That's hilarious. Wite male Herr. Do they really do that?? Do I do that? Well I have a black friend, so I'm obviously not racist lol but wow. Like your colleagues actually say that shit out loud? Amazing.
It's that third paragraph that gets me. People of my own race see me as too nerdy. That's fuckd. You've presented yourself as eloquently as possible Here. Are you trying to make me racist? Or are you saying literally other dark skinned people have given u grief over your accomplishments? Fuck them. Advice: do the study groups as they appear and they will as you do your academic thing. Try to make friends with that group. Not the b or the w or whatever. Once you help a white girl pass her exam she'll get over any of her ingrained stereotypes pretty quick.
- Just because you have a friend that is black does not mean that you are not racist.
- Telling a black person they speak eloquently is a micro aggression because it assumes that they would likely not be eloquent.
- A white girl is not going to suddenly lose ingrained stereotypes because a black person helped them accomplish a task.
Racism is like water that we are all standing in. It takes intentional work to recognize racism or bias in your own thoughts and actions and call it out. It starts with examining your own role in perpetuating systems of oppression. White people have been unfairly advantaged in institutions for centuries which makes it seem like whiteness is the default. It's not. This type of bias seeps into our assumptions, our thoughts, our worldviews that whiteness is the norm and blackness is the "other". Microaggressions won't just end because a white person thinks a black person is cool.
lmao.
Jesus man that’s fucking awful. Like I have friends who will make jokes about their race and experiences but the rule of thumb should be, if it’s not you it’s not yours the joke about. Must be exhausting to deal with, sending hugs
Keep being authentic to yourself and the right people will come along. Try to stick it out. You just went through a huge change moving to college and away from friends you used to see everyday. You got this.
I feel the same at the time. I am German and doing a student exchange to France, so every joke they say to me has either to do with me being nazi or Germany being Nazi. I don’t know if that is racism, but it really hurts being prejudiced because of where I’m from.
