The Adama Maneuver.
The Galactica Atmospheric jump is one my of all time favorite Sci-Fi scenes, and I have A LOT.
Putting another voice behind this.
By far one of the best moves in Sci History. So much action and Jeapardy - The best.
This. Still gives me the chills just thinking about it
That was an awesome scene.
Also Lee Adama in the Pegasus covering the escape of the Galactica. It was the first time I’d seen someone use the idea of flipping a ship upside down to let the other side take the damage. Which in a ship with artificial gravity makes total sense as it wouldn’t affect the people inside.
Everyone stands to salute Fat Lee.
So say we all.
The in atmo jump can’t be beat imo. But OP’s scene is one of a few high points in S2 that make it the best overall season of the show for sure.
One episode I like best only because it shows the writers were really thinking was the attack on the reincarnation ship. This is space, we don’t do swooping strafes, we just pivot the fighter sideways and pull the trigger as we fly along the length of the ship. Also, Starbuck reversing not with a swoop, but with thrusters to pivot the Viper around.
Yeah the dynamics of the dogfights were unmatched, especially the scene you mentioned. The Expanse space battles come fairly close for me, but there’s something about Starbuck pulling a crazy Viper move that gets me pumped.
Just started watching the expanse, and one thing I really love about the space battle is how boarding craft will just slam violently into the side of spacecraft cracking them open and allowing the boarders to spill out. In targets you don’t care about keeping intact that makes a lot of sense and I’ve never quite seen it depicted that way before.
Babylon 5 was great for this. The fighters in that show were straight up space superiority fighters. Multi-axis thrusters on four engine struts made those things nimble af. I wish they’d played a bigger part or got a spin off.
They spun off all the time, that's what the multi-axis thrusters were for ;)
"Well, this oughta be different..."
That clicking sound you kept hearing in the background during that episode?
That was Adama's balls as he walked around the CIC because they're made of polished steel.
I've never finished BSG. I've started it twice and just can't get through it.
But... watching this scene I want to start at the very beginning and try to make it through this time. Scenes like this are why I was SO EXCITED when this came out. When this series is on it's game, it's is amazing!
The first two seasons write a check the last two seasons cannot cover. I watched it when it was new and while I made it all the way thru, I was less than pleased with it several times during the last couple seasons.
In an ironic twist of possibly cosmic proportions, they needed an actual plan for the storyline instead of their, what appeared to be, winging it per season.
They were 'winging' it because between the SciFi channel threatening to cancel it every half season, the writer's strike happened in the middle of it's run. It's frankly incredible it turned out as good as it did even if some people find the last season disappointing.
Yeah, I'm not saying it would have been easy, but 10 years before that Babylon 5 coped with a premature cancelling and then a rebirth by having the entire shows storyline plotted out. Obviously the show wasn't unscathed and the last season is not as well remembered, but they dealt with an actual cancellation.
Hard disagree. BSG is one of the few shows that was amazing all the way through. And even though the final episode was controversial how they ended, and not my preference, I thought it was still satisfying.
The only thing that still irks me to this day is they chose the Luddite ending instead of Synthesis.
Starting a world where organic and "synthetic" lifeforms can live together would give hope for the future. To finally break the cycle.
But instead, the wheel kept turning. (But I guess that only matters to the people on the rim, 🌌🤠/🟫🥼)
I'm with you. And satisfying is the right word for the finale.
That's the problem with BSG, its highs are amazing but its lows are just... god, why? Like, you go from 33, this tension filled nonstop exploration of people under stress with really great human moments, right into water, a story whose premise is so laughably bad I can't take it seriously.
Just watched it again and I’ve got goosebumps! Such a great show until it wasn’t. I’ll never forgive them for what they did to my boy BSG!
Also notice they had the whomp when Galactica jumped out and the air immediately rushed in to replace the 120+ million cubic meters of air that just disappeared.
To this day the most exhilarating moment of TV I’ve ever seen. We had a whole living room full of people at my flat watching it and everyone was outta their seats.
Oh for sure. That scene was badass.
Falling like a rock!
Exactly. I remember yelling at the TV watching that scene and the enduring holy shit what did I just see feeling
Best scene in all of Sci-Fi? That's not even the best scene in Battlestar Galactica.
I would say it's not even the best scene where Adama and Cain are on the phone with each other. The scene after the battle where they each have an assassin on the other's bridge and speak with each other and then both call off their assassin beats this scene.
I honestly thought that was the scene in the post lol
Ringo isn’t even the best drummer in the Beatles
“Jesus, Archer, You’re not even the best spy in that room.”
DANGER ZONE!
Let me introduce you to a simple Cardassian Tailor.
Oh man, In the Pale Moonlight does beat this I think.
I can live with it. Computer. Erase personal log.
I love that he says it twice. Like he’s trying to convince himself.
I can live with it… can’t I
His comment on the story of the boy who cried wolf says everything about him!
Never tell the same lie twice.
If someone knows things are matter of perspective it is a guy who was a gardener taking care of poisonous flowers on Romulus.
Edward James Olmos made this show.
Without him, i don't think this show would have been even half as good. He literally picked this entire show and put it on his back. AMAZINGLY good fit for the role.
That's very kind of you.
Gods bless.
If you’re EJO, answer me this: Is Deckard a replicant?
You're EJO?
That’s Edward James Almost, the EJO impersonator
Judging by some of their post history, god I hope not.
Yup. He's an excellent actor, and a lot of other people have great roles, but he would definitely be the linchpin of the whole thing. Take him away, and it's just vanilla sci fi.
Agreed 100%
I remember watching this scene the first time, I was on the edge of my sit. Really one of my favorites of all time
The soundtrack is so good. Bear McCreary is a genius.
McCreary, Richter, Djawadi, & Shore... the 4 Horseman of the Soundtrack.
John Williams stands outside in the rain, looking sadly through the window.
I honestly feel like composing for TV and film are such different beasts. For a film score, the music really needs to follow a similar 3 act structure, where you don't want to give your main hook away too early, you want to have something to pull out in the 3rd act as the hero picks themselves up.
TV you need these sustained themes like in this scene. But they need to be able to be recycled. And you can't give each character their own motif like you can in film, because in most instances it would be too busy and get muddled.
I don't know, I'm probably wrong. But it just seems like there's a unique kind of genius for each media.
Being older GenX I'll say he definitely gets an honorable mention.
Add Guillaume David to that list. His music was sent to us from the 41st millennium via Warp cast.
Yeah he’s amazing. I remember playing God of War (2018 of course) and looking up who composed the score.
Wasn’t surprised it was him at all.
The episode where the Galactica allows itself to enter atmosphere, launch fighters while falling, and then FTL out, seconds before hitting the ground, was, hands down, the best sci-fi I have ever watched.
You’re not that guy is better 👌
Even for the praise The Expanse receives, I think the writing and Wes Chatham is underappreciated.
Amos has a low key fantastic character arc as he goes through the series learning how to person.
Some of the best lines too:
Avasalara: How do you know how to walk in pumps?
Amos: I didn't always work in space...
I think it's that scene that has a call back in another scene in a later episode...
Amos Burton : [Chrisjen pours drinks] What's this for?
Chrisjen Avasarala : For teaching me how to walk in magboots. It comes in handy, especially in this godforsaken place.
Amos Burton : [looks around the office] You and I have very different life experiences, Chrissie.
Chrisjen Avasarala : Don't call me that. I'm a member of Parliament, not your favourite stripper.
Amos Burton : You could be both...
I'm member of parliament, not your favorite stripper.
You could be both.
I always thought Wes Chatham made the show. He put the fine edge on a pretty great story line.
Bobby Draper and Avarsalla were really close seconds, but Amos was the consistent great part of the show.
The writing is phenomenal, given how much text they had to work with. Put together with an incredible cast (except Jim,l Holden, can't stand the character or the actor) and it's my favourite sci-fi ever alongside BSG. Amos and Chrisjen stole every scene they were in
Hmm...
B5: Delenn showing up with the Minbari fleet, just in time to save B5 from the Earth fleet.
I paraphrase: "The only human to defeat a Minbari ship is on the station behind me. You are in front me. Be somewhere else."
Earth fleet nopes out and is gone.
Off the top of my head:
Delenn: This is Delenn, of the Minbari. Babylon 5 is under our protection. Withdraw, or be destroyed.
Generic Earth Captain: Negative. We have authority here. Do not force us to engage your ships.
Delenn: Why not? Only one human captain has ever survived combat with a Minbari fleet. He is behind me. You are in front of me. If you value your lives, be somewhere else.
I especially love the way she says "Why not".
Londo Mollari vs. Antono Refa
You'll note the plural form. "Lines".
God I love the accent jurasik did for londo. He always had a gravitas even when he was the fool of a scene. Him getting swept away with war crimes was an amazing arc.
Vir... It took some time to pay off yet your instincts and prognostication turned out right. <kiss on the cheek>
God sent me.
It's good but I prefer "only one human captain has survived combat with Minbari. He is behind me. You are in front of me."
“If you value your lives, be somewhere else.”
RIP Mira Furlan.
That and when it's the future episode and she shows up to the talking heads! "Sheridan was a good man" "That's all you have to say!? You've come so far" "You've gone much farther to say less" Fucking stare down
A threat so good they open their own jump points to run away instead of going back through the jump gate that's right behind them
Got chills.
edit source
Severed Dreams was such an amazing episode.
-"Bring us in closer to the enemy."
-"How close?"
-"Right down their throats."
And I always get something in my eye when the dying Churchill rams one of the other destroyers.
Most of the CGI in the show aged terribly but at the time they were on the cutting edge.
I love her moment right before.
"Stand down!"
"Why?"
She packed such a punch in a single word. The levels of disdain were unheard of.
RIP.
I'd like to live just long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on a pike as a warning to the next ten generations that some favors come with too high a price. I would look up at your lifeless eyes and wave like this.
Can you and your associates arrange this for me, Mr. Morden?
This scene is great sure, but I submit “I am that guy” from the expanse for your consideration.
Amos is one of my all time favorite characters so complex.
Not to be like "but the book!" kinda person but the show doesn't do him justice. He's awesome in the show he's even better in the series imo
Books are always better because the character exists in your mind but Wes Chatham did an amazing job portraying the sociopath with a code archetype. He was chilling and terrifying and at the same time loyal and protective of his friends. Anytime he was on screen I was riveted.
Chatham was legit amazing as Amos. So much so that I think of book Amos and Chatham’s Amos as the same character. He embodied that role so well
The scene where he studies the people turned into pure sociopaths is brilliant. You can see he knows he’s off compared to normal people but not as far gone as the manufactured ones and he wants to figure out exactly where and how he fits.
He’s a completely different character almost, and I really love both. It’s like Bobbie Draper. So different in the book from the show but both great. I wasn’t sold on either character’s casting at first. Felt Amos should be older and heavier, and Bobbie should have been much bigger and meaner looking. But both actors did such a great job I changed my mind after watching them.
Well if we are going to talk Book vs Show differences let's not forget Camina Drummer on the show vs. Pa/Drummer/Bull in the book. Thing is I love Cara Gee's performance of Drummer in the show that I wouldn't change a think (plus it does streamline the story a bit for TV viewers).
Absolutely, that and the change to Ashford I think are still two of the best decisions the show made in regard to the book.
Yeah, we don't get Bull, and that kinda sucks. But we also get show Drummer who is a fantastic character.
And Ashford in the book is kind of a tale of one man breaking under pressure and becoming a villain despite his best intentions, but in the show it's a hauntingly beautiful and complex character that might be in my top 10 science fiction characters of all time list.
I know it is kind of lame, but I love the (spoilers) drummer/ashford video from zurik23m. its faster than a rewatch but hits a lot of the big moments
Maybe my favorite character from any book or series… the first time we get a chapter from his perspective I literally had an “oh shit, it’s happening! it’s happening!!” moment that I have yet to have from any other book or series.
Can you point me to the book you are referring to? I never realisd there was a book form of the show! (or the show is a form of the book?)
The books predate the show. There's 9 of them and they're excellent
I love how James Pinche Holden says “Amos will be the last man standing” and then we fast forward to him meeting the Linquist. God damn, one of the best characters ever written and Wes Chatham absolutely nails him in thw show.
"I didn't always work in space"
A fantastic character. Making his way through space, learning how to person.
My pick from the Expanse is the first time we get a real zero-g space battle when they're attacking Thoth station.
- Suits on
- Depressurizing the ship knowing full well it's going to get shot to hell.
- Bullets zipping through with trails of sparks hanging still in space only to 'fall' when they maneuver again.
Just everything about it is exceptionally cool.
For reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dn76ZPt_Y0
I'm not that far into the show, but i recognized the scene immediately from the books. That scene in the books hit hard too.
Amos scenes are just as good on the show as they were in the books. That had to be one of the best castings in the history of television.
You could have posted nothing more than "I am that guy" and won the thread.
God that scene is everything.
And it doesn't even have to be Sci fi.
My go to when I need a little Amos in my world
For me Ashford being the ghost knife is up there amongst the best scenes
I remember first time watching The Expanse barely paying attention to Amos early on thinking he was just your average expendable grunt.
Never have I been this wrong with a show.
I think it’s the episode “33”. It’s a high water mark the series struggled to match again.
That was the first episode.
Yes
Great scen. BUT..... Babylon 5 has at least 25 scenes which make the hair raise on your neck more than this.
The muted "fire, fire, fire" from Sheridan
The arrival of the white stars out of fucking nowhere
Sheridan nuking the shadow city
The earth fleet engagements and Agamemnon
The destruction of the shadows on Centaur prime
The Centauri bombardment of the Naan homeworld
And so on and so forth...
Fuck I need to watch this again
Let's not forget every other time Peter Jurasik and Andreas Katsulas are on screen at the same time.
Fuck me, what an absolute masterclass in character development and portrayal.
Delenn's "why not?" speech.
Sheridan's divorce in B5. Or when Londo finds out what Morden did on Centuari Prime and asks to be alone. I cheer/cried at them all.
"I am that guy" by Amos is up there, too. As is Naomi's jump. I didn't read the book and it got me!
Londo watching the orbital bombardment of Narn
Ivanova declaring she is "death incarnate"
Vir waving
Well i am a stargate guy so...
-Battle of Antarctica (everytime goosebumps)
-Battle at the Supergate
-Atlantis vs Super-Hive
-The Siege of Atlantis
(Battle of Asuras)
I can only assume you omitted "In the middle of my backswing‽" because it is just naturally assumed.
Was my first thought too 😂
Well op asked for a scene and the whole episode is just epic.... :D
Edit: the museum hostage situation as well XD
We're your - we're your captors! We're heavily armed. There's a - there's rules. There's a whole school of etiquette to this.
I love that through the entire run they were not afraid to swing wildly between taking itself seriously and not so much.
that groundhog day episode is so great.
The ongoing golf game.
Teal'c finally losing his cool and just dumpstering the guy that opened the door into his face each morning.
The realization Teal'c and Jack both have when Daniel stupidly mentions how cool it would be to never face any consequences.
Juggling!
I really gotta watch this show
It's a moral imperative as a science fiction television fan.
It depends on you definition of "better". I mean, even not moving to other franchises, when the 5 cylons start hearing All along the Watchtower in their mind until the end of the episode is a part (OK, it's not a single scene...) I rewatched many times.
Oh yeah I love that scene. But something about this scene always hits with me. The music, the utter “fuck it” attitude of Adama when he finds out they’re about to be executed…I mean he’s about to endanger the last remnants of humanity for his crew.
While the final five storyline was not great, Starbuck playing the piano in the bar in season four was a fucking amazing moment. One of my favorites in the show along with the OP’s scene, the Adama Maneuver, and Pegasus sacrificing itself for Galactica.
Oh, I hated that with a burning passion.
I loved it but the "resolution" to how it happened ended me. For a show packed with fighter pilots they definitely didn't stick the landing.
I always thought Lee Adama's speech at the trial of Gaius Baltar was the best scene in the series
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aV-iwiLJ4c8
but for all of Sci-Fi G'kar B5
That is an amazing scene. B5 is a masterpiece
That courtroom speech really is spectacular. BSG really makes you feel that civilizational level conflict. It’s not all about the fighting it’s the aftermath, it’s what we do and how we do it in peace time, too. It’s what even is justice.
Bear McCreary put out some absolutely incredible music for this show
I want to be clear here: I love Adama. I LOVE Adama.
That said, I don't think anything in that series tops, "My name is Saul Tigh. I am an officer in the colonial fleet..."
It’s a good scene, but greatest? Come on. It’s not even the best scene in that series.
The top 5 scenes in SciFi all come from Spaceballs, but this is certainly a top 10 moment.
This is the best scene in any sci-fi franchise
Exactly what I was thinking. Was surprised not more people talked about it even when it was released.
"Morphius is fighting Neo"
The elevator scene
Never seen this show before, but that soundtrack is lit.
Starbuck in her old apartment is how I discovered Philip Glass.
Bear McCreary is the man. He scored the new God of War games too.
I'm going old school for a moment...
Battlestar Galactica (1978): "Saga of a Star World"
- Apollo having to leave his little brother, Zac, behind while turbo'ing back to the battlestar armistice fleet
- Zac's Viper with two functional engines is being overtaken by Cylons...
(Galactica bridge)
ADAMA
Mr. President--
TIGH
Commander, one of our patrol ships is under attack from the main force approaching the fleet.
ADAMA
Mr. President, your “welcoming committee” is firing at our patrol!
(Atlantia bridge)
ADAR
Baltar? Baltar?
(In his wounded Viper, Zac sights the fleet.)
ZAC
(sighs)
Made it!
(comes under heavy fire)
Patrol to fleet! Patrol to fleet! I need help!
\* Zac's Viper is destroyed by Cylon Raiders ***
(Galactica bridge)
ADAR (on screen)
What was that?
ADAMA
That was my son, Mr. President.
This is up there with: "His was the most {voice cracks} human!" from Kirk at Spock's funeral
Michelle Forbes is 5'9" of watchability.
Ice cold here, and so fine.
"I am that guy."
I agree it is a top moment, but I hate just picking one or ordering them, so my list is these for a start... I am assuming you mean mostly action moments, (leaving out some others mentioned a lot in the rest of the thread and also omitting anime, that would be a whole separate post):
Serenity:

I would add Serenity - Somebody fire!
Commander, why are you launching your Vipers?
IM GETTING MY MEN
I don't know, I'm quite fond of this one.
Hotdog: “Well… this outta be different”
Oh yeah the adama maneuver is an amazing scene
I enjoyed BG for the most part, but it suffered from the strike, and it wrapped up like someone wanted to flush a smelly turd down the toilet.
Limitng myself to BSG only, then IMHO, Adama Manouvre takes the cake, shortly followed by Kara's return (I may be misremembering things, but her return was accompanied by a jawdropping scene showing entire fleet).
That scene with the confusion and suspense about the single raider is great.
I think the Adam Maneuver wins hands-down. However, this is my second favorite scene of the series. We never truly see her resolve until this moment and it is beautiful. I’m Coming For You!!!
IMHO: yes; there are. For example:
B5: Ivanova: "Ivanova is god" scene"
B5: Ivanova: the "boom-shika-boom" scene
ST-WoK: Khan quoting Milton
Galaxy Quest; Tawny: "This scence was not well written!" Also, the bleeped out: Fuck This! Also many of Guy's lines.
So very , VERY many more.
I don't think so.
So say we all
Is that the girl in the opening who ended up in that sex cult with the Smallville girl ?
The whole show was excellent, because of situations like this. Some people complained that it was "too political", but it was 100% accurate to the types of situations they'd come up against, and politics, like it or not, would be a huge part of that, I LOVED how relatable it was, and how well it was mirroring the exact discussions we were having regarding war at the time.
I remember people calling it "Battlestar Iraqtica." Kinda thought it was a good pun.
Yes. When Amos says “I am that guy” in the Expanse.
I thought they hooked me with galactica. The first episode i saw was “ 33 minutes “. I thought, Damn, i gotta at h this - and started the showfrom the beginning. They lost me by the 4th episode. So, i can’t agree (or disagree) on the scene. I will submit other scenes, River Tam kicking reaver ass. The scene where “the thing’s” chest opens. the first time we see Alien. when fred kwan teleports the rock monster into the engine room. The list goes on.
EJO is so great as Adama
Fucking dogshit ending to a good show still hurts me to this day
This was really intense and ended as a great cliffhanger
Only 33 and Exodus has it beat for me
That “other” Pegasus scene beats this by a long shot.
I'm fuckin dizzy
God this show is SO GOOD
I love how this futuristic show’s chosen image has two people talking on chorded telephones ☎️
Well, that was specifically because the wireless stuff all got hacked by cylons
Using single sideband AM radio is what causes the distortion in their voices. Always seemed like a nice bit of paying attention to the details.
I love this show. My favorite might be the opening scene to the Mini series when we see Cylons and Six for the first time. Six says to the human “are you alive”, plants a big wet kiss on him and the outpost blows up.
I realized I waited too long to get into this series, The battle... the music... the acting... all amazing
All right, time for a rewatch
My favourite scene in any scifi is in Consider Phlebas where this happens:
"Gridfire struck the Orbital"
Vastly advanced technology operating on a vast scale.
Personally i like this scene from Babylon 5 the most from all scifi
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kv3t86imsDI&ab_channel=TheRelay-Sci-Fi
Man that scene still gets me pumped
There .must be some way out of here.
Man that was a Hell of a season ender.
So many best scenes in Star Wreck, In the Pirkinning.
Also: Iron Sky
That whole show is gold. This makes me want to rewatch it.
The first time we see Destiny recharging in a star! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhAYMnLso2k
The Minbari coming in for the ultimate assist! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtNtw2HTFtA
I loved that scene. “I’m GETTING my men.” /slams handset/
Me, looking at this title, "That's a preposterous claim!"
Me, having rewatched the link for the thousandth time, "Yeah, that's fair enough."
Admiral, this will spiral out of control fast
Great scene, but Pegasus is not a leaf on the wind..
Ronald D. Moore who led DS9 for 6 years created this master piece, Adama is Sisko on super Roids..best SCI I have seen in 30 years, and I watched the original when it aired in the 70's as a child..what a freaking show this was. Still is!
best scene is when they call off their respective assassination plans
Ensign Ro!
Yeah, the next episode where the blow up the resurrection ship.
Absolutely love it, the music by Bear, the panning camera shots of the CIC, add the simmering build up to the scene where it was clear these two would come to blows
Many. There are many better scenes in several sci-fi franchises.
But this one is for sure awesome and deserves to be on any list of best scenes.
It's great, but there are many of them. BSG jumping into the atmosphere and then the vipers launching has to be one of the greatest sci-fi scenes ever.
