[OptaJohan] 21 – Aged 21 years and 303 days, Bart Verbruggen is the third-youngest goalkeeper to ever play at the European Championship and the youngest since Iribar for Spain in 1964. Entrusted.
StatsIt's going to feel weird for him when he's not benched for the next game.
That was such a bizarre situation, I hope he's just the starting goalie every match next season. Or at least every league match.
I've been really impressed by him in Oranje, especially how calm and confident he is on the ball.
Doubt Hurzerler will do the same and he p much cemented the spot by the end of the season. Once he removed some errors with his feet from early on it was clear he was the best pick.
To be fair, the sheer technical prowess De Zerbi required from his goalkeepers was on the extreme end. There were many occasions where a simple kick out would’ve done the trick, but you could always see that playing out of trouble regardless the circumstances was the main objective. For such a you gk in his debut PL season, in this particular role, i think he has done splendidly.
Love him but it’s also wild that he already starts for the Dutch, speaks to their GK situation I guess. Even though he was switching with Steele he developed pretty well through the season and p much took the spot by the end of it, not the finished product just yet but can definitely become a great keeper.
We've had a lot of wonky years with keepers for the NT, after Cillessen there's not really been a #1. Bijlow could've been but he's injured about 4 months a year and then there's a big cluster of not quite top but solid keepers and while Verbruggen is in that group now he's the youngest and the one who most looks like we can count on him for years to come.
In Euro 2021 we had to bring Stekelenburg, who was years past his prime and ending his career as a non-starter at Ajax, Tim Krul, who was the reserve keeper at Luton and Bizot, who barely didn't get relegated in France the season before. We were so cooked.
Tbf, Bizot WAS one of the main reasons Brest didn't go down (but he was still 3rd choice somehow)
Out of principle I would always start a goalkeeper that actually plays over one that doesn't, no matter where they are sitting on the bench. Don't understand why Bizot didn't start because he was the only one actually playing.
What? The whole Stekelenburg thing isn’t even true. He played the end of that season completely for us. Obviously past his prime but he was called up because he was playing and playing like a decent keeper. Maybe you forgot that Onana was banned??
I did indeed forget about that little bit where that Onana was banned before that Euros. But still, he played 21 in all comps for that season, which was also the first time he was a starter in years. It's insane that we were so in the mud that half a decent season gets you the starting spot for such a big footballing nation.
Iribar won the Euros in his debut for Spain in 1964. Just saying.
Edit: Poland scores as I write the post. Typical.
Could you not jinx us like that again, thanks.
He looks like Wirtz
Donnarumma was unlucky that the last Euros was postponed. He would have on this list too.
