things into my workflow. I am really trying to do the less is more thing. So much easier to see it overdone in others photos, not so easy with your own in my opinion.
Ahh that makes sense.
I like them all - a fine bouquet of life, and it’s simple, noticeable beauty. Stick with it!
Very kind, appreciated! :)
4 and 5 are definitely my favorite, you have a great eye!
Thanks so much! They are my fav too by far.
Awesome! I really like the ones people on it!
Thanks so much :)
I enjoyed them
Thanks a ton! :)
Good edits and colors. Some cropping would help you a lot.
Seems to be a theme, I am definitely Focusing on that from now. Thanks a lot for the comments on the edits, as it is something I wonder if I am even doing good at.
I think you have great natural instincts and a great eye.
I especially like the train shot and the pipe
What is your camera/setup?
Thank you! The train shot I took on an Eos 2000d with the kit lens that I borrowed off a pal to see how I liked photography , but the rest I have taken on a Sony a6400 I bought, using mostly the tamron 17-70 f2.8 and the one of the skater, I took on the 16-55 kit lens for the Sony camera as I didn’t my have zoom lens yet. I do have the 35 and 50mm 1.8 primes from Sony too, for when it gets dark
2 is great. And i also like 4, but i would’ve made the background a little bit colder and keep the main subject warmer. For the contrast.
Thank you that is really good advice. I will have a play around with that for sure. I do tend to make the subject a bit brighter, and often add some contrast, but I will try the saturation thing too.
You're welcome! :) Good luck!
You are capturing ‘something’. There are things happening, and we can see it clearly. I like it. You have an eye.
Thanks!
Alot of promise for sure. You have a good eye. What camera do you use? IMHO I think learning a bit about using negative space and depth of field to isolate your subjects as well as some framing and composition is what you should be working on first.
Thank you. That is really my main focus. Trying to get an eye for it. It is a challenging thing for definite, that I look forward to one day feeling I have a solid grasp of.
Nice photos, I particularly like 3 and 7
That’s wicked. Thanks so much.
Brilliant, I really like them.
As an aside, for some reason I just knew it was the UK within the first pic or two even though I didn't recognise the train or anything. Think it's our typical overcast colours.
Thanks so much. I am trying to make pictures pop, but feel weird when I misrepresent the way the place felt too much when I was there with regards to colour temps and weather etc, so I am glad that came across in the edits! :)
These are good, 2 really stood out to me
Thank you a lot. I really appreciate the kind words.
i wish i took the orange pipe pic its so good
Thank you :) found that just the other day when I was about to go home as I was struggling for shots.
Pretty dope
Thanks a ton :)
Did it good work
Thank you friend
Pictures 2 and 6 have something in them that distracts me. Other than that, I love them. Especially 1, 2, 4, and 5.
Thank you, that is a valid assessment. Experimenting with other elements in 2, but 6, I do wish there wasn’t someone else there, but I still like the shot.
Sorry, my comment wasn’t in full (Were watching that The Battle For Britain about the miners strike.), but I wanted to come back to this …
It’s the tree in No2, and the bottom of No6 that put me off. With that said, I think the filter (Is it a Nik filter?) or editing is fantastic, and something I’ve tried to go for in my own photography. 4 and 5, and to be fair 6 and 7, tell a story. That’s something I’ve been advised to do, and centre your image.
That’s cool! Thanks for the kind words. I was experiementing on that day with adding some foreground elements. I was resting my camera on a junction box and trying to sorta get a bit of a thing. Maybe it doesn’t quite work as intended. The tree, I just liked the texture it added, and the skeletal structure of it, but again, perhaps it doesn’t work as well as I hoped. Just trying things out as I go really. Ah lovely thanks, on 6, I just edited it in Lightroom, I really like that sort of look on photos. Although I don’t quite always get it looking quite right in people’s skin.
I appreciate this kind of specific advice, because it is so much easier to remember what to focus on. Thanks again.
Wow just wow,
Thanks so much 🥹
Doing great mate, just a shame it's in Plymouth.
🤣🤣 tell me about it lol, thanks! :)
I like the one of the guys in safety vests and the skateboarder one best. Nice work.
Thank you friend. Very kind.
Overall I like. Nice job.
- Like the contrast and pov. Might be nice to try portrait orientation.
- Love the composition. Might want sightly tighter crop on the right to trim out that edge.
- Love everything about this. Composition color and lighting.
- Love the main subject. Way too saturated tho. Also the background is distracting.
Keep up the good work.
Thank you, that is some great advice. I had a suspicion I had gone a bit far with #4, I will try and tone it down a bit. Very kind on the kind words too, I saw the pipe and had to snap it. Walked past it on a grey day and it was not nearly as photo worthy!
Hope you have a good day.
These are really good, well done!
You've got a good eye for interesting shapes and lines, and I quite like the composition of some of these shots (2 and 3 are really nice). I also quite like your editing style; kinda gritty, but without losing too much colour/vibrancy. I know a lot of people are saying that they're oversaturated, but I disagree. It's more of a preference thing, and I suspect that those commenting that will prefer a more muted, lighter style (which is very popular these days), which I personally often feel come across as washed out, but again, it's a preference thing. You're nowhere near 'bad HDR' levels of oversaturation.
One thing I would say, is that you'll probably want to be a bit more aware of what's in the edges of your frame. Sometimes it looks like you're being quite careful with that in some parts of a shot, but missing things in other parts. #4 would have been a much nicer shot with either a step forward, or a step backwards: you either wanted the whole arrow sign in there, or not have it in at all. It just distracts from the subject with it being so prominent in the shot as a foreground object. On #2, which I really like, you could have likely waited half a second and not had what looks like the blur of a person moving out of frame (I may be mistaken, and it's a static object, but it looks like something moving). You can sometimes get away with cropping, but you don't want to rely on it, as you'll find that you'll end up with a lot of shots where you have to chose between cropping out something distracting, but losing the balance of the shot in the process.
On the flip side, you've clearly thought about the framing on #5 to have both the pedestrian crossing lights in frame. So it looks like it's something that you are aware of, which is awesome.
Thank you very much! Love the feedback. Yeah I guess the editing choices in my case definitely are down to personal preference, and the way you described it is basically what I’m going for. Often dragging a lot of colour out, then saturating certain parts, so I guess I am riding a line that some people don’t appreciate. With that said, I like it, albeit it not EXACTLY what I was aiming for in some cases, but close enough. I am held back by a bit of pure inexperience with the software etc at points though.
It is definitely on my mind re: the composition, but I definitely don’t get it spot on all that often. Working on it though. If you saw a lot of my other pictures, these are definitely the more thoughtful ones I have taken.
Thank you for taking the time to give so many tips. I really appreciate it.
Oh my, I don’t know what it is about number 1 but I absolutely love it. I also love #3 and #4! The others are pretty great too!
Thanks so much! :)
1st is best
Thank you, was one of my first pictures that, on a camera I borrowed from someone! :) hope you have a good day!
3rd and 4th are good pics, definitely keep going
Thank you :)
Good angles but loose the saturation.
Thanks I will focus on that. :)
Keep up the good work . Love the composition!!!!
Too kind :) thank you!
Haha not being kind , you deserve the compliment.
Nice. Keep at it !
Thank you! :)
scrolling on this post on my feed gives the illusion that the train is slightly moving, lovely
Thank you! :) I have been experimenting with movement a lot in my shots, trying to vary shutter speeds, and doing panning shots etc more recently. This was one my first pictures I took, so there wasn’t many creative decisions made really, just trying to take an image that wasn’t blurry or out of focus. The camera I used for that hunted for focus basically every time I tried to focus on everything, that it was a touch blurry around the logo, but I managed to sharpen it a bit. All the best pal.
These are beautiful! Keep it up 🙌
Thanks so much 😃
I really like it a lot. But I noticed this sub tends to flatter authors even if then - lets be honest - suck. Your photos are really good, very nice composition and subject of every photo is obvious. I like no 3 the best, but no 2 would be sooo much better if you'd crop that girl closer.
Love the color grading ! Only advice is take more photos because your doing great :)
Thank you very much! :) really appreciate the kind words.
Really cool. Keep snapping.U have a great eye and mind combo going on. Can’t wait to see more of ur shots. Loved #2 I can see that in the wall of an Architecture Firm
Thanks so much. You are very kind. :)
They're pretty good for your first photos. You have a good eye, keep developing it.
If you want some inspiration in how to frame , I suggest you look at other photographers' work.
It's OK if you want to continue with your own path. It's a good work. 👍
Thank you very much. I am trying to consume a lot of photography stuff, to do my best to pick up these things, but also trying not to copy people’s style too much. Will keep at it to improve :)
Loooove the second one
Thanks so much :)
Dope shots! You got yourself a talent there, bud!
Thanks so much. Means a lot!
In a nutshell, needs a lot of work. All very boring. But keep at it. You’ll find your thing. Sorry if that sounds harsh. But would you rather be lied to and continue to be boring or have an honest opinion and strive for better? For example photos 4 & 5 look like posters you’d have seen in a job centre in the 90’s. Very dull. The rusty pipe there’s nothing else to make the rusty pipe an interesting feature it’s literally just a picture of corroded metal. Justin Bieber skateboarding down a hill there no sense of motion. The woman against the wall looks like she’s been shot by a peeping Tom. The train photo and the people crossing the road are just snapshots no thought gone into them, not interesting, throw away shots. You need to visualize what you want to capture, frame it. Wait for the right moment to capture an expression a reaction, movement. It’s not quite as easy as just pointing and clicking. I don’t want to be nasty I want to make you think. And I look forward to you proving that you’re much better than this! Enjoy your photography regardless of anything else! I see a few people have liked them, take that as a win.
I mean, I do actually appreciate the feedback, as like you said, I won’t improve otherwise, although if I’m totally frank, I’m fairly good at taking criticism, but someone who perhaps was looking for some balanced feedback and can’t handle that kind of thing, it would border on harsh, but I appreciate what you are saying. Always striving for the best subject I can. I saw in some pov videos that was what people were doing, basically finding a good composition, and waiting for the subject so that is what I have been trying to do more recently, albeit after I took most of these.
Is there a desire for the latter in the last paragraph? I’ve been really passionate lately about wanting to educate about what this genre is really all about and have been mulling over doing YouTube stuff.
Thank you that is very helpful advice. It is all very new to me so it is easy to get wrapped up in one thing or another, but I have been looking mainly at photographers websites and staying away from instagram and all that. YouTube was mainly for me, just initially to watch instructional stuff to learn the equipment, but I have moved into watching pov’s while I do admin work. I will watch these with a pinch of salt like you said.
Thanks for that man. I want trying to bash you. Just look at the work of some more experienced photographers and remember that those quality photographs don’t just fall in their lap. A lot of it is planning ahead to capture the light or hanging about waiting for that right moment. It’s easy to think a situation will make a great photo but just waiting a fraction longer to capture a reaction will make them photos much better. Good luck in the future.
Thank you. I am trying to consume a LOT of photography stuff to pick these things up. I guess at least initially, getting a sharp photo that I liked was challenge enough, so whilst they aren’t perfect,‘I am pretty happy with my progress so far. I am feeling like my inexperience with the gear isn’t holding me back like it was a month ago when I got it so I am just looking forward to seeing real improvements. Besides this, I am not really one to share my stuff, I take them just for my own enjoyment, which has both positive and negative aspects to it (I don’t nessecarily know if they are actually any good) anyways, thanks again, and I appreciate you.
I came here to see if I could find one honest person among the ridiculous "brilliant!" and "amazing!" comments. You're that one honest person. And naturally, downvoted.
Thank you
This sub needs a tonnnnnn of work, I’m finding. It also almost concerns me that I’ve gotten so many highly-upvoted posts in the same sub where this has almost 300 upvotes. God I hope I’m not getting upvotes from the same people upvoting these. No offense, OP. But I agree with this commenter here wholly.
i’m really REALLY curious to see your shots, can’t see anything on your history. care to share a link?
You don't have to be nasty because they gave a critique. What beginner photographer doesn't deserve some healthy criticism? Especially when they ask for it directly
Thank you, i was a bit harsh though looking back on it. I could have expressed it better. Sometimes I write then I think.
I was nasty? I’d say the guy that left the comment was pretty nasty, though there was some solid advice there.
The implication is clearly that you want to see their photos in hopes that they're not great and you can discredit what they said. You asked to be rude, not because you were interested in their shots or anything.
No I didn’t ask for my work to be critiqued.
haha nice work deleting the other comment - were you afraid of something?
as i said, that’s fine if you don’t share.
my intention was mostly to frame your advice for people reading through the comments section: you have nothing to say for yourself, AND you’re afraid of critiques apparently.
have a good day!
What’s your problem? “I’d love to see your shots” I’m not affraid! I’m not posting photographs. I have my opinion. I deleted my first comment as I don’t feel I have to explain myself to you. You were triggered by what I said about these photographs, you failed to see the positivity and intention in my comment but I guess retrospectively you can see that I am right and know what I’m talking about. So don’t be an areshole. I’m not in a position to post anything at the moment!
yeah that’s alright, you don’t have to share online.
my intention was mostly to frame your advice for people reading through the comment in the correct way: you have nothing to say for yourself.
have a good day!
Excellent photos. I loved all of them.
Thanks so much! :) very pleased you like them.
These all look better cropped. you have too much space in between the top of your subject and the top of the picture. 2 and 3 are kind of useless.
Edit: after looking again, I think the issue Is that all of your pictures have the subject in the dead center of the picture. I think that’s why I liked them cropped more. Try working on composition.
Thanks for the feedback. I am experimenting with cropping more so I will focus more on that.
I apologize for it saying anything positive. You have good discernment with your editing. Don’t get discouraged by negative feedback. For being new your pics are coming out of the gate strong. You’re going to be a great photographer. Keep at it.
You know what, I hadn’t actually noticed how these are so central subject wise, and you are totally right. I have more recently been trying to work on composition a lot more, and my more recent pictures I think are more strongly composed. But yeah 100 percent right with what you are saying about these imparticular.
I really appreciate the other comments about editing etc. I am really enjoying the post processing part of photography tbh.
1 and 3 are really cool photos. Majority of the people ones feel off, 7 is good, but 6 and 4 are a little messy
1 and 3 are absolutely not street photography by any stretch of imagination
Yeah, they’re cool as not-street photography photos. I guess OP took the more liberal definition🤷 “I was standing in the street when I took em!”
If only we had mods for that sort of thing haha
I challenge you to avoid vertical shots..
Trying to do a good mixture! :)
You don’t have to do a damn thing if you don’t want to. Want to shoot all vertical (portrait is the right term), then shoot all portrait.
Fuck em.
Op is like “ new to photography “ and meanwhile posting porn here 😂.
You style is very nice dramatic and realistic also. Color grading is also amazing so what ever filter your using dm me while I finish this comment.
Looks amazing !
I like 1 & 3 the most. Nice job.
Thank you a lot, I appreciate the kind words.
This is supposed to be a street photography sub. Neither of those are street photography.
I mean I took them walking around on the street. I am sorry it doesn’t fit into your neatly defined box of what you consider to be street photography, but as far as I’m concerned, I don’t know what other kind of category you would put them in.
I was blown away by the first photo of the train, because I just have never seen that kind of train at that angle. My approach (which is just one approach; you will develop others) with some of the ladder pictures is to do more to highlight what the main subject is doing and do this by cropping, or by changing the lighting. Because the subject you choose are so powerful.
Thank you. That is very kind. I am always interested in hearing some critique because it is hard to know if you are improving, besides your own personal enjoyment of your images and maybe nailing a certain type of image.
I like the first pic
Thanks so much. Was one of my first pictures that one, felt very lucky that the moment I walked to that spot, the train came by almost straight away, and I have been back a few times and waited a while but not had any luck so far! :)
The second image is good because of the composition, in particular the framing. There is not really anything interesting in the others for me.
Thanks for feedback.
I am also new and I like your photos, you have good eye. But one thing bothers me a bit, which is this preset. I find a bit cold. Maybe tryout without presets and try to find you own stlye.
Good luck and I wish you a lot of great photos 🤘
Thank you mate. Most of them I actually didn’t use a preset, but a couple I did. Just tried my best to make what I thing is a good style for the picture, whilst learning Lightroom as best I can, but I am trying to nail a style down. But it is hard when you are new just getting the hang of it all. Hope your photography journey is fruitful friend. Have you got anywhere I can see any of your pictures? All the best mate
Great than, well done. Lightroom is great, I use it mostly, but less with presets. Keep going champ. 😉
You show promise but I would describe your style as “peeping Tom”. You’re hiding behind things to get your pictures. Why is the tree 50% of the photo in 2 when it is disorganized, out of focus and uninteresting? Why did you take 4 with the wire blurry in the foreground instead of shooting through the wire? The wall on the left on 5 is distracting and annoying. I don’t even know what is happening at the bottom on 6. Stop being afraid to delete the wall between subject and photographer. It’s almost like you’re afraid to take pictures.
Thank you I appreciate the feedback. It is actually my attempt at adding some foreground elements to the pictures, and in 5 a bit of a natural frame as much as I can. Just experimenting. I am not actually hiding myself or anything like that and stood right out the open shooting, but if that’s how it comes across in the pictures, then maybe I need to do it slightly differently.
I particularly like 2 and 7! I’d try cropping 7 in to portrait and see how that looks. But anyway, some nice shots here, keep at it.
Thank you. I actually took that shot quite wide, and I cropped in to keep the symmetry of the timer screen thingies and simplify the scene a bit, but I will give it a bit more of a play and see what I can come up with. Thank you again!
When everything is in focus nothing is in focus they lack depth..
When everything is in focus nothing is in focus they lack depth..🙏🏾
Sorry I am not following what you mean bud.
I think you have a talent and you should keep grinding away
Thank you, that means a lot.
wow. i thought my disgust had a limit. seems it does not.
Very promising for a first try. Keep at it!.
