Confirmed EF-1 tornado touches down near Pittsburgh Zoo, 1st in city limits since 1998
I guess the old “tornado coming over Mt. Washington” story has finally been dethroned…
What's that story? I remember having to shelter in place in the Robinson Best Buy during the 1998 tornado but don't remember where in the city it touched down.
Pretty much just that. It was the last tornado in Pittsburgh proper and I heard so many people talk about it “coming right over Mr. Washington.”
This happened right before I was born, my family is from there. My dad has told me about a tree that got knocked over and the stump was always there for my childhood. Must’ve been some crazy shit.
I was 8 when it happened, and lived in Mt. Washington. I was a couple blocks away from most of the damage, but I remember being terrified of any thunderstorm after that for the next 2 years or so.
We walked up to Virginia Ave the day after and I remember the back of the old laundromat (or maybe next door to it) was ripped clear off. You could see straight inside lol
Driving down McCardle, noticed the litter from the hillside starting to blow upwards, thought "that's strange..". Rained so hard it was a white-out for about 10 seconds on E. Carson. Got to Oakland and heard on the radio about reports of a tornado on Mt Washington.
Last week, when I noticed leaves and paper blowing upwards, I decide to head to the basement, looking at the storm track the NWS released it finished about a par 4 from where I live now.
Waiting to see how close I can be 25-ish from now for the next one :-)
