Marketing for a startup podcast

Any methods that anyone has had success with for a low budget startup podcast? A few of my friends and family listen, but so far that’s about it.

We post TikTok, insta, YouTube, and Facebook clips that have gotten some views. But I’m looking for any tips that could bring us some success at gaining new viewers.

I contemplated maybe getting a table at our local farmers market/trade show and talking to people/handing out cards with our socials on them. Open to ideas!

We are also a new startup podcast, everything I read says not to focus on the numbers, really push on making great content. That being said, I suggest reaching out to other podcasts and doing trailer swaps. Make a trailer for your show and have them play it at the beginning of their podcast then play theirs at the beginning of your show! It's a great way to get your name out there. I would also definitely suggest getting that table at your local trade show IF it fits your demographic. If you're a podcast about technology and you go to a farmers market, you probably won't get many interested people. If you're a podcast about farming, definitely go to the farmers market. Something that really helped my cohost and I to get into the right mindset was to make up a person that would listen to your show! Down to the last detail. When you have that in your mind or written down, then think how would they listen to your show? How are they gonna find out about you? When are they gonna listen to you? When you can answer those questions you can really focus on getting your podcast to the people that are gonna stay for your content.

I agree with what your saying with one caveat:

Forget trailer swaps. Most other shows fail to follow through and it can get demoralizing. Not only that if they’re smaller than you OR same size it won’t really help (sure it’s better than nothing but you get what I mean I’m sure).

Instead, use a program like Rephonic and look up shows in your genre that are around 20-30% larger than your own.

Offer them $100 bucks to drop your trailer AND a link in their show notes.

Far more effective and keep doing this. As your audience/listeners grows you can keep reaching out to larger shows and it creates a momentum affect.

You’d be amazed what some of these so-called “big shows” will do for $100 bucks!

THIS IS TBE BEST WAY TO GROW YOUR SHOW

I looked up shows same genre as me. Made sure they had at least 25% more downloads and estimated followers than me. I emailed the creator and offered $100 if they’d drop a 30 second trailer of my show in one of their episodes, and link to my website in their show notes.

Note: a dedicated fucking WEBSITE no link tree nonsense**

I did this twice a month on a $200 budget a month.

Grew subs/listeners and got a shit load of emails in about three months.

I didn’t waste my time with free cross promos with other shows because they almost never follow through.

Keep doing this and in 4 months for just a total of $800 spread out across that period… you’ll get dedicated listeners and subscribers.

Instagram: if you’re gonna use this you need to make a reel EVERY SINGLE DAY it’ll take you six or months but eventually it’ll convert to followers-> listeners-> subscribers. Just takes time.

Tic Tok: sucks delete

Facebook: will work… IF you run ad campaigns but expect to pay $500-2000 a month to see conversions into actual subscribers.

Really, any other method than paying a larger show to drop your trailer and add a link is gonna take a lot more effort and probably not even work.
