Report: Lakers signing Bronny James to multi-year guaranteed deal
Take Your Kid To Work Day Gone Wild

It’s so funny how LeGm is kinda a meme but it’s actually facts I mean lakers are giving him literally anything he wants. I still can’t believe reddick is coach, LeCoach can do what he wants now !

Dang, Colin Hanks out here catching strays. At least he’s had some good performances (Fargo). He’s not a hall of famer like his dad, but he’s no bum.
A better acting comp for Bronny is probably Sophia Coppola.
Until Bronny does something as good as Orange County, the Colin slander needs to stop.
In a rush to type their comment, they clearly miswrote Colin where Chet should have gone, the other Hank
Fantastic director though. Maybe he could run tape.
Sophia had Lost in Translation, so I guess they're getting a ring.
Jaden Smith
Nah Chet Hanks is the better comparison lol. Bronny doesn’t belong in the league.
Putting things in more perspective, he was an average ncaa player at best. With any other parents he goes undrafted let alone a multi year deal. This is a really bad look on the lakers, and NBA as a whole. I'd feel for the kid if he wasn't the son of a billionaire legend
He was not an average ncaa player lol he sucked
I was trying to be diplomatic lmao yeah he was cheeks
So it’s more like the daughter of a very famous firearms coordinator getting lead gigs on movie sets while doing blow and lacking skill, training, etc… well that never goes wrong at least.
Maybe she was just a little Rusty
Well good news is Bronny’s not likely to get anybody killed.
Knock on wood. I could see him giving at least one coach a heart attack.
Or himself.
Ohh, he went there.
Until that over 1.5 FG doesn’t hit and somebody can’t pay their bookie
Damn
For a minute there I almost thought I could be an average NCAA hooper
honestly man, nothing against you, but Bronny would probably cook you and 99% of the people in this thread lol
He was also 18 and had a cardiac arrest 3 months before the start of the season. Not saying this means his NBA career will be any better but expectations should have been low
Drafting/signing Bronny is how the Lakers guarantee that Lebron will re-sign with them. Whatever they pay Bronnie is peanuts compared to the money Lebron is worth to the Lakers. I wouldn't be surprised if Lebron demanded it in order for him to re-sign.
Lebron is going to sign for less. This is equal to my Dad giving 19 year old me an allowance. For multiple years.
Not to mention keeping Lebron invested in the Lakers after he retires.
Curious, how does he compare to Marcus and Jeffrey Jordan. I'm sure Michael had enough sway to get one of his sons drafted but they never made the NBA
The difference is Michael is from the old school nothing is given to you, you have to earn it style. He could have I’m sure when he was GM/owner of the hornets, but he respected the league too much.
Michael probably : "Fuck them kids"
No Jordan probably was objective and his competitive nature told his kids they needed to do this on their own. Now he did hook up most of the family in his Jordan brand as executives. But imo if his kids didn't have what it took to play in NBA he wasn't going to pull strings.
I think this is 100% the case. No way MJ getting his kid drafted. They do it on merit or do something else.
Statistically he’s worse than Marcus but they were also different divisions and teams
I feel for the kid who didn't get drafted.
Bronny produced LaVar Ball type numbers.
He's not the first and he won't be the last. Cal ripken Sr Had 2 boys that played in the mlb. Cal Jr's son was drafted and never had his cup of coffee, fizzling out in triple a. Being the son of one of the greatest ss's of all time and not making it to the show looks like a failure to most. But in all honesty, making it to aaa is a feat in and of itself.
Didn't Colin Hanks actually get some lead roles? This is like an extra getting a 3 movie deal.
His season on Dexter was good
He was also fantastic in Fargo
Orange County
I feel bad for the kid who won’t get a shot now.
Someone could have gotten their family generational wealth but Lebron wanted his trust fund kid to get a few more million for something he didn’t earn.
Only Colin is actually good at acting. Jr isn’t so good at basketball.
Colin was great in a couple of things, showing some range. The better comparison is Will Smith forcing a career for his kid.
Collin earned his stripes with Fargo! Leave him alone!
Hopefully he turns out to be Colin and not Chet. As Chet says himself, "Respect. Ya dun no ... Booyaka, booyaka."
Chet Hanks is the most talented in the family.
if his name was JeBron Lames he’d never get a look
So stupid but this made me laugh so hard…thanks for the laugh.
Nothing could be my father from the truth.
Doesn’t this just mean he signed his rookie contract?
Edit:
Thanks all.
My knowledge is purely based on NBA 2k MyGM mode.
The 55th pick in the draft never gets a multi-year guaranteed contract. Isaiah Wong, last year’s 55th pick is on a non-guaranteed two way deal.
Wong was ACC player of the year and led his team to the final four averaging over 16ppg. In other words, leagues better than Bronny.
Played basketball in middle school with Isaiah Wong. Crazy to think I’d read him being compared to Lebron James’ son.
Crazy to think I’d read him being compared to Lebron James’ son.
I bet you Isaiah Wong could beat a prime George Washington in 1 on 1
Not at a cherry tree cutting comp though.
Was on reddit with a guy who played basketball in middle school with Isaiah Wong. Crazy to think I’d read him being compared to George Washington.
George Washington III put up 1.2/.3/.3 last year for an awful Michigan team. He better be able to
But could he dunk on Lincoln?
Insulting to Wong, honestly
It’s the Wong comparison to make.
I’m just a casual follower of basketball… is Bronny the absolute worst player for his skill level to be taken at the draft? Or is he just getting more attention because he’s LeBron James son?
Pretty much asking if this is unprecedented or has it happened before?
Trying to be as non-biased as possible, in relation to his actual basketball skills, is that I don’t know. He was a highly ranked college recruit, suffered a heart attack and it was questionable whether he would ever play again. He was part of a hyped USC squad that played some of the worst basketball I have seen at that level. He averaged like 5 points per game. In my eyes he lacks size and elite NBA athleticism. His team mate, Boogie Ellis, who averaged like 17 points per game and garnered all-PAC-12 honors for a couple of seasons went undrafted and signed a free agent contract with the Kings. It is unprecedented.
Scouting reports say he has the athleticism.
What he's lacking is size and experience at guard.
With the performance Bronny put up in college, he would not be considered a draft prospect if not for his dad.
He wouldn’t be considered for most international leagues with those numbers either. If you put up 4pts a game there aren’t any scouts coming to watch you from anywhere.
Nuggets drafted Peyton Watson with the 30th pick in 22 - in fact, they traded back into the first round to do so.
Funny enough, you’re the second person I’ve seen on Reddit to compare Watson to Bronny. And again I’ll say; Watson is a 6’7 athletic freak with obvious upside as a finisher & a switchable defender due to length & agility at his height.
Bronny is a 6’2 guard, and while he has potential as a perimeter defender, he’s only just a GOOD and not elite athlete by NBA standards at his height (he’s no DRose or Ja) & he’s pretty raw at everything else you would want from a player his size.
Thing is, you can afford to be drafted raw on offense if you’re simply tall or an elite athlete; if you’re only 6’2, you need to be an above average ball handler, shooter, or passer by draft night…and Bronny is really none of those things.
I laughed watching the Today show hosts ask Dwayne Wade about it. Wade just kept going on about “he put in the time, getting up at 530am to improve his games, etc etc”. lol if that’s all it took I should be I. The NBA.
Giannis has had two brothers in the NBA, including one on his team, though not drafted by Milwaukee. In this instance though, Bronny was specifically drafted by LA because of LeBron saying he wanted to play with his son and would sign a deal with the team that selected him sometime in the future.
I don’t remember there ever being something like this in the NBA and Bronny’s contract is 100% the doing of his Father.
Giannis brothers get bad rep but they both made NBA on their own merit. Then signing for Bucks is a recent development but they were both good on their own.
Thanasis worked his way through D-League and eventually ended up on the Knicks roster. He also played on one of European best teams.
Kostas was drafted by the Mavericks and played in the G-League. Got picked up by Lakers after that and played in their developmental system. Again played really well for big teams in Europe.
Alex is only 22 and is yet to make it to the NBA but he had some stints in G-League.
The only one you could argue around Nepotism is Thanasis but even he is a decent 6'7" player worth an end of bench NBA spot due to his success in Europe and D League.
Yeah, I mean, I’m sure if two players were equal and one of them is Thanasis, Milwaukee still goes with Thanasis to keep Giannis happy, but that’s the extent of it, the situation with Bronny is a whole other animal.
It’s not too unlike Gordie Howe who came out of retirement in his late 40s to play with his two sons. He wouldn’t have played without that guarantee
He got drafted because Lebron potentially wasnt gonna stick with the lakers otherwise. He was a below average college player, on a bad team.
To be clear - he is not bad, far from it. D1 ball is extremely tough. He just isn’t at nba level. He’s still prob leagues better than us redditors
No probably about it
He was a legit D1 prospect but not a star even before the heart incident
Not even a starter. SMH.
He'd probably in the conversation for top 50 worst players ever drafted. 1 year of NCAA and absolutely abysmal stats. Usually when you see a kid with bad stats get drafted it's because they're incredible athletes or extremely large and the team execs think they can develop them. Bronny is like 6 ft tall and has shown absolutely nothing to indicate he might develop into an amazing player.
This is all the Lakers stroking Lebron's ego by taking care of his kid, and it's pretty weird and awkward to watch.
Your comment just summed it up this ridiculousness perfectly
Seeing bronny suited up and crying immediately after being drafted is cringey. The lack of self awareness is incredibly astonishing.
I’m not defending this in anyway but Isiah Wong is 4 years older than Bronny. Dudes 19. Would have definitely been better to develop more in college but with his dad and the NBA resources he’s going to improve a lot.
Point taken, I just don’t think Bronny did anything of merit in his time with USC. The guard he backed up went undrafted, so even if Bronny does improve, it isn’t because the Lakers saw something that others didn’t, other than a way to get LeBron to re-sign.
Best case he’s fantastic like LaMello after he went pro. Worst case, Bronny becomes a streamer when his dad retires.
Ok but Trayce Jackson-Davis and Chris Livingston were drafted 57th and 58th last year and signed a 4 year deal with the first 2 years guaranteed. So there is precedent for this.
Yeah, but most late second round picks would be getting two-way, non-guaranteed deals. I could be wrong, but it seems rare that the 54th pick would get a guaranteed deal
He went in the second round. There is no obligation to multi year deals
Yes, but I think it’s because only first rounders are guaranteed several year contracts. Second round draft picks don’t get 3-4 year deals usually and certainly not guaranteed. Given he was a reach in the second round, he wouldn’t possibly get this nice of a contract on another team.
Literally right before this it was announced the Heat did the same thing with their second round pick. This is a common thing for players with potential, it’s low-risk bet that ties them up for years to come. Sixers did this a bunch when they were rebuilding, Thunder did it, Heat obviously.
From OP's link that you apparently didn't click:
Unlike first-round picks, who are designated a four-year deal based on when they are selected, second-rounders are free to sign any type of contract.
In the 2023 NBA Draft, 15 players signed guaranteed deals, three were stashed overseas or in the G League, and 10 inked non-guaranteed two-way contracts. Only three players drafted after pick No. 44 signed guaranteed deals.
Coaching or Scouting staff position?
…you may want to sit down for what we’re about to tell you…
Assistant LeGM
Ball boy
Mascot.
Beyond embarrassing at this point.
How can Bronny not feel embarrassed by this? Like you’re the laughing stock of the NBA, that’s gotta weigh on you a little bit.
It’s not like he doesn’t already have the money or fame without doing this charade
I’m guessing the millions upon millions of dollars he’ll be receiving will soften that blow a smidgeon.
His pops is a literal billionaire and a major celebrity. There are far less embarrassing ways he could get millions and millions of dollars off his dads name and success
Exactly, look a Jordan's kids. They're regular people who obviously weren't nba talents and just faded away. When your family is set for generations you don't need to be the sports world's most obvious nepobaby.
Bronny is at best a g league project.
Jordan’s kid dating Pippens ex wife was pretty embarrassing for all involved..
Yeah but it’s not like Jordan was cheering him on lol
Out of spite, maybe he was lol
He’ll have a hard time being coached by his dad, who is too fast for his size. Theres some world where his dedication to the game of basketball doesn’t come from his play on the court, but instead as a coach.
The best way to get there at his age is to play a while and at as high a level as he can. Through nepotism? Oh mostly definitely. But that’s a path to being his own guy in a way.
His pops is a literal billionaire and a major celebrity.
That's not his money though. And I imagine playing in the NBA is his dream, so at the end of the day, I don't think he really cares what we think. How it will turn out in the end though, who knows.
I don’t know how embarrassing this is yet for him even if it easily could if he sees the court beyond practice much. I thinks it’s very embarrassing for the Lakers already.
Onlyfans was the answer.
There’s absolutely zero chance Bronny’s grandkids aren’t set for life.
At this point there is a mountain of investments and compounding interest that will keep them wealthy probably until the sun burns out.
2mil will get you at least $70k annually and that is only interest from your account.
By now it’s hundreds of millions of dollars. The singular lifetime Nike contract has long been rumored to be around $2 billion.
Add in the dozens of other endorsements over the years and it becomes clearer how stupid rich Lebron is.
5% interest on a billion dollars is $50 fuckin million. Every year! And that's if you stick it in a savings account, you'd have a whole team of investment managers putting that to work so your yearly return would be closer to 10%. $100M a year. Every year! And if you dont spend all of it, it goes back into the pile to make even more money. The snowball doesnt stop once it gets big enough
Imagine your Dad pulling strings to get you a job, the whole company knows and you are by far his worst coworker. That's Bronny's life right now.
As somebody who grew up with a very successful businessman father, this was always my worst nightmare. I went into a typical job in a completely different industry just because I didn’t want to be the guy coasting a placeholder job off somebody else’s coattails (even though I obviously still had inherent advantages like going through school without debt).
And thats obviously far different than your dad outright forcing a team to give you an NBA spot even though you aren’t nearly good enough
Stephen King's son has always written under a different name and still couldn't shake those comparisons.
Jaden Smith vibes
I know we'll never hear anything honest, but I truly would like to hear what Bronny thinks about the whole situation, because Jaden Smith 100% thinks he's the shit and deserves everything that's ever been handed to him.
Wait until Bronny stars in Space Jam 3: Out of His League.
Somehow Will Smith seems even more egotistical than Lebron lol so that probably plays a part
Willow Smith, on the other hand, is pretty talented. Maybe Bryce has a shot?
I don't know, that happens literally all the time in pretty much every industry, and those people are usually cool with it.
Usually they convince themselves that they deserved to be there anyway.
Or you get somebody like Maya Hawke who recently said, straight up, that she doesn't give a shit that she's a nepo-baby.
He's probably not losing any sleep over it.
Lol right now? That will be his life for the rest of his career. The only thing that might change that is if he plays for a new team and becomes the face of the franchise. Preferably while Lebron is not yet retired, too.
He's not the worst coworker right now.
He's a kid who truly believes he can be a great co-worker.
Lots of people getting into positions are not exactly qualified for because of their parents or someone they know. And a lot of them go on to do really well and some of them don't. We don't really know yet if he's going to succeed or fail in this position.
I think people are misunderstanding that this kid has been told he is a great talent his whole life.
He got a full ride to USC which isn’t a bad program. There’s a very real chance he truly thinks he’s earned his spot.
I mean, I wouldn't mind getting a multimillion dollar deal and being a bum
The trash talk this kid is gonna have to deal with is gonna be legendary.
Oh, you ain't wrong. Gonna Michael Oher after "Blindside" came out level trash talk.
idk ask Austin Rivers and how he dealt with it when he was coached by his dad.
Maybe he's like Jaden Smith. Just going full no shame nepo baby.
Laughing stock? Really?
No lie- Bronny has all the tools to be a serviceable NBA player, access to top notch training and coaches and daddy stuff.
If he fails it will literally be all because he ain’t good enough.
The league is about to beat his ass, it’ll be must watch tv. If he plays.
Dudes gonna be the 15th man until his dad retires.
This is a roundabout way of getting LeBron more money
Yeah, Giannis's brother is in a similar situation, but that dude is actually big and tough and comes in and commits like 4 hard fouls in 90 seconds. I'm not sure what Bronny is going to do because he's like a WinCo Davion Mitchell.
I’m more curious what happens to Bronny after LeBron retires. Like unless he’s actually the heir apparent, is he going to be bounced around team to team or end up in the gleague?
They're gonna retire, hand in hand
Historic!
Bron will become the Lakers GM once he retires. That way Bronny will always have a job
It's actually clever when you realize it's kind of a roundabout way of paying LeBron more than the maximum.
5 yrs/$215 Million
The whataboutism from the talking heads is beyond embarrassing. It’s all about meritocracy until it’s not..
My dad wouldn’t even let me be a legal assistant at his law firm for a summer
Now we know why JJ got the job. What other coach would put up with this clear nepotism? I can't imagine Phil Jackson or Coach Sloan being cool with this.
Lol
Will he make the twelve man roster at the start of the season? That would be another slap in the face, but I assume since he is getting a guaranteed deal, it’s likely so.
Edit: And I wonder if LeBron will have a say in how many minutes he gets…
I mean at this point he kinda has to since he is signed to a multi year guaranteed deal and not a two way contract.
He's getting a lottery pick treatment ATM.
Nothing in the NBA will suprise me anymore.....
Well LeBron is rumored to be willing to sign a team-friendly deal. If he takes a corresponding paycut, who are we to tell the James family how to spread the money around.
Funniest shit is if Lebron signs on another team after this.
The funniest timeline is if Bronny suddenly becomes amazing and is as good as his father
He’s so good they cut lebron lol
He’ll force them to keep 60 year old LeBron on the team.
Bronny then signs a team friendly deal to keep his dad on the roster
Can't wait for the lakers "trade lebum" threads
Honestly it would be incredible TV if he just absolutely pops off in his first game.
80 point opener
This will never happen. Who do you think you are?
Checks username: 👀
Expensive bench warmer
Water boy at this point.
thats some high quality James family H20
The same thing happened in cricket. Sachin Tendulkar is considered one of the GOATs of cricket had his son drafted into the same team he was a part of and after he retired was still active with behind the scenes. His son was riding the bench for a couple of seasons and when finally given a spot in the team got his ass handed to him and after that he played 2 or so games in the next season and never to be seen again.
How are Lakers fans accepting this? Your team is being fleeced by Lebron and friends with contracts for his son and podcast friend.
i feel like it will take until 2030 to recover from this
How are Lakers fans accepting this?
Funny thing is that Lakers management doesn't consult with me before making these kind of decisions. So I just kind of shrug my shoulders and go on with my day.
It was me. Jeanie sent me a text asking for my opinion so I told her, “do what you think will stir up r/sports the most”. Good job, Jeanie. Good job.
One way to think about it is that it's advertising for future superduperstars that the Lakers take care of you in your final years. They did it for Magic, then Kobe, and they are doing it for LeBron. So if you're like Giannis or Jokic or maybe Wemby down the line and you're looking for a team, the Buss family has shown you they go the extra mile for you.
If lebrons taking a paycut who cares who the last man on the bench is lol
LeBron is not the same guy who carried the Heat and Cavs... the Lakers barely made it in the playoffs.
It's probably just for the league minimum.
Giannis's brother has been on the Bucks roster for several years now, this isn't new in the NBA.
First game lebron tears ACL forcing retirement. Now we have his fing kid still on the books. How is this being approved?
Do ACL injuries occur very often in basketball? I don't follow basketball very much.
Yes
There are a couple per nba season.
What a stupid decision. Can't wait to see ESPN try to justify this one.
The amount of revenue they are about to make from Sr. playing with Jr. will FAR outweigh what they pay him
This is so perfect, now I can always tell my kids “Do you wanna be Bronny James or do you wanna make it on your own in life?”
In my opinion, the only way the Bronny signing can work is if it is a two-way deal or whatever and he spends some time on the Lakers' G League team with the opportunity to play in some regular Laker team games.
Nepotism Basketball League
Nepo Baby League
Does Bronny think he deserves this? Like is he not embarrassed
I feel bad for his USC teammates tbh, many of whom were better players than he was, but now he’s here getting the NBA opportunity. I’m not saying he can’t do it, but there are players who are having to prove themselves at the NCAA level, who are more effective than Bronny was, who may never get to play in the NBA.
I know Bronny isn't an NBA caliber player but am I wrong in thinking that having Lebron and Bronny together will generate a ton of revenue for the Lakers as long as they are both on the team?
jack_nicholson_nodding_yes.gif
Mfw the Lakers ensure they will remain irrelevant
I get that LeBron's just taking care of his son, and the Lakers probably want to do everything they can to keep him happy and playing in LA, but this is not a good look for the kid.
Bronny's set for life, they've given him all the tools they can to help him succeed, they should've given him a standard deal comparable to any other 55th pick and let him find his way. Even if he quits the league, the kid is still set for life, giving him too much can be just as bad as giving him too little.
lol .... How embarrassing
Not only the first father son duo in the NBA. But also the first draft pick ever that experienced a cardiac arrest less than a year earlier. Maybe this is gonna start a trend of teams picking kids who have had recent cardiac issues? What’s next?? Seizures? Aneurisms?
Will he say pass me the ball daddy or pass me the ball LeBron?

The shittiest part of all of this is the first guy out of the draft. Someone who isn’t a spoiled talentless kid. The current NBA is unwatchable and mind numbingly boring. Too many entitled divas in the league. Should just make it a reality TV show
FWIW, whoever that may have been had the chance to sign wherever they wanted as an UDFA rather than being limited to the Mavs. They don’t get the glory of being drafted, but they do have more say in their destination. That could be a good thing in the long run.
Should just make it a reality TV show
It basically already is
Nepotism.
His jersey should say LeNepobaby
I’ve been a fan of Lebron since he was drafted, even in the early days when I was a die hard Laker and Kobe fan which in some circles is considered sacrilegious. Maybe Bronny will a decent or even good player, but this is just sports malpractice. It seems the goal behind this move is twofold, keep Lebron happy and in LA, and sell tickets. This team however is not even remotely close to winning again, which is the very antithesis of what Purple and Gold represents.
Now let’s look at all the organizations who have kids working with their parents and talk shit about how the kids suck at their jobs and wouldn’t be there if it weren’t for the parents
While annoying, I was willing to overlook getting his son drafted when he otherwise wouldn't have been. But to now get him a guaranteed contract... come on man I can't take anything you say or preach as serious anymore.
That's very rare for a late second round pick. Iirc only 1st round picks get guaranteed money. But we all know it's because he's Lebron's son. It is what it is.
I mean. His nickname is King James. Is anyone surprised he is trying to turn the lakers into his monarchy? Now he has his Prince
I’m not so much bothered by the nepotism, but I am bothered by the fact we’re being told it’s not real. Like why make all these statements that this was earned? Just let it be and move on.
