Retropie built in a NES cartridge
[Modding]Me too. LAST CHANCE. I WARNED YOU
My store has a copy in box. Not even in a display case because it's only worth a few bucks.
Every answer is a weapon
right lol i was just gonna post that.
Came here to say this.
I will thank you. What size memory card did you use?
32GB. I think that's overkill, I've never come close to filling it, but I figured I may as well.
Not filling up a large sd card makes it last longer as it can move data out of dead sectors morely
I didn't know that! Thanks for teaching me something today.
Cards have limited writes and a larger card will allow it to spread the writes out over all the open space. I wouldn’t go get a 400GB card and toss 16GB on it but 32GB cards are cheap now so 16-20GB of ROMs and the rest for saves, updates, caches etc will mean that card will last for years. By the time it starts to have issues a 32GB card will be a nickel.
I run into issues with my dash cam. A small card runs into issues after like 6months so now have a larger card in it.
I learned something here too. Since 32gb MicroSD cards are fairly inexpensive, I picked one up for a Pi project that didn’t really need that extra capacity. Good to know there was a benefit to it after all!
That’s only true if you’re doing lots and lots of writing and rewriting, which wouldn’t be the case here. It’s 1000s of repeated writes that eventually wear out flash memory. You can do a basically infinite number of reads.
If you add all the systems it supports you can fill up a 32 pretty easily. Arcade and neo Geo take up quite a bit.
I have a 16GB in my N8 Everdrive just because that’s the cheapest they had.
That's awesome! I remember playing this game a lot with my mom.
That's just awesome.
Do you have any heat issues with this? Would love to do it! Looks great!
Thanks! No heat issues, it's a Pi Zero W, so it doesn't get too hot and there's room for venting between the ports. It cost maybe $35-40 for everything and took a couple of hours. Google "pi cart", there's a great tutorial.
Yes, this is the one I used!
Downvote me if you like, but I never cared for these types of mods that essentially destroy an original cartridge to "create something cool".
There are a finite number of original Nintendo cartridges out there, and doing this removes one of them from the supply. I'm not a collector myself, but I am sympathetic to their plight. I just don't like to see original cartridges be rendered useless for their original purpose in this way.
You can buy new empty cartridge shells and stickers no need to destroy a game
The game might have been broken...
I used a Golf cartridge for mine, and bought a Battletoads label for it. Eventually got a mini NES 3d printed case for it.
Still, it's a very uncomfortable feeling seeing one of these. I just never personally cared for these type of modifications.
I get it, different strokes and all that, but I figured I should say something about it at least.
You're going to hate this then:

SNES cartridge urinal. To say that I was unimpressed when I saw it would be an understatement.
I've seen it, and I hate it as well.
Not even overproduced sports games deserve that kind of fate.
How unsanitary
Yea it’s your feelings on the matter and I’m not saying it’s not legit. I just always assume it was a broken board to make me feel a little better.
the mod is preserving the cart with modern tech. i understand this is not for everyone but the carts themselves do have a lifespan.
ROMs degrade through various means, such as
- Exposure to UV light, which may vary depending on the plastic used in the case, the label and the position of the chip in the cartridge.
- Heat produced by the console sitting under it, other parts in the cartridge and the ROM itself
Electrical damage such as voltage spikes and over-voltage conditions, which given the nature of the SFC power supply are not that uncommon.
The cartridge connects to the console via an edge connector. These are notorious for getting worn or dirty. Cleaning is possible, and re-surfacing is possible, but eventually the PCB substrate itself will disintegrate.
So, yes, a cart can be saved for 100 odd years (estimate) but unless its put under lock and key (air tight, no moisture, no static) then it will eventually die. So maybe its not such a bad thing that people find a different way to preserve the history.
That was my thought. Some people collect these just to have them & rarely play them. I'm using it to play all the NES games I loved as a kid - I have a modest income and wouldn't be able to do it without emulators. I guess I ruined a copy of a cheap old game that no one else really wanted, but I wanted something that reminded me of renting a NES & game at the video store and staying up all night trying to get my money's worth. I'm unapologetic, the market seems to show that this cart wasn't wanted very badly by anyone.
If its a common game, I find it OK.
Yeah And a game nobody cares about like "jeapardy" or "wheel of Fortune"
man, those were the only games at my grandmas house. so my cousins and brother and i would play it and get into fights with wheel of fortune. like if someone tried to solve the puzzle and put in wrong letter and lost. theyd shut off the game in anger and cause a huge brawl between 10 eleven year olds
Wow, I didn't think anyone had actually played those games. Nice story
I hear you. And with a number of places to buy empty shells that also come in a variety of colors I'd go that route myself rather than use an existing game, even if it's a crap game (though if it's actually a broken game then sure, why not?)
I used a copy of Top Gun to make one, so no loss.
I agree, I’m getting real sick of seeing this stuff on this sub.
I'm confused what's with the ports? Someone explain pls
The 3 USB ports are from an Amazon 4 port hub - I wanted two USB ports so I could play 2 player games, if you don't care about that it can just be a single port. I didn't need all 3 but that's how the best/inexpensive hub came. The other two are a micro USB for power and HDMI. Is that what you were asking?
Nice! I made one 1.5-2 years ago in an Australian Mario Bros cart I had lying around. Super fun novelty item
I was about to comment how you couldn’t have picked a better game that deserved to be gutted but now I see all the Anticipation love so I’ll just see myself out.
Haha, yeah, I thought so too (it was $2 at the game store and I figured no one would miss it) but after these comments I might have to throw it on there and give it a try.
where can i buy something like this already made?
I'm not sure, maybe Etsy. Really though, it was super simple to make, it didn't require any special skills, I just read the tutorial (with pictures), glued the parts where they said, and set up the Pi. Everything except the NES cart came from Amazon, there's even a part list with links in the guide.
I make and sell these in the UK. I generally dont post abroad but if you want to build your own I can offer advice.
I wonder, would airflow be a problem in this case?
Not for a Pi Zero. I have one in a tight-fitting case with practically no ventilation and it never overheats.
Not with a zero. I designed a kit for the Pi 3 and it has a fan though.
Nice work! I did one too. Put mine in a SMB/Duck Hunt cart. Are you using HyperSpin for the front end?
Thank you, I'm thrilled with how it turned out! I'm not, I don't even know what that is - can you enlighten me? I wanted a shell from a game I played as a kid but I got impatient (and cheap) so I went with this one, SMB/Duck Hunt would have been fun.
It’s a front end for everything. Beautiful menus, music, and video. Really puts the finishing touches on everything. Not the easiest thing in the world to configure though. Be prepared to watch at least a dozen YouTube tutorials. My favourite part of my setup is when you hover over a console menu option the original TV commercial for that console plays in the background.
Anticipation is a shitty game but you can buy blank replacement cartridges from china and use those rather than ruin a game.
Personally, I prefer separate EMUs for every system (on Android & Win10) & this doesn't even support any of the newer systems I use, so it's a no go IMUC.
Neat DIY project tho.
You can build one with a Pi 3 if you slim it down. I know someone who sells kits.
Retropie is software. This is a Rapsberry Pi. Thats like saying "Microsoft Word built into an NES cartridge."
It's a Raspberry Pi. Rapsberry Pi is a hip-hop group.
