Unfortunately, we have the electoral college system so overall popular numbers don't tell the whole story. It looks much worse in the battleground states...
If popular votes counted we would never have dealt with the Trump nightmare at all.
Admittedly, it's possible he'd just have campaigned elsewhere to squeeze the margins and won anyway.
Of course, if it was like that since 1788, so much would change that I don't think it'd be clear where America would be eight years ago.
Which is why a Democratic candidate generally needs to get about +3% more nationally to overcome the electoral college.
