I'm sure the Ineos team which was overlooking alternatives for head coach position would be relieved as well, if Southgate was anywhere on top of their list.
I seriously doubt he was in the shortlist. It was just media making narratives because of their past connections.
even if they did like him, it seems it would've been impossible.
No way Southgate would commit to a job until after Euros, and risk the news destabalizing, and there's no way Ineos would be ok with having no manager until after Euros.
If he was ever on a list, I'd assume it was a list of EVERY manager where they then narrow it down step by step as more and more criteria gets put in
You mean like the AWB '600 right backs' list?
tbf to AWB at least he is a literal god at one part of the game, 1v1 defending on the ground, pretty much limited to extremely limited in everything else.
Southgate is only good at boring people to death.
What is this piece of r/reddevils lore that I haven’t heard of ?
When we were looking for a new RB, our scouting network had supposedly put together a list of 600 potential targets for that position, and we decided that out of all those AWB was the best option for the money we paid 🥴
Jfc don't remind me, I already hear the clown music.
I can’t help wondering if it was just some genius misdirection on their part. Promote Southgate as an option so we would be happy with any other alternative.
So Ten Hag having a billion injured players was an unacceptable excuse such that Ineos had to look at alternatives, and yet they chose to look at Gareth fucking Southgate, the guy whose excuse is, "We never replaced Kalvin Phillips?" Make it make sense.
We would finish on exactly 38 points with maybe +1 goal difference?
Yes I’m picturing a season of 0-0s with a 1-1 draw at the etihad.
Southgate being linked to united wasn’t backed by any credible journalist
I think it could still happen. It ten Hag gets sacked before Christmas and Southgate is available, I wouldn’t be shocked if it happened.
I think that's why they are trying to get RVN as assistant. Sack ETH if it goes wrong, RVN steps in to his shoes ready to roll.
He gets the ball, passes it crisply, and moves. Fucking breath of fresh air for this England team.
Thats it. Kobbie Mainoo will not start in the next 3 games.
Not including him for 2 friendlies is harsh
I imagine Southgate stubbornly sticks with his "first XI" and hopes they start to click rather than prove the fans right by starting Mainoo and Palmer.
Imagine having a nearly perfect complementary three players for your midfield, and you kowtow to the Trent narrative and then pivot to starting a Labrador retriever against a team that's parking it and playing for a draw.
Nailed it
England were trying hard to draw because Slovenia is too weak to win. England secretly wishes that Denmark won in their game so England can finish second n meets Germany in the R16.
Its a much better excuses to get knocked out by a strong Germany than any potential weaker teams in knockout stages. England just wanna go home and be prepared for the next EPL season. Thars what England do. I think a Qfinal outing will be it, if they didn't get Netherlands in R16 and lost to them.
At least we can feel relieved abt his physical condition knowing Southgate the genius will bench him again for Conor for no reason.
Him and Palmer were the best players on the pitch
They linked up well together, too. It looked like they had a good connection right from the moment they were both on the pitch.

If he hadn't signed such a bonkers 7 year Chelsea contract, it would almost line up perfectly for the dream scenario of "United fan star player nears end of contract" at the same time as "United now good again and attract top players".
Unfortunately, his current contract has him there until he's 29 or so 😂

Can't imagine his price when mount was bought for 50m with a year left.
must be nice to play with a future Ballon d'Or winner
Why Palmer isn't playing over Foden is baffling.
He has the reason "We tried Conor & Mainoon both for 45 minutes and didn't win so may as well play TAA in midfield again"
One thing you have to admire about Mainoo is that he never shies away from the ball. Even after making a pass, he gets into a new position ready to receive the ball.
Yes I noticed this particularly about him last night. Always showing for the ball, and keeping things moving.
Its unreal to think that his first premier league game (apart from 11 minutes last season) was that Garna bicycle kick against Everton at the end of November.
No cap, there are players 5 years older than him in the prem wishing for his composure and football IQ.
I do not get why Kane does not play a proper striker. Mainoo created absolute banger of a chance and no one was in the box to slot it home.
Hes determined to play cdm
CDM Kane is making a comeback since he didn't get to do it at Bayern lol. #iykyk
Alan Smith special
Garef wants him to keep dropping deep but it’s clear he is unable to do it fast enough. He’s definitely lost a step
Lost a step? Kane was never fast
Wout is like a Maserati compared to kane
No
Yes
No
Maybe
Just cos he was never fast to begin with doesn’t mean he can’t become slower
He never depended on speed though
Yeah, and he’s lost a step from even there.
Kane is like a 10 year old Range Rover. He just can’t keep up even as a target man nowadays.
Going on like he's washed up. He scored 36 league goals this season.
In a league renowned for being open and end to end. I bet you he falls off within the next season or two.
So can he keep up or can't he? I can't keep up with the point you're making.
The fact that the league is renowned as being so end to end and that he's been banging in the goals suggests to me that he's not exactly struggling to keep up at the moment.
End to end where he’s given license to cheat on the press
If it's the chance I think you're talking about then Kane was literally in the box. He was at the back post on the shoulder of the defender, Kobbie chose to pull it back towards the edge of the box. Someone from midfield should have been making the run to get on the end of it. Kane had done his job by pulling the defenders away.
This. That was Jude's ball but he's just watching the play in line with the crappy game he played.
Kane has decided its how he should play and Southgate is a coward.
He'd never get the ball because we're not allowed to pass forward.
Kane prefer passing to the right into Palmer instead one-two with Mainoo ..
Totally. Though Palmer was open, the ball crossed a lot of grass and slowed down the attack.
Returning it to Mainoo was the more incisive if riskier option.
Tbf why the hell was Palmer that far away
Fucking screaming at my tv when that happened. Kobbie would have easily slotted that home.
How can he be so calm and composed at the age of 19?
Been calm since a kid
Is this really him?
Yup. Age 6, I believe
Quality response for a fair question... I often wonder what name (if any) he has printed on the back of that shirt. I like to think it's his own, coz he knew. 😎
Probably Cleverly.
🤣 .. I wonder what odds you'd have got back then on Tom C. Being Watfords manager at the ripe old age of 34?
Man I loved that training kit. They had one in blue too with the same design.
Better for us if he doesn't play but god Southgate is clueless
Mainoo showed why he should start but Phil phoden playing every 90.. Southgate like a kid on fifa shoe horning players
Kane should have played Mainoo in after the back flick. He chose the more obvious pass instead to Palmer.
I thought Mainoo had a massive impact when he came on. His positional sense is way beyond his years. He links everything together, imagine what we could see of him I'd he wasn't surrounded by tame and timid players. No passion at all. For passion, see Italy, rather see a team go out fighting than shut up shop and kill the game.
His pull back rolled over the penalty spot. It was comically perfect and no one made the run.
Jude was just standing at the edge of the box, that was his run to make. I think a teammate flamed him for not making the run but I’m not sure who
Granted I didn't pay attention to the game, because I was working during it (because fuck watching those England games actively), but I have seen nothing from Bellingham, just throwing his hands around.
He was decent enough in the first game but the next two he was poor. Frankly a disgrace he saw out the entire game yesterday as he was so awful.
Do Licha please .
I'm tired of people on r/soccer underrating him. He is the real deal.
They're underrating him because they don't want to praise/give credit to anything relating to United
I'm kinda on the fence about wanting him to start. One one hand, who doesn't want to see your club's young prospect flourishing on the big scene? On the other hand, Foden, Saka, Bellingham, and Kane will drop stinkers and then poor Kobbie will be the scapegoat for it
Why do you think that? Those players dropped stinkers last game and no one blamed Kobbie for it. Everyone still have him huge credit for doing well in his role.
Because it happened a lot of times. The England team as a whole would play like shit but the media will only hound the United player
Not if they play very well they don’t. Sure, they typically pick on the easy targets and high profile players, but if someone has actively played very well and impressed the fans and the rest of the team didn’t, then the press agency going to suddenly jump on the guy that did play well. This last game is proof of that. They have Kobbie huge credit whilst tearing most of the rest of the team apart.
The thing that was most noticeable for me when he came on was the speed of his passing - most passes here are 1/2 touches, when he came on (also Palmer) they really helped move the ball much faster which England were previously terrible at. Felt like he 'unlocked' Saka/Jude a bit as they finally had someone that could play the ball into them quickly and get a bit of movement going
Omg a compilation where I don't have to listen to a shit song as well.
Made up for Kobbie, should start the next game
Made an utterly unwatchable England somewhat watchable for 45min. Still bet Southgate would put him on the bench in knockout….
Seriously he looks more like a 100m player than all the other 100m players on the pitch
yeah m8 agreed w you. i was about to do other things half time, but didn't turn off the tv coz kobbie is playing lol. he did very well, should've got two goals at least w failed 1-2 with kane, n also tiring bellingham decided not to shoot WTF
Let me get this straight...if you play actual midfielders in midfield, they do midfielder things? Weird.
Add in an actual left-back at left-back and England might still be saved. By United.
Pure silk. Like a mix of Kroos and Modric.
He did look like Modric out there at times. Gliding around putting the ball wherever he wanted
This kid could have two guys clinging on to his ankles and still show for the ball and get a pass off. It’s uncanny. I was seeing him draw in THREE players when showing for it.
The calmness.
Doesn't do anything rashly, has a very good first touch and vision.
Hope he will be a beast for us. Scholes sees great potential in him.
Also, I don't see any future Rashford-like silliness with Mainoo. there's a mature 'thinking man' in that young head of his.
Lets hope so
Southgate probably watched this and thought: "nah fam, I'm good with TAA in my midfield."
Thanks for posting this I missed 80% of the game as is bored me to sleep, woke up and seen it was 0-0 and was glad I did fall asleep
He ain't starting next game, Southgate will pick the same starting 11 as last game
So smooth, so calm
Only if Kane passed it back to Mainoo in the end.
This boy doesn’t look 19! The composure on the ball and the movement off it is simply amazing! Hope he becomes a United legend.
Kid is good
I’m pleasantly surprised there isn’t music on the video.
Star boy
He makes it look so easy!
Please play this man! The way he moves and plays the ball shows a Great talent. Him and palmer has to start next match
Haven't seen anyone appreciate the run that Kobbie makes for that Gordon pass. Everyone is praising Gordon for it, but by running into that space he basically forces Gordon to play it. Gordon executed the pass well but the vision that split the defence was Kobbie's.
Star ⭐️
He was outstanding when he came on. Brought a wonderful balance to the midfield and played a step ahead of other players. I really can’t believe his age, plays with so much maturity.
you could see the game visibly change from the exact moment he came on lol. And when Palmer also came on the game just changed completely. if we start with these two we win that game last night.
That pass across the box was his only misplaced pass all night. Absurdly better than TAA and Gallagher.
Also highlights how poor Jude has been. We’re genuinely carrying him atm and I’d drop him over Foden.
I genuinely love this lad. He’s quality, definitely going to be a future star. Right from the moment he came on he elevated England’s game. His movement, positioning and link up play is just ridiculous. Even at his young age his game awareness and intelligence already exceeds many of his older and more experienced peers.
Stands to reason that he probably won’t see any action now for the rest of the tournament while Southgate continues to pander to his buddies.
Good Kobbie isn’t getting game time. He’ll be fit to start the season. If Southgate doesn’t rotate his players they are out within the next two games
Thought he was good when he came on, just a shame theres zero intensity in Englands play.
He has to start the next game
Ralf Rangnick's and the Austrian are doing well ... they game a great game
I literally stopped watching the match after 5 odd minutes from the starting, it was so boring and got myself to watch, Denmark vs Serbia, though it ended up in similar fashion but was more interesting to watch.
All I heard about this match, was after maino and palmer were substituted the game got more interesting to watch and they were literally looking to score unlike the rest minutes.
On another day it would read Bellingham 2 goals Mainoo 2 assists
The tackle at 1:33 was beautiful
The talent in this England squad is unbelievable. Southgate is absolutely stealing a wage as a manager. I genuinely feel like 75% of this sub could be a better manager for England.
Only backward passes in 80% possesion half versus much weaker opponent. No threat at all.
Anyone would think kobbie played the whole match judging by how many passses he made 💪 hope he starts the next game 🙏👹
Way better than Rice.
Ive im not mistaken the only misplaced pass he had was the cut back to which nobody was in the box for, if Kane wasn’t so obsessed with being a CDM he’d have been there like any other striker
Learning from Eriksen, I see similarities.
Why does Kobe look better than Jude…
Smooth as silk
How Kane doesn't even attempt to play that first time into Mainoo's path is anybodies guess.
Wow he is something special. Something that the likes of Scholes, Xavi, Zizou possess - time and space on the ball upon receiving
The amount of shit I see fans casually throw at Mainoo is bordering on a disgrace.
We are dangerously close to judging him on what he doesn’t do (not can’t) than what he is almost world class at
Where are you seeing this? I would probably just avoid those places as anyone with a brain and eyeballs knows this kid is legit
I am not a conspiracy theorist, but honestly, i noticed that the England players are avoiding passing to Mainoo. I might be overthinking, but i noticed it clearly. ETH should consider having a conversation with Southgate about this. The national team players might kill the lads' confidence.
I felt like they were scared to pass to him when he was coming deeper on showing for the ball to try and get us out of the first phase. Maybe it's a matter of trust but Kobbie's very good at turning and finding a pass or dribble in that danger zone
I think they’re not confident in his abilities to handle the ball under pressure that’s why they don’t pass in certain positions, I can’t blame them for that as very few players can play so well in the tight spots that Mainoo excels, but they need to realise that he can handle it

I am just relieved we didn't end up with Southgate as our coach
