Narcisse Manitoba. Haven't stopped in since I was a child, still an incredible experience.
And ONE lizard species. Pretty amazing when you actually see a prairie skink for the first time though, I straight up embarrassed my sister when we were hiking in Spruce Woods, I flipped a log and there were TWO skinks right there. Still a major highlight of my wildlife experiences.
I would also freak out! I found a baby hognose the last time I went there and I thought that was cool, but skinks are apparently even more elusive!
Oh my god, I spent YEARS looking for a hognose so I am so jealous!
We have family very close by but the timing just has not worked out for us before. I was so happy that we were still able to catch a few so late. I remember the whole pit being full when I was small.
If anyone is interested in why some random place in Manitoba has the largest concentration of snakes in the world, look up the National Geographic video on Narcisse!
Wow, thanks
Oh this is awesome! I want to go so bad. Its one trip I really want to make before I go home and meet Jesus ... lol.
When was this photo taken?
May 11th! That is really the last weekend worth going. There are actually so many more snakes at the peak times!
I can't even tell you how happy it makes me to see Narcisse pop up every spring and fall in this subreddit. I'm Manitoban born and raised and get so sick of people complaining it's boring there. It isn't if you actually get to know the unique experiences and places of our province, like the snake dens.
I feel you there! Too many people don't explore or even take the time to appreciate what is here. I have an album somewhere that is full of pictures of myself with random large statues around the province. Including the giant mosquito 😆
That's amazing! I used to cruise the back gravel roads all the time and came across so many cool abandoned buildings, train tracks/bridges, wildlife, a couple random plaques/statues. Lots of hidden gems. I hadn't found the giant mosquito yet though!
The interlake is a wonderful place to explore! Even has some wonderful rocky beaches that are isolated and full of wildlife. The clouds can be incredible over the prairies too. I make a point to take pictures of random hills, they look out of place in our great wide flat hah.
My mother took me there for my 6th birthday
We drove over 1100 miles to literally see snakes. It confused the hell out of the people at the border
The forbidden spaghetti
Is it an orgy?
Yes.
Its a snorgy
I’ve joined this group to help desensitize myself. I’m pretty scared of snakes and seeing all you post your photos and talk so cutesy about them helps. Believe it or not. But this photo here is stuff of nightmares. lol.
Idk if this'll help make it less scary but you're looking at a pic of a snake orgy
it’s just spaghetti
I love snakes but I also admit this is making me feel a bit squeamish lol. Though not so much because it's a lot of snakes, it just looks like some sort of big, weird alienesque-growth?
I would love to put my hand in there and feel all that scale
Indianna Jones has left the chat
You think you could scoop em all up and lie down with them on top of you like a living horny blanket
You have lost speech privileges
omg who are these lovelies?
edit: nevermind, you said above!
Danger noodle pasta 😵💫
they're just garter snakes lol
I know lolol, still pasta tho 🍜
Garder snakes are mildly venemous. Medically insignificant to humans. Was only just discovered a few years ago.
I wanna stick my hand in there so bad.
Fully aware it will come back covered in micro punctures and smelling of skunk fart.
definition of "it'll come back to bite you" haha
Noodle pile. Sooooo many kisses to be had!
Thats amazing.
I frequently have dreams about things like this. FREQUENTLY! No idea why.
My earbuds, after being in my pocket for 45 minutes
Only one time have I ever witnessed anything like this. It was so cool. In the base of a rotten tree in NY. There were so many garden snakes. Very cool looking.
For a sacrifice?
So, why don't predators take advantage of the mating ball?
Why did that remind of the snakes from Hunger Games Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
What a neat experience
Look at all those noodles wow
My garden hose the second after i touch it
Snakes… why did it have to be snakes.
Which one is your son?
I can smell this photo.
Made me instantly think of Indiana Jones
I never knew!!! Watching videos on this place TONIGHT!
Toss him in and run 🤷♂️
My nightmare
I prefer viewing snakes 1-at-a-time. Something about this triggers some sort of anxiety for me.
However, I am perfectly happy letting these snakes exist in their writhing clump-pile and observing from afar.
When I first went as a kid I was surprised how much it scared me. I caught garter snakes all the time on my bike at our farm, even kept a container full of soap handy to help them with any ticks. For some reason the sheer number terrified me at first, but after a few minutes I was fine. Does help that they don't seem to understand what biting is, worst thing you will get is peed on.
Whatever you do, do NOT trip and fall into that pile!
I guess if they all peed on you it would stink. I've been skunked though so not sure how that rates. They seriously do not bite. Zero brain cells.
Wow wow! That's a bunch of snakes.
How many are there? Aporoximately
Legless lizards
Indy… why does the floor move?
😍
Be careful garters often den with venomous snakes as well.
Ok, I LOVE snakes and have kept them as pets for years, but I can see how this could be terrifying if someone isn't a fan 🤣🤣 That is a mighty bundle of noodles!
HOW MUCH SNAKES?!?!?
Did it have a smell?
Grab one for me!! 😂
I wanna stick my hand in it. Would it be like a bowl of large wiggly spaghetti?
Sacrifice him to the snake gods!
Indiana Jones’ nightmare
☹️
Will they start biting if you grabbed a bunch. Don’t wanna disturb then but I wanna be bitten by lots of small snakes one day at once
Sounds like a kink, man.
What? No I just love snakes haha. Even their bites make me happy. Some littler snakes can be so cute a feisty
I mean, maybe (musking is more likely), although I wouldn’t disturb them breeding.

ORGY
I love Narcisse! I feel so lucky to live nearby, it's a pretty good consolation for having only four kinds of snakes in the province.
This was a good year to go. 2022 had virtually no snake viewing because of some bad flooding of the dens, and in 2023 they were still recovering so the population was pretty low. I was happy to see they've bounced back this year!
