Wanting to start another welding job soon I’m wondering if my long hi vis pants and long hi vis shirt (tucked in) with my steel cap boots is alright to wear to an interview or do I need to dress smarter
Thank you

Helmet with stickers from every worksite your mate was inducted too. That will blow their socks off.
😎
If a small/medium business with the workshop on Site, yes, with the clothing as you may get a tour of the workshop and meet with w/shop supervisor and employees, be shown current work and machinery. Can't do that without PPE. I think it will look good and show you're ready to go. (No welding burns in clothing!) If a corporate office, large company, multinational or purely a HR/ recruitment interview then just smart casual as wearing PPE is pointless.
I always like it when people rock up for an interview in work clobber, even if they are technical roles that require higher education. I think what you suggested but nearly presented is spot on.
My partner frequently interviews welders (boilermakers) for jobs. Your attitude on the day is more important than how you are dressed. He's seen it all; high vis, casual clothes, suits, you name it. None of it matters as much as whether you have an attitude or not.
Welders are in constant demand and if you are a good fit personality wise with decent skills, you'll get a job without an issue.
Thanks for your help everyone I appreciate it PPE it is👌
My job is a purely office job but there is a facility attached that requires PPE.
On my interview I wore a dress and nice heels that are interview appropriate and was told I couldn't get a tour of the facility without PPE so maybe wear your work stuff if interview is on site
Safari suit.
Be a person of taste.
Doesn't have to be good taste.
Safari suit
Polyester goes well in hot work areas
Wear all your shit, you can do a weld test right there and then
BYO adflo even.
I guess you could always ask them when planning a time for the interview, "would you like me to attend in work attire?" Would give you a good answer of what the specific interviewer would like.
I would turn up in your hi-vis clothes if I was welding. My job requires you weld as part of your interview so unless you like holes in your casual clothes, just wear presentable workwear. Just ring up the company just incase
Just as long as your clothes are neat and clean go for it.
Polo Shirt With Chinos and some boots
I rocked up to a job and got it just because l had a good attitude. My skills weren't up to scratch (l hadn't picked up an oxy for years) but, that didn't matter in the end. You might also be asked to a weld test on the spot which isn't gonna be possible in a white business shirt. Make sure your hi-vis is clean and ironed, no holes in your clothes from wear or spatter, boots in good order because if you look like you don't take safety seriously that will be noticed. Keep eye contact when you answer questions, be upfront and professional, you are there to sell yourself as the welder they need for the job and be honest but, be careful of what words you use - don't leave them with any doubts about you.
I work in mining, I've interviewed people who came in high vis as well as smart casual. It didn't phase me either way, I'd lean towards wearing high vis that is in good nick.
If you have hi Vis, I'd wear that. Otherwise dress tidy
I interview potential staff for site based jobs. I genuinely don’t care what they wear but generally they come in PPE. To be expected.
I reckon it is fine, if the question it then let them know you thought there would be a practical component to the interview and you wanted to be prepared.
Goodluck
It’s fine, if it is what you will be wearing to work it’s fine
I was always taught ‘dress for the job, but fancier’. If you are going for a welding job, dress like a welder, just either buy a new set of clothes or really clean up a pair you’ve got. Polish your boots and PPE and make sure your personal hygiene is on point. Obviously the good ol ‘don’t break the discrimination act’ when selecting a shirt, it’s best not to wear your Brazzers or Biltong shirt. A polo shirt or plain t-shirt is best with blue collar interviews. My husband works in mining. He likes the people that dress in clean hi vis. Usually it means they’ve done their research or worked in the industry for a while (both rare qualities when it comes to mine work).
Are you able to call ahead and find out if there'll be any need to pass through PPE areas?
This would be the best bet. Is there any specific PPE requirements, and will i be expected to do any practical tests.
If no PPE and on practical then i would be in smart casual. If they have PPE but no practical - then compliant PPE (IE maybe steel caps). If there's full PPE and practical, then standard equipment and ensure you have everything else you need (helmet/gloves etc).
Wear a tuxedo like Will Ferrell on Stepbrothers
Yeah probably not required till you actually get the job. Smart casual is perfect. Clean thirty, clean Jean and closed shoes.
I would only turn up in smart casual if it was an interview at a cafe. If you were interviewing someone for a manual trade, you would expect to see a tradesman, not a man/woman about town. Unless he was going in to be a rep for the company to talk to potential clients. In which case I'd be with you on that.
Not really no, I work in mining and I never heard or saw guys turning up at interviews in hivis Safety boots and the lot.
Add a tie, but let them know you’ll remove it if they need you to demonstrate your skills.
Dress shoes, dress pants & a button up shirt.
Yeah, for a welding job I would disagree. Turn up as if you're ready to start right away. Dress for the job you want, etc. Turning up looking like you want to be a salesman doesn't scream "I'm here to get shit done", which is what an employer wants.
Wear your helmet show em you mean business
