went into this convenience store on the corner of H&M because I saw they had American snacks in the window. No prices on anything. Get up to check out and it was nearly $48 for 2 sodas and 2 bags of chips. Isn’t it against the law to not have prices posted? Wish I would have realized it but was in the middle of getting an important phone call checking out. I’ve bought American snacks at places like this before and I got a whole case of imported soda and 7 bags of chips for maybe $60. Do these places just make up prices and if you say yeah no thanks will they try to haggle prices and negotiate? Never seen this before.
Maybe a little harsh on you, but maybe pay attention to the task at hand? Either the important phone call, or the purchase. Are you a grown-up?
You know if they weren't on the phone the shop still doesn't display pricing, OP still picks up the same items, goes to the counter and gets rung up for the same 50 bucks, and still make the same post..
But the true unspoken point is that they should have waited until tomorrow or Wednesday to complain.
I think the point was to pay attention, notice the insane price and be like "um Hey" rather than blindly paying.
Just an idea. If you get to the counter and they blatantly try to rip you off you quite simply tell them to fuck off and put it back themselves.
Wish I would have realized it but was in the middle of getting an important phone call checking out.
And what, you expect sympathy from the community? Good grief.
if you have to ask….
I check the price of nearly everything in this day and age. It's too easy to get caught out, even at the supermarkets.
But I can't judge. I went to a local cafe for a coffee, and decided to indulge in a take-away Reuben toastie, which didn't show the price on the shelf. $21 bucks later, it was a learning experience.
Most checkout people don't even say the price any ore. They just shove the terminal towards you. The fact most people find this acceptable is part of the financial problem we are having.
I paid $20 for a ream of paper at officeworks the other day due to this.
"Thankfully" it was a $20 donation to charity, but still...
Ever been to Ezy Plus Inglewood? They've never displayed prices on anything over the 15 years I've been going there. I don't complain though, I'm happy to spend any amount on whatever imported American candy they have on offer.
Ì live close by. No prices however the prises are reasonable considering its 24 hour and often imported goods.
They don’t have to put prices on them, but if they do they can’t charge a higher price at the til, so a lot of them get around the rule by just avoiding ticketing. TBF, convenience stores and small stores in the city are notorious for obnoxiously high pricing.
Was the place you bought a case of soda and 7 bags of chips for $60 a little convenience store in the CBD? Everyone knows those places are more expensive because they can be. People still go there regardless of the price, even those on very important phone calls
Jamaica Blue cafes are the same. No prices on any of the food. I get anxiety from everytime I ask the price of something and it's met with an eye roll.
What are American snacks?
Over 330 million years ago, our continents were joined in the largest of the "supercontinents" our planet has known, a single landmass we call Pangea. The first species of birds and reptiles evolved to lay hard-shelled eggs, which was one of the reasons dinosaurs thrived for 165 million years and birds still do. During this amazing time ...
... and that is why today, people in Australian stores can buy snacks made in America.
Garbage - Dr Pepper drinks, Reese's pieces, pickles in a bag... endless amounts of shit
Nothing worth eating.
What are Australian snacks?
The education system has failed you.
OMG that's like something straight out of Nazi Germany!!!!!!
Not illegal lots of places do it, go to any work wear shop.
Are they supposed to display prices? Yes. Does anyone enforce that? Not really. Do you have any remedy after you've paid? Nope. What should you do next time? March up to the counter and ask them what the price is on the things you want to buy, before you pay.
If it's too much, yeah sure, haggle. They're counting on people just paying whatever. If lots of folk start wasting they're time, they'll buy a pricing gun.
