We don't know for sure Benni is gone. If they are concerned about ETH and VdG being too similar and bad cop / bad cop then getting rid of Benni is an odd choice given he is the happy, personable guy on the coaching staff.

The specifics of the scope of his role are unclear but it feels too big a downgrade to go from managing PSV, finishing 2nd in the Eredivisie and winning the Dutch cup there to only coach some aspects of the first team at his next club and not be a part of the overall tactical planning. Like Ruud can of course reject the gig to manage Burnley, but why would we waste time approaching him if he was never going to accept a vastly reduced role?

I’ve said this before and got downvoted, but for his type of football to work, if we do sign him and he ends up as our best player next season, we’ll probably be sitting in 15th place or worse. Something has gone calamitous and we go into every game averaging 35% possession, that’s when players like him shines. He is simply not a defender any elite team wants. I’m sorry if that’s not what you want to hear, but it is what it is

Eriksen mostly worked especially against poor teams because he knows how to keep shape and stay deep compared to mount who wants to press and chase whoever is on the ball which means our midfield becomes a hole when bruno is next to him.

Mount hasn’t shown the defensive discipline and defenIce positional intelligence to do that role, which is why he can’t be the 8, especially when casemiro isn’t on form but even if he is, he’ll struggle to be on his own facing 4 men running at him on the counter.

Eriksen is also much better at ball retention compared to bruno and mount which is another distinction

He can not play in the 8. I admit he’s a fantastic backup 10 to have but that’s about it, he can play out wide (dont think it’s ideal compared to playing real wingers), he can especially play in one of the two wide ten positions in a 4-2-2-2/3-4-2-1, but he can not play in the 8. Like you say he’s a fantastic squad player. Just that it was a waste of a signing for 60 million. If we signed him on a free now and he was happy to be a squad player then happy days, signing him as a starting 8 for 60 million was a bad signing

It was clear at the time this would be the case because he was never starting for us next to bruno (it failed every time and will fail every time, because that’s how football works - midfield balance is important and we don’t have the 6 to cover for it, we can’t afford one good enough either)

He will never ever work next to bruno, he can play instead of bruno - he can only play in the number 10 in this current system. Whenever Mount has played next to Bruno it’s been a disaster and it always will be a disaster because midfield balance being important will never change. Im aware city have played 2 10s before but we are unlikely to have that kind of system under ten hag based on what he’s shown so far. Also what kind of dm do you think we’re gonna sign? Also bernado/david silva are far more comfortable at retaining the ball than mount or bruno

Bro when mount was fit last season, once mainoo came into the team we NEVER saw that midfield again for a reason, the midfield is only worse if we high press btw, that’s the whole reason it didn’t work when we played it last season, we pressed high and then leaked chances up the ass because there’s no ball retention there

we signed him with only one year left which means that’s as cheap as we’d ever get him

I think we’ll likely keep Maguire, though I think for his career, he should probably leave and be a starter at a different club. West Ham last year felt like a good move at the time. Lindelof is somebody I could see us letting go given his contact situation, though if it’s to Turkey as rumoured, we’ll get pennies. We’re also seemingly in talks about a new contract for Evans and maybe we won’t loan out Kambwala - that gives us Martinez, Evans, Maguire, Kambwala and a new CB. Ideally you’d want two CB’s, one to start, and another bench option that can play EtH wants to play - Maguire and Evans can’t do it, though they were incredibly important to us last season.

One player I’d consider bringing in would be Frimpong as he can play as a RB and as a RW. Last season made me lose faith in Antony and I’d like to see Amad more, but I think we need a bit more quality on that side. If AWB does leave, it also offers an option at RB, if Dalot gets injured or has to cover again on the left.

I really hope to see us making some moves this week. Finally making a decision on the Branthwaite situation, whether they commit to making a second bid or working away. Maybe advance on the Zirkzee talks, informing Bologna of their intention to trigger the clause once it’s available. We seem to have slowed down in past week. I want to get behind INEOS and I want to see them bringing in talent early.

It really was a blend of both, pragmatic and attractive football. They played quite dynamic football all season long. But would occasionally play more defensive and focus on the counters against stronger opponents like Ajax and Feyenoord.
