My uncle and I build pools for a living and this is his wild creation in his back yard. Lazy river with an island that’s going to have a putt putt course on it. A swim-up bar with seats anchored to the bottom. Three IF3 pumps, four main drains, lighted bubblers and deck jets.
There’s a good chance this will end up being one of, if not the biggest fiber glass/vinyl liner pool in Missouri. It’s half show piece and half private oasis. Let’s hope the liner fits!

What’s the total cost so far?
I’m not positive at the moment. The supplier was so excited to see this get done they started just sending stuff so I’ll have a better idea when it’s done. Just the concrete for the retaining walls, the footing, bottom and stamped border so far is in the tens of thousands.
What was the most difficult part of the pool?
Dropping that bag has got to be it.
Ive dropped a bunch of liners over 35 years. Nothing in this league. Outstanding. Who is making the vinyl liner? And how many pounds is it?
It’s made by GLI and it weighs about 480 pounds

Why didn’t you go with plaster?
Agreed, I had a liner pool once. While 10000x better than above ground, its still felt wrong. Pebble tech feels sooo nice.
Vinyl pools are usually better for colder climates and are much cheaper. Also gunite pools suck lol
Concrete is more expensive. Also if they only build vinyl pools, they aren't likely experienced or set up to build a concrete pool.
Of course concrete is more expensive, but for that type of high end pool, the cost difference shouldn’t matter that much, and the benefits are considerable
We’re actually concrete guys by trade. We started building pools in 08 when the housing market crashed. People weren’t moving so they bought pools. We’ve done a concrete one before but like you mentioned we got into vinyl and stuck with it. We still do residential concrete on homes as well.
Why didn’t you do concrete in this case? Cost / benefit ?
Cost and a little bravado I guess. He wanted to see if a liner pool this big would be feasible plus the manufacturer is giving us a deal on some of the materials because they were excited to see something this big be made. If there’s somebody out there crazy enough to want one like this we know we can do it.
Dude, if I were you, I’d would have pointed out all the setbacks of having a pool with liner. I mean, this seems to be a high end pool. Why cheap out like that?

Liner pools are the cheapest out there, it seems that here this is a higher end pool and it was spent a good amount of money to cheap out on that important detail.

I don't understand why you would go through all the trouble of creating a pool design like this, and then putting a liner in it. There's a place and price point for liners, and this ain't it. It would be like buying a luxury car and putting the cheapest tires you can on it. But hey, to each their own.
Mostly because the company that makes all the panels and liner gave us a good deal because they’ve never made one this big so they wanted to see it done. It’s only about 30% larger than the biggest stock one we build on a regular basis. You’re right though that most people would just do a concrete pool if they were going to spend this much money we’re getting a deal but this one would cost over 200 probably
Isn’t that gonna make them getting a new liner one day a giant pain in the ass if the company goes out of business or they say mmm no that wasn’t worth it?
I get the impression that this isn’t a residential project, it’s clearly a pro doing a showcase piece on what I have to assume is a ton of land. Looks like a fun project! Can’t imagine they’re all that concerned about replacement availability as a pro working with presumably a trusted vendor
Not to mention the nightmare of keeping all the Little Rock’s and gravel out of the pool constantly, which will eventually result in a hole in the liner.
The only holes I’ve ever encountered were from dogs, windows melting it from the sun reflection, and rocks that were behind the liner when it was originally dropped.

How does one get the dimensions right for this liner? pretty insane design
We had a pretty intricate drawing to start with. We used a laser and painted huge radius lines with strings and 100ft tapes. Other than that we just built it off of the normal type of drawing like any other pool.
If there was ever any questions or discrepancies over whether or not we did it right, the supply company can come out and basically 3D map the whole thing and build the liner to fit.

This one is from GLI Pool Products. We used Latham for everything for a long time, but we’ve been branching out lately.
Just looked and Latham owns them. I wish every company had a 3D scanner.

the island makes such a cool bar/chilling spot... with a little focus on vegetation, that'd be the coolest little back yard escape.
That’s the plan! My uncle is a great landscaper at heart. I wish I had pictures of his last place. This one is going to look pretty sweet and I will definitely post update photos when it’s all done.

Hell yeah haha we painted them on the ground before we ever set a single panel! Got all our points and set pins all over. The build went very well all things considered. It was definitely worth taking the time to get it measured right beforehand.

What’s the advantage of Fiberglas/plastic walls over metal?

this was built to have a vinyl liner. this is typical construction for vinyl, but i can't imagine how they're getting a liner to fit this incredible design.
Measurements gotta be spot on. Install on a nice hot sunny day. Stretch right in.
If it's cut short anywhere fucking forget it haha.
so many measurements, so many curves, you would have to measure every 6-12 inches to get it correct. and, all of those welds to be able to adjust to the curves. i'm thinking of how easy it was for my 16 x 32 pool.
Yeah, it'd be an AB measure for form.
Or they build it to spec and have the liner made to spec.
The second one sounds way easier tbh. We've done a lot of free forms, but im sure if companies came out to give a bid, it wouldn't be cheap for this.
