What do you love most about Sarasota?
Local Questions ie whats up with thatI completely agree. The food options, proximity to beaches, culture, trails, kayaking, fishing…I can go on and on.
The food sucks in this town lol
Yeah but you have a few restaurants that you can only find in Sarasota that kinda balance it out.
I’m not sure why valid and honest comments get nailed to the wall in forums like this, that’s a completely honest opinion, I’m a chef, from Nashville and expected the food scene in south Florida to be a really vibrant and colorful array of South American mixed with modern Americana and it’s just pathetic. Every restaurant I’ve been to or thought about working for are cookie cutter frozen to table Sysco garbage and all the chefs here steal their menus from the other half assed chefs in town.
Oh you got Buffalo cauliflower yee fuckin haw is that the only thing you can do with it?
Oh you have that really rustic traditional dish Cacio e Pepe? Whew hoo glad you found that off your competitors menu now you can charge $26 for a plate of burnt butter and pepper 🤢
Oh Calabrian chili wings, hmmm so eclectic, where did you come up with such an outstanding name for such a dish that’s been making hot sauce from hot peppers for the last 60 years 🙄
I don't know what people expect from a demographic consisting of older folks who are losing their taste buffs almost as fast as their ability to smell.
They are there, you just have to look for them. Mi Sitio is a really good little Colombian spot. There are some nice little deli’s and diners down on Beneva. Not everything is terrible.
Move
Couldn’t agree more. Lived there for years. Never found anywhere where I’d say the food was good. Some was more edible than others, but never good.
Don’t give jewels away like that
If this sub was one large collusion to dissuade people from moving here by being hyper critical that would be hilarious and fun.
I’m on multiple city Reddit threads (I’ve lived in multiple cities since being on Reddit) people always use them to rag on their cities. It’s mostly horse shit. Except the Miami sub. That city deserves most of the hate it gets.
I have BEEN wanting to live there bc of the beaches and art districts.
Sarasota has more arts organizations per capita than NYC does. It's pretty cool in a town that I still consider "small".
In the north east fresh strawberries are $7 🤨🤨🤨
Nothing like nice beach beaches
Went to Shore on LBK to celebrate my 30th wedding anniversary last night. We sat right by the water and I felt such pleasure with the view; live-aboard sailboats, birds, water and no tall buildings anywhere in sight. I love the wildlife here and how the plants and trees are every shade of green, but on steroids. Stephen King was right when he said Sarasota was sweet and funky and that's why he moved here.
Shore is excellent. We also love Brine in Gulf Gate…best Jumbo Lump Crab cakes in town.
Definitely Detwilers
What gave it away? The sign saying welcome to detwilers lol
Not during season though. It's a grocery store, not a tourist attraction (I know Henry likes it both ways though)
Love this place. I appreciate them wanting to be closed on Sunday, but it is often the only day I am available to drive down there. Wish they'd open a store in Tampa.
I have nothing against most of the food detwilers sells, however I’m curious how you’ve fared with their fresh produce. I’ll never buy produce there again, the 4-5 times I’ve done so it goes bad in <2 days. I can’t eat 3-4lbs of fruit/veggies in literally one day, so I have to pass buying their produce.
The produce they will be honest about if it’s already ripe or close to being bad. But trust me the meat and seafood I wouldn’t buy
Bummer Hob Nob officially shut it's doors. El Adobe and Café Bacci are a couple more gems long gone now. Being replaced by stupid franchises and wannabe hole-in-the-wall restaurants.
I hope everyone In Sarasota is doing well
At the eye doctor rn then I’m gonna go bowling with some friends!
Damn, you take your bowling very seriously 🤣
Hahaha I’m not at the eye doctor because of bowling silly guy😂😂
Obviously, you're not a golfer..
Mind if I ask where you go bowling? Bowling was my favorite party activity then sport when I lived in CO, but since I moved to Sarasota 2 years ago I havent gone bowling once! Im looking for somewhere not-horrible to bowl if you have any suggestions!
AMF is a good one
Or Sarasota lanes
I love the people there.. the vibe.. Sarasota was one of my favorite spots on the west coast. I liked St. Petersburg there but the apartment prices even rival palm beach.
it's not it's getting worse here, born and raised, cost of living is impossible and traffic is so much worse
Yeah idk how any of you still live there. When I go back it’s awful.
My rent doubled and I had to move. I miss the beach. Good luck to you.

They do not look fresh as advertised
That’s because they were picked in California weeks ago.
This is what quality juices are made of and everybody’s like ewwwww look at it, and then they buy Tropicana on the way out instead 😂😂😂
Really? That’s a shame considering Plant City is right there with its amazing strawberries.
Plant City strawberries are over for the season. Too hot to grow now.
You're right they're amazing but they're winter strawberries! Gotta get on that one early
That’s a horse of a different color
That’s what I noticed. I have strawberry fields within a mile of me and I can’t get them this cheap
Detweillers is the Ollies of the grocery game. Compared to Publix it’s a step up.
I’ve never had great luck with produce from the one on Clark, to be honest.
Not sure how this sub appeared in my feed, but these cartons are going for about $9 in the northeast. People will still buy them at that price.
Anna’s (Surfer for the Beach, Liverwurst with Onion for home), Corkscrew (get the Paisano & Caribbean & Texan), A’s Giant Sandwiches, Wings & Weinies (RIP), Hooters for the OG ownership of the Brand. Man I miss home!
Ive worked at this Detwilers since we’ve opened and since COVID we’ve really taken off. Def the season causes it to be extremely busy and it’s starting to pay off with the new warehouse just north of Tampa Bay. In the next few years I’d expect it to grow more than just a store a year, and it will always be true that the prices will be less than Publix (former employee there too). At this point Detwilers should just own the whole plaza, it gets insane here!
Yoders, the food and market they have is delicious. I normally always leave with a Amish pie.
It should be illegal to leave Yoder's without getting a pie, best pies I've ever had
🤫🤫 don’t tell everyone about it. That’s a gem of a place!
We drive down from Disney area to eat at Yoders and go to Detwilers. 🌞
Shoofly pie!
The trolley. It's fun, free (+tip) and takes you pretty much everywhere you could want to go. Also the beaches are clean and have the perfect amount of wave, and there's occasional sharks (I love sharks lol).
We just vacation in Sarasota for now, but my husband and I are heavily considering moving down when we retire, or at least buying a condo and snowbirding.
Caspersen. The coolest beach in all of Florida. Ive gotten megalodon, mammoth, camel, horse, etc teeth from caspersen. :)
I used to love that we were such a well-kept secret.
Everything about Sarasota makes me feel like it’s my home forever. The people, the weather, the views, the wildlife, the fauna, the street life. Everything about life has improved since I moved here.
My best friend
Interesting shirt…
Available to all who visit Sarasota?
The Palm Deli has amazing pastrami and potato salad. That's pretty much the only reason I go there.
This and Walt’s
I can’t believe people hate Sarasota, it’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.
I dont think people hate the place. I think the majority of locals are fed up that it's no longer affordable or tenable unless you're making large amounts of money, then on top of that the beaches are trashed consistently by tourists playing not my town and original homes on decent size lots are being torn down for mcmansions that no locals can afford to live in. I love my town, and I love the location, the sunsets and what's left of its originality. I just hate what it's becoming.
I think my favorite part is that my butter is always soft when I leave it on the counter. Trying to spread cold, hard butter on my toast just sucks.
Something strange happened to me in Sarasota. A few weeks before I got there I had a dream about a girl I worked with years ago in NY whom I hadn't even thought about in years. I went to a bar in Sarasota and she was the bartender, I was so shocked to see her after she appeared in my dream that I never said anything to her, and she didn't recognize me.
Another day I went to Siesta Key and had to park a mile away from the beach and walk in carrying all my stuff, never again, but Sarasota is a pretty location.
We never go to Siesta key. So many more hidden gem beaches that are even better. But the sand in Siesta is unbeatable.
Sarasota just makes me feel so comforted, spent many spring breaks in Sarasota and longboat key. Just thinking about it makes me feel so comforted❤️ my ex and his family had a timeshare there and we would go every year back in highschool , and my bestfriends grandma lives in longboat and I have so many good memories there ! I loved going to st Armand’s circle and being able to walk to the calm relaxing beach during the sunset and see dolphins off in the distance, and the cute statue of the couple dancing along with the big buildings right along the beach😊
Myakka State Park and the Carlton Reserve! Also, the Trump -maga crowd will die off and normalcy will return; that and the rent gouging is not sustainable; that’s what I believe. I miss my hometown.
The Caribbean crazy ants that infest your outdoor electrical boxes and burn your house down?
Snowbird traffic is THE BEST 🙄 Thank GOD that’s over for a few months. But seriously, Detwilers is a SCORE!
Probably the crazy number of things to do here, many of which you can’t easily do anywhere else.
I know that is not a Publix! lol
Did the giant Detwilers sign tip you off?
Funny.
I guess I should have added the /s?
I just came from shopping at Walmart and I could've saved 5 dollars looking at this. I wonder if they were carrying green grapes or raspberries at detwillers I always have heard fond things about them. I just can't get there myself.
Yes and yes and for much less than you pay for those at Walmart.
Most produce at Detweilers is so fresh it will stay good for 2 weeks (sometimes longer) at home.
I often wonder if Walmart us selling the produce that Detweilers discards as too old...
Seriously 1.79 (or thereabouts)large head of fresh Romaine at Detweilers or the limp, wilted, dying tiny head of romaine at Walmart for around the same price if it is even in stock.
I have left Detweilers with a half full cart of fresh produce for $60.
Just like anywhere the Raspberries and Blackberries have to be consumed fairly quickly. The difference is they are less expensive and you aren't going to get home to find the bottom half of the container pre spoiled (like walmart).

Warm soft breezes
Nice parks and beaches.
The beach.
I live in Polk county but worked in Sarasota for a while. It was a long drive but really loved going there back way that ended up coming out through Arcadia and eventually a national forest I believe. The random wildlife I would see along the way was great. What I miss most is the wide selection of types of food. Especially Yoders which is always great.
Yoders....🌞🌞🌞
Love Sarasota and Detwilers!
Shark teeth hunting
As someone in Orlando, i wanna live in sarasota :(
The Macho Man is from there
Ten Thousand Years As Intercontinental Champion, Oooooh Yeeeah!
Hmmm, 🤔 I grew up in Sarasota county, and to be totally honest, I mainly just commute to work in Sarasota. Not a big fan of the crowds or the traffic. I suppose the beaches and sunsets are nice, but I only go there on occasion. It’s not as hectic as a big city like Tampa so that’s a plus. Ok I’ll say one other nice thing, Sarasota does have some nice and unique restaurants I will admit that.
The legacy trail is pretty dope.
Dry Dock restaurant
Gotta be the food. So many great local restaurants! I also appreciate the wildlife a lot. Wish they would stop the over developing...
Siesta Key is a gem!
It's neighbor, Venice.
Manatee
Siesta Key
The bay/gulf and the wildlife for sure and, honestly, I love the hate in here. Being by the water and watching for dolphins brings me the peace I'm missing living in the worst city I've ever lived in and seeing that others hate it here too is nice!
Not sure it's technically Sarasota, but I really like St. Armands Circle 😊
Anti desantis enclave
TropicalHitler
DesantisDestroysFlorida
Was just at the Bradenton one earlier today. Had to pass a Publix, an Aldi and a Walmart to get there.
The Bradenton one is really good. Ellenton is still the best one in my mind
The shakes are worth the visit and the Cuban sandwiches are really good. As are the baked goods.
The ice cream is LEGEND. When we first moved here, in a rented air bnb, I must have had 4 to 6 different flavors in that fridge at all times. Chocolate brownie....cookie dough....the blue monster flavor....OH shit birthday cake!! Detwilers is amazeballs
Think we also got Halloween pumpkins for the kids for almost next to nothing. Detwilers rules
Stopped by there yesterday for a scoop of Kahlua Chip. It's a nice way to relax for 10 minutes and people-watch!
Access to beautiful beaches and a downtown scene.
The weather, parks, and grid city planning.
Well we flew in a few days ago and what I love the most are the people we met and the beaches we visited - about a dozen so far from Ft Meyers to Anna Maria Island.
Detwiller looks like Stew Leonard and Ollies had a baby! 🙂
Yes!!!! 🙌
GEIER'S
Open again?
Grab it and make fruit leather
Hey those berries were picked down my street!
I now live on strawberries. That's how i'd feel about this.
good prices on fresh fruit
I live in California and each of those clamshells are easily $4.
And the funny part is they are grown in the state.
Wow, it really shows your age, reading these comments. It’s all good, older folks are crazy over their food. In south Florida. Those older folks will fight you for cheap food. Just living in the moment, for food. Got to love it
I am the 13th generation that decided NOT to spend my life there.
Wow look at those prices, heavenly
TWO FOR A DOLLAR
Someone would find me in a corner covered in strawberry carnage. I could not stop myself.
The only store to shop in, but those fruits and veggies need to be used within like two days!
Fresh berries? No, 2 for 1$
Hell yeah great deals on the freshest strawberries and super short cut off jeans weekend 😎
Apparently that they don't like blueberries and are leaving them all for me.
Detwillers is amazing. Love the ginger snaps they sell, and great prices and selections on meat/seafood
Two for 1$ strawberries?!???!
The fact that it's so easy to get a job here
I love that it's on the other side of the bridge and I never have to go there and deal with the trumpsters
I love the fact that I can ride my bicycle anywhere and it’s always a nice ride. It’s terrifying cause I nearly get hurt just about every time I do ride, but I suppose that’s just part of it and to be expected. I’m still fairly new to Florida, and I’ll be completely honest I kinda have a theory that northern and Midwestern folks who hate themselves and hate life too but are too lazy to off themselves move here so they can say least be miserable in a tropical environment. I came here to help a sister out that is going through some tough times, and pretty much hope she gets her shit together before I turn into a Floridian cause there’s really not a whole lot of social interaction here that’s very interesting or positive.
My parents
I love the fact that The Macho Man Randy Savage was billed from Sarasota.
The people are friendly
MVP rides
Awww so cheap… awwww me want
2 for $1….Wow those are $4-5 a container in my area…

Peachy's donut truck!!!!
That I don’t live there!
Why post in this sub then?
💯
ngl im struggling to think of anything i really care that much about here
Yeah, when I’m just floating in Sarasota bay watching the sunset while dolphins frolic all around me, I just get filled with rage at how this place sucks.
U sound fun
its literally just an opinion lol, shockingly i dont have to like sarasota that much because there isnt that much for someone my age to do, i plan on moving to a nice city when i have enough money

If everywhere you go smells like shit, it’s probably on the bottom of your shoe
yeah it fucking sucks a lot of the time. valid
ya idk why people are getting mad over an opinion, i grew up here and can say its really not that nice, there isnt much to do for someone my age
I miss this store and the lil pine tree beach spots past st.Armand’s cir other than that there’s really not much going on. I feel you a group in Florida for 20 years live in various places all over Florida. Yeah Sarasota is pretty but there’s no economy and there’s no way anybody in their 20s can afford a house there I moved across the country now I make $40 an hour in a state with a thriving economy in the career field that I chose back in Florida. I was making $18 an hour and they were guys that were working 26 years in the fuel that were making $20 an hour so really underpaid severely lacking economy all based on tourism there’s some fun music, events and stuff out there but outside of that there’s not really any trails to go hiking on the humidity fucking sucks all over the state. The nature is not that pretty like if you try to go to any of the forest, the only lake state or national park, they really is Ocala or the Everglades and in Ocala Forest do you have Methhead rednecks that run through the woods like crazy and you have high rates of disappearance out there you got rabid monkeys out there that escaped from the old Tarzan movie set that travel in swarms and fuck up your campsites. And then, if you go to the Everglades, you get risk being eaten by cougars or big ol scaley swamp puppies.
In boca you can get eaten by cougars also. Don’t say you weren’t warned.
I moved far away for that and many aforementioned reasons, lol!
I grew up here too and I could talk shit about this city all damn day 🤪

Not living there…
Glad not to have you. 👍🏻
Not living in Sarasota?
Produce prices made possible by immigrant labor
The thing that I love most about Sarasota is that I don’t live there anymore.
Nothing can make me love Sarasota.
Way too many people with too few roads in or out leads to shitloads of traffic leads to aggravation leads to a bad opinion.
When I pass it on the highway!
The Art School!
I just live on the outskirts of the city limits today I heard on the radio the country office has voted to NOT LIGHT UP SKYWAY BRIDGEin the mth of June anymore more be cause of 1 narrow mined COUNTY man office voted no it it's a dam shame I been over and back at nite when this was a very beautiful seen at dark 😢
Where are the people? You would not be able to take that picture in Venice for all the people shoved in that store.
It isn’t the city…
St Armands Circle/Ringling Museum♡♡♡
Hoes
Florida grows fresh strawberries in may? That’s wild we won’t get them until early July in NY
They actually grow them from about December/January to April or early May, depending on how hot it has gotten. Plant City, Florida strawberries are very popular around Florida.
Yeah you guys are lucky, you can also get the type that are organic and tasty but only last a couple of days. The ones we find in the supermarket here just taste like water.
Sarasota rocks!, but don’t tell anyone.
Macho man was billed from there
Those are them ones that were recalled because of bacteria listeria
Super Fresh = mold tomorrow
Wash them with vinegar and baking soda then dry them and put in a glass container. Will last a week at least.
5.99 in Boston. Each
People love to rag on Sarasota here but I find it a great place to live. Love the proximity to some of the beach beaches in the U.S., find the downtown very walkable, a nice arts scene, plenty to do with it still feeling like a cozy town.
