Kite Hill. Nowish.
Can’t believe OP doesn’t have the decency to pick up after it either 💩
It's an outdoor dog, barely have to feed her.
Mfer posing for you lol
CAN I PET THAT DAWGGGGG
Yes, we see them daily in SF these days, sometimes multiple times.
Do you like the coyotes? Instead of standing near them, taking a picture clap loudly or yell, scare them.
This could save their life, think about it. It's what we do with deer population growth in urban areas. We want these beautiful creatures as scared of humans as possible. Edit: fixed spellin
I feel like COVID gave the Coyote population a chance to grow while the humans all sheltered inside
That was actually me and friends in coyote costumes wandering around town doing coyote things.
They definitely learned to stroll streets more freely during COVID. I see them more often closer to dusk but increasingly in broad daylight as well, as they get more familiar. This is very bad for them.. and possibly us, if we have small pets or kids.
A Ranger on Mt. Tam said a coyote was running with a family mountain biking recently on a trail and it worried the hell out of them because it may be playing, then a hunting response could be triggered with little kids. Human contact can be a death sentence for them if they get too familiar this way.
Nah, we just started noticing them more. Population has been pretty stable: https://www.sfgate.com/local/article/urban-coyote-diets-san-francisco-18703009.php
Yes!! It's important to haze coyotes. Maintaining their healthy fear of humans is what keeps both us and them safe.
Thanks for this!! Tough love, we need to do this.
It's honestly difficult in the moment, have crossed paths with them and we're both stopped, eyes locked. If we love them, best to scare them in that exact moment you are admiring them, act threatening and big like a mama bear finally chasing her pups away.
Yea not good to condition them to be closer to people
Are coyotes regularly seen in SF? I did two weeks in AZ two weeks ago and was heartbroken to not see one. I’m going to SF this weekend and will cancel all plans to find one somewhere
Go to Point Reyes National Seashore. Super easy to see them.
Yeah they seem to be doing really well in the city. I love seeing them. They eat rats!
It’s regular but not common in the sense that you have a high chance of seeing one at any given time. More like if you regularly go to coyote places you will see several per year. In other words, don’t get your hopes up too high.
Anyway they are pretty much scraggly dogs. They have wolves at the Oakland zoo but it’s also not guaranteed they are visible in the enclosure
Visit parks in the morning for coyote sightings. Especially golden gate perk and Buena vista
Glen Canyon Park is also a reliable bet!
Had to about-face with my little dog this morning in the canyon! Luckily the coyote spotted us but stayed watching the walkers on the canyon floor.
I've seen a couple at Lands End in the morning too
This Momma is looking for food for her babies. Her teets are swollen from nursing.
Cruise golden gate park, presidio, and around Lake Merced between 5am and 7am. You will see Hella trash pandas and probably some Coyotes. Also there was an active coyote den by one of the lakes in Golden Gate Park. Sorry, I can't remember which one, though. Someone on here posted really good pictures a couple of months ago
If you hike up Bernal Heights Park you can almost always see them if it's not full of people. They even get quite near dogs now.
Bernal doesn't have a lot of vegetation and you have a high vantage point from the top of the park hence it's easier to spot them. They are in Buena Vista too but there's too much trees and in GG but it's flat.
Bernal Heights
They often walk right down the middle of the street while the sun is still up. The parks are also full of them.
I saw one trotting in 19th Ave by Stern Grove the other day, causing a giant traffic backup. Dude did not give a shit.
Yes they have always been here but since the pandemic shut down years ago there have been a lot more sightings practically everywhere in the city. Even downtown. One ran across the street in front of my car about a year ago in the western addition area.
I see them most often in Golden Gate Park around dusk. But not every time I’m in the park. Also see them occasionally in residential neighborhoods.
You ain't San Franciscan until you see a heron eat a gopher.
You aren’t a real San Franciscan unless you were parked up late night smoking and you see a coyote fuck up a raccoon digging in the trash 😂😂
The coyote won? My money would have been on the raccoon. They’re like little methed-out Bruce Lees.
Near their territories/foraging grounds yeah, i see at least one not quite every evening but several times a week now.
you need to be up around dawn in the more rural areas - like in the presidio. you can also hear them howling in the evening. I feel like they are always out and about when we have a big weather shift - like it got really hot last week and now it's cold again, so I see more, but happens vice versa too! Good luck!
Was stalked by one on Bernal Hill for around 25 minutes last month. I also see them in Glen Park and McLaren Park and sometimes just walking down residential streets. They come out most often at dawn and dusk.
They hang out in places where there are a lot of trees like Golden Gate Park, McLaren Park, coit Tower, legion of Honor, twin peaks, however recently I have started seeing them in Chinatown.
NorthBeach San Francisco down on Columbus street and up by Lombard. They actually have a place they sleep at in the old Art Institue School on Jones Street.
This one is gorgeous. I know I'm not supposed to pet them. ...but knowing may not be enough.
How is the City's rabies vaccine supply?
Omggg it’s posing
Used to live just down the street from kite hill, across from the slides. I’d recognize the view of those hills anywhere. Thank you for the beautiful picture and making me feel for a second like I was back home.
What a cutie!
Good info on SF coyotes at COYOTE YIPS: https://coyoteyipps.com/
Just changed out of his ACME rocket skates and ditched his giant magnet I see.
How dangerous are they to humans? Will they attack randomly? Do they have rabies? I think I saw one a couple of weeks ago not too far from my car. Thought it was a dog at first.
Typically no danger to humans. Sure, if it’s starving or rabid it could attack, but there’s probably enough food around and rabid ones will get caught pretty quickly. Worry more about small pets
Unless cornered they’re not dangerous to humans. They’re looking for small prey, mice, bunnies, cats, little dogs…. They’ll generally avoid humans, although are much more brave than ones in suburbs.
I’ve seen you around with your dog. I’ll say “hi” next time. Really looking forward to yelling “buttholerespecter” across the street.
Thanks for the responses everyone. That makes me feel at ease. I haven't seen it since the initial sighting but I was just curious in case there is next time.
I run through the park at night. If a coyote is in my path I can just clap my hands loud they'll take off running
Keep them away from your 🐈⬛cats🐈
Corona heights?
Close. Kite hill
Great photo.
Thanks I had a good subject
lol, you can see my old house in that picture. Spent lots of time there walking my dogs. Saw a couple coyotes just walking around there. Have a picture somewhere of one loping down Yukon street.
Saw one this morning too, but down in Daly City. He was pouncing on some kind of animal/ nest, but the brush was too thick to see if he got it.
This was a mom and she was succeeding in her hunts
What a beautiful pic! Totally suitable for framing.
Born and raised.
Nothing more beautiful than nature❤️
Balboa Park, along the bart and 280 fencing at and around the police station. Morning, they hunt the baseball fields in the dark, hoping to catch a bird looking for grubs. I like to go out there with my super bright flashlight and see the eyes glowing in the dark.
There are now thousands of them I. The city of Chicago. Really mostly harmless
‘Y’all got any chickens?’
Female no? The teets. She is on rodent patrol.
Exactly
Yeah, looks like a mama to me.
You got pics of one or both? Both ran just past me last week , they were trotting down the middle of Divisadero, good thing they missed seeing BudE peeing in the neighbors rose bushes… I freeakn froze… those two are bigger than full grown German Shepherd dogs…
This was a solo mama from what I could see
Is that Glenn Canyon?
Or Corona Heights?
Kite hill in eureeka valley
Great Photo… the two that are trotting around Duboce Triangle down to Hayes Valley are both bigger than German Shepherds …
They’re looking for your pet cat or dog to be their Pupps food
One time when I was homeless ìn sf, one of these woke me up in gg Park by licking my face
They are veey intimidating
Looking for a nice pet to eat
She’s Pretty
Kind coyote
Just had my first sighting on sunday!
That's a very healthy looking coyote, thata good.
Next to the Bison paddock, I thought I saw an empty box with the word ACME printed on the side.
If not friend…
Healthy looking Yote! It let you get pretty close eh?
I’m non threatening
Get my good side, Carol.
I live in TN, those guys have been known to attack people and kill pets and other farm animals here. We shoot them on sight lol
So pretty!!
Cool. I'm glad it wasn't a shot of your chewed off arm wedged under an exceptionally unfortunate looking lady. That would suck to see.... wait... scratch that. That would be pretty gangster if you did that and we're relaxed enough to think about snapping a photo to help explain to your friends and colleagues what happened to that arm you had last week and don't have today.
I’d much rather get attacked by a coyote than most large dogs
This
You're more likely to be hit by lightning than attacked by a coyote lol
In the event someone didn't get that reference...
The term coyote ugly has existed since at least 1984 as a joke to refer to an ugly one-night-stand partner. The definitive origin of the term is unknown, but popular etymology suggests that it drew inspiration from actual coyotes, as they tend to be so desperate to escape from traps that they chew their own limbs off so as to not wake her and deal with that aftermath.
Buddy, put your dog on a leash for goodness sakes.
