So I got a big tub of Whey and Casein protein powder back in November of 2019, I put it in a couple vaccume sealed bags and tossed them into the deep freezer, not stand up freezer. . They are still in there. was thinking about using them. They are now approx 4.5 years old since I put them in there, still vacuum sealed. Thoughts?
What are your thoughts on my old stored protein powder.
New Prepper QuestionsTry it. It won't hurt you. Might taste off.
I threw some out because it started to taste bad. Including a couple unopened containers. Didn't get sick or upset stomach.
It's very unlikely that the powder would be harmful or toxic in any way, but it may taste bad, and may taste of other things that in your freezer.
Yeah I do the same thing. Cycle it out every 3 years though just for good measure. I trust a vegan protein more than a dairy based if age has gotten up there. But at bout 5 yrs you should be fine, I'd start to worry after 7. Military gives the vaccum sealed powder drinks with protein so i imagine this would be no different. This is of course assuming proper temperature storage n such.
In the freezer they are likely still good. Your biggest issues of expiration would be: Rancid fats, and the freezer has likely put that off (and you would be able to smell/taste it). Nutrition/vitamin deterioration. According to Brigham Young research, this happens 5’s faster in the heat. It’s likely it’s lost some % of available nutrients, but also likely not much if frozen the whole time.
I’d be very comfortable using it. I found some whole powdered milk that had been in my freezer for years and the fats didn’t go rancid.
I've eaten whey protein stored way less good than you and it was 2 yrs expired and it was completely fine. Couldn't even notice (except for the mouse poop on the cover)
Try a shake and give it a day or two to see how it affects you. I’m not an expert but I doubt it will kill you. 😅
You now have me wondering about the best way to do this… would it be better to bag it with some oxygen absorbers? Or maybe it’s something you should just keep a rotating stock of?
Still have a tub of chocolate and another of vanilla of different brands sitting in the cupboard above my fridge. They’ve been there since 2015 with temps annually going up to +33C in the summer. It still tastes fine and hasn’t gone rancid. Stuff in the deep freeze like flour, nuts, candy bars, protein bars last for forever (we also have that stuff from 2017 or so and it’s still good).
I'd probably try it but I'll eat expired cans and older dry goods.
For protein powder I think it would probably be better to rotate an amount that you can get through. A tub can have a shelf life of a year or two without extra steps and will probably go bad quickly if it get damp. I'd worry about condensation after being taken out of the freezer.
Call the number on the tub.
It should be fine, you should be able to tell right away if it has clumped or smells, or is otherwise blemished. If so don't eat it.
I'm only vaguely familiar with Cassien protein, but I've consumed whey which wasn't refrigerated and was older
If it tastes bad, toss it, otherwise go for it.
What temperature is the deep freezer?
It fluctuates as it kicks on and off, I have an exterior thermometer on it, it will stay between 0F and -6F
At below -18C they ought to be fine. Not much going on at that temperature.
So the date is printed because the protein synthesis is starting to break down and will not be as effective. While you will still get some benefits, the use is degraded.
You mean bacteria food
I’ve used protein powder older than that I left in the original Mylar packaging in the back of my cupboard. Used all 5kg and didn’t notice any change in smell or taste and didn’t get an upset belly or die.
I’ve always been a bit relaxed about best before dates because I really hate food waste. Obviously some things I won’t risk but even eggs will last weeks beyond the BBE.
