What does that mean? Discovery list?
It’s a funny roster rule from old MLS that gives clubs the first priority to sign big name international players.
Dislike. Do they have to pay something extra to get a name on this list? I mean I can’t imagine how they wouldn’t.
Not that I know of, but I do know that discovery rights can be sold. In the past few years there was one bigger named player (Bale maybe?) that was at the top of the Miami discover list and they sold his rights to LAFC for a comically small amount of money.
Discovery Conflict Resolution If one or more clubs attempt to add the same player to their respective Discovery Lists, the club that filed the claim on the earlier date will have the priority right to sign the player. If one or more clubs submit a discovery request on the same day, then the club with the lowest points-per-game in the current MLS regular season (all clubs must have played a minimum of three regular season games) will have the priority right to sign the player. If a club wants to sign a player on the Discovery List of another club that has higher Discovery priority on the player, it may offer that club $50,000 in General Allocation Money in exchange for the right to sign the player. The club with the player on its Discovery List will then have five days (or three days during the Secondary Transfer Window) to either (i) accept the General Allocation Money and pass on the right to sign the player or (ii) make the player a genuine, objectively reasonable offer.
This is a fraction of the rules around Discovery Players/List. I didn’t see anything obvious regarding talking to a player, but it sounds like IF City SC wanted to truly pursue Reus, there is an avenue for that.
Rumor is Sargent is on ours, but I wouldn’t count on him coming to MLS anytime soon
Follow up question : is there some limit to names you can put on this list? I tried googling and not coming up with answers.

What exactly does top “priority” mean?
I can't get upset about any aging Eurostar not auto going the LA-Miami route.
It doesn’t have to be Reus specifically, but holy fuck we really need attacking midfielders because our offense right now just isn’t gonna get it done. We also have one of the lowest payrolls in the league, I don’t wanna hear the “designated team” bullshit we need to spend on actual players

I think they've been openly telegraphing their strategy all along with all the "our principles" talk and salary equity. I was too thick headed to realize it might mean "there will be absolutely no deviation from our original 3 to 5 year plan." There may be financial guardrails in place, or maybe they are crossing their fingers and hoping the academy produces MLS stars in the next half decade.
What particularly sucks is I think the front office is smart enough to target that DP attacking creator who can excel in the system.
The ledge is imaginary. Remember that last season was unpredictable. Kindle and Pfannenstiel both said last season that they needed real help, which is why they brought in Diego Gigliani. We will build, but it will be a long haul situation. We’re paying off massive debts from joining the league and building a top tier stadium. Signing Reus would be nice, but also be impulsive. Trust the system not the vibes.
Why should fans give a fuck about paying off debt? They need to spend money on actual players, Orlando was actively building a top tier stadium and that didn’t stop them from bringing in Kaka. Columbus brought in Cucho Hernandez and they just finished constructing their stadium not too long ago. “Trust the system” also doesn’t mean a damn thing when there is no offensive system. It doesn’t have to be Reus, but they need actual players along side Burki, Klauss, and Löwen
Because it’s unrealistic to go from spending at the bottom of the league to signing superstars. Teuchert makes sense. Reus doesn’t.
You don’t have to sign superstars, just better players than we have, especially in the midfield. Reus also makes a ton of sense if you want to fix your offense, but it doesn’t have to be him.
You can have faith in the FO for identifying good players but also say the team needs to be better, coddling FO and ownership doesn’t help anybody
I think you’re misreading my comment. I do trust the FO. I think signing Teuchert and approachable players makes sense. I also think it was slightly unreasonable to expect Firminho or Reus.
This all goes back to 2017 when the voters were too misinformed about what was going on, and now it's going to be a long build to becoming a top team

Discovery list will be meaningless in a few weeks once Reus is a free agent. Im sure Lutz & Co. know that and think it’s stupid to pay Charlotte to negotiate when it’ll be free soon. All Charlotte is doing right now is holding him hostage.

Yeah, can’t argue with that. Coastal teams like Miami and the LAs ask forgiveness instead of permission. I’m of the camp that we should just hold talks and pay whatever the penalty is to Charlotte in GAM. And frankly, I don’t get the appeal of Charlotte. Play in a half empty nfl stadium except for 2-3 games a year when they sell out. It’s turf, and it’s under a perennial underperforming manager (has more career losses than wins) and one of the least liked owners in sports. I just don’t get it.
We can talk to him, but if we want to sign him we must get Charlotte’s permission and discovery rights. They are transferrable. And honestly, European soccer sources are saying he has no interest in going to Charlotte; Tepper is just trying his hardest to land a big whale.
Manuel Veth said recently that sources directly from Reus’s camp informed him that Marco is only interested in playing for a New York, LA, or Miami team (of course). If that is true — but none of those clubs pursue him — then he will have to either stay in Europe, or choose an MLS side that is interested in him. Between Charlotte and us, I have to imagine we have the edge due to Bürki and Pfannenstiel.
