Buyer sends me this video, saying that the GPU that he bought from me "isn't working"..until you watch the video they took.

It's been 3 weeks since the buyer has bought my RX 5700 XT (used for 3 ½ years and worked when I last used it like 2 months ago and then kept it somewhere safe where it wouldn't be damaged.) and for the past 2 weeks, a dispute has been ongoing, as the buyer claims that the GPU isn't working (1st time they had a 500W PSU in combination to an i5 9400, which then I told them to change it to 600W and above).

Second attempt was them trying a 650W PSU and still no luck. I asked them to send me proof via video...and based on my own knowledge, the GPU can't be causing that right? The inability of the whole PC to start up?

Therefore I've asked them to send another video of them attempting to start the PC with their previous GPU.

the short red led flash is when the psu shuts down, it briefly detects too low of a voltage before shutting down. try reseating ram gpu and all the power cables, i suspect that either the mainboard or the psu shuts off because of a fault protection

Obviously shutdown faults can come from a lot of places, but last time this happened to me it was because my CPU fan was coming loose and not cooling the cpu, causing heat to spike and whole PC to shut down during obot.

Looks like the GPU is dangerously close to a metal case or metal PSU case. I'm willing to bet it's being shorted at the power plug solder points on the card.

I bet it's not a problem with the card, the PSU is sitting right next to the back part of the GPU, the PSU case is probably making contact with the solder of the GPU and making a big short somewhere.

In this specific case, it doesn't really matter if it's daisy chained since most PSUs don't use per-port OCP (from a fire-prevention standpoint, it absolutely does matter so you don't overheat the PSU-side connector or potentially high AWG cabling).

You can tell it's triggering the OCP on the power supply because it shuts down all the power rails.

edit: meant low ampacity, high AWG. Low AWG is better for higher currents.

Always use the cable that comes with the PSU. I once accidentaly used two cables (8 pin each) from a different PSU (same brand just different type, had too many different cables laying around) and my system wouldn't boot. Then I found the single cable that splits to 2×8 and all was fine.

It's fine, don't change it. They're intended to be used this way - the one cable per plug is only a thing for low-awg cables, which honestly shouldn't even have two plugs per cable then.

as good practice, Your not meant to use splitter cables for multiple ports, a cable can carry like 300w and your GPU is under that so you should be fine, but it's better to split if possible

From the way it looks so tightly packed I initially thought it got shorted out by the PSU's metallic enclosure since the connector pins on the back are exposed. I would expect something to be plugged in incorrectly though, it's insanely rare for a GPU to draw so much during POST that the PSU shuts down. I successfully booted a 300W Vega from a 10 year old 400W PSU once and those cards were famous for their transients.

Buyer has a weired small PSU, cable management did not look so good, and having the psu hitting the gpu? The ssd on the Psu. I believe the buyer has not even enough PCI lanes to fire the GPU 100% with that pc. Overall sad story. But let us know how you handle it at the end

For whatever reason the PSU just couldn't handle the GPU in that Frankenstein setup. Could be improperly installed or just cheap. Who knows, but probably both.

This is no different than if you were to sell a 4090 to someone and they did something stupid and tried installing it in a stock Dell desktop from 2006. Not all 600 watt PSUs are equal even if installed and wired correctly.

People do stupid shit like that on the user end all the time. There's a reason sales are so commonly final as is.

I'm unlucky enough to both have a degree in this stuff while also being a certified mechanic (I've lead an interesting life lol) and if I had a dollar for every time someone tried blaming someone else for their own fuck ups (just asking my opinion on the matter or otherwise), I wouldn't have to work for a living.

In Sweden if you purchase from a private person, once the purchase is completed, it's non refundable. Not sure if it's the same where you live, but if it is, just ignore them. It's their responsibility to make sure that the product they are buying is non-faulty before making the purchase (this is flipped for companies, then it's their responsibility) but I asume you didn't sell it through a company.

I never requested them to pay via friends and family, since that payment method is almost always linked to scammers. Why is the model of the psu covered in the video? Why is the PSU strapped with a zip tie? Does the PC boot without GPU in it?

Without the buyer having evidence that the PC booted before installing your GPU, the buyer has nothing on you and you can ignore all requests from him, until PayPal directly chimes in.

Have had multiple disputes behind me, on both ends. In Germany it makes the biggest impact "who" is selling. In this case, it's a private sale and PayPal can't insure anything but the sold item was packaged and arrived.

PayPal for goods and services is money thrown down the drain, always was in my case. I get a damaged product, or am missing an item which should be part of the product, PayPal doesn't have any resolution for that. Basically they asked me only for the proof if the package arrived. Everything else is at the free will of the seller.

There are scammers who abuse the system and want to force the seller into returning money in exchange for returning the product. The product will never be returned. You will get a shoebox full of hopes and dreams returned. And the dispute will be closed.

Other than that, one example is my PayPal dispute with a reputable company overseas, which was not concluded in my favor, but the item received was obviously faulty (poor QC). An offered solution was to send the goods back to China and then I will receive a reimbursement. This would not be settled by PayPal intermediate, but the dispute would be closed if I accept this. Basically, they told me to give a product back, potentially "losing" shipment and then not reimbursing me the paid sum. No help from PayPal whatsoever. So fuck PayPal and their "safety".

That PSU doesn't look like it's from Corsair. It's most likely some prebuild. Also, from the looks of it, there is a small chance that the GPU was shorted considering how close the GPU is from the PSU, and there is also a small chance that the GPU isn't inserted properly. If I remember correctly, if the CPU has an integrated GPU, the PC will still start if the dedicated GPU isn't working properly. IMO the guy has a problem and he's not aware of what it is, but he's blaming you.

Honestly, I don’t think that this is a scam, it looks to me as a simple user error but the guy thinks he knows what he’s doing.

When I bought my 5700 XT I purchased a 750W PSU (still using it with my 7900 XTX no problem btw), it was the Corsair TX-750M. And I doubt that this is a Corsair 650W PSU. To me it looks like he just went with the cheapest brand he could find and is now suffering the consequences of a shit PSU, the white light you can see on the GPU (as indicated by others) means it’s a power issue. Looking at the colours of the cables (and the entire PC itself) it shows me that the quality of said components are shit.

In the first few seconds of the video, you can see the Corsair logo. It is covered by, what I believe to be, a SSD they had to mount with double-sided tape. The NR200 can def fit an ATX PSU (just barely), but the case doesn't come with a frame for that size PSU. The PSU frame is one of the few places you can mount a SSD. Honestly, the buyer looks like they are doing what they can to reuse parts from an older build as they transition into a newer case. The PSU cables do look old AF, so it might be an old PSU and still the culprit.

Or if he is lucky it's just continously shorting, and that's why the pc stops. Why tf is the PSU is even there? Shouldn't it be in the other corner, or below the GPU?

That 2.5" SSD looks like it was placed there deliberately to hide the PSU's label. That LED on the GPU indicates it's not receiving enough power. My guess is that he's purposefully using an underpowered PSU, claiming his PC won't turn on because of it and trying to get you to accept a return. When he returns it and gets his money back, all you'll receive is a brick that weighs roughly the same as the GPU. This is why selling on the used market is a PITA, bunch of scammers and thieves.

It’s a little black switch surrounded by white, visible in :20 frame of video. People accidentally flip it during install sometimes and the results are exactly the same as what you are seeing. Flipping it back fixes it.

Changes profiles. Usually to an over clocked profile by default. Causes this exact issue because it’s running the wrong profile instead of the standard one with the tested settings.

Are you sure that it's not the 1x8+1x6-pin version of the card? The RX 5700 XT comes in both 8+6 and 2x8 versions, and the view is so obstructed that I'm only able to count by the wires rather than sockets.

But that aside, I agree; buyer has room to learn, it looks a bit like my first pc.

I recently changed a GPU un my PC and did the same thing. I don't know if is the solution. I unplugged the power supply, pressed 5seconds the power switch to let all power go. Then took out the rams and lastly the CMOS battery, then I put everything back again and it started. Maybe the bios cannot power on because it has detected a hardware change and some config is off?. Anyways this worked for me. Had the same problem with an i5 7400

Homie should have bought a real case before a real GPU. Either he has no idea where the PSU goes or he bought one of those cases that uses a special tiny PSU.

The PSU zip tied to the case does not instill confidence. Nor a proper case ground which is necessary.

So little clearance between power delivery connections on the back of the GPU.. Just a teensy bit of zip tie sag aaaand ZAPPPPP.

This is not a you or your GPU problem. This is a him problem.

That's an error code 255. More than likely the gpu isnt all the way in the slot it looks pretty cramped. Second look the back plate is shorting out. There are studs on the psu. Get a new case or put something non conductive between them. 25 year computer tech. that's a sad build.

I had this kind of issue. I had to replace my old OG Rampage Extreme.

With my Maximus IV Extreme was just a ram issue, fixed by adding the modules one at a time.

I suspect they did an unstable overclock and the PC fail to boot.

Most likely the power supply isn't providing enough power for the new GPU and everything else. One of my PCs did this a long time ago. The PSU can store a bit of extra charge but when it runs out of the excess it can't supply enough consistent energy to keep the power running. I would ask for wattage of the PSU.

It appears that they have the same power cable for the gpu (sometimes labeled VGA or PCIE on the connector) feeding both power ports on the GPU. Usually one gpu power cable has 8pin and 6pin connectors.

I have done this before and some larger GPU doesnt get enough power as they need two 8 pin connectors seperately ran to them from the PSU.

If there is a second VGA/PCIE power cable have them plug it into the second slot next where they have the 6pin currently plugged in and it should boot.

Considering that one of the pci-e cables isn't in the same mesh wrapping as the other, I can only assume hes using an adapter for the other power connection, which implies that this psu isn't made to support how much power hes putting into it or theres something wrong with the adapter. I have so many random pci-e adapter cables sitting around from builds I've flipped that look just like the cable on the right connector.

On second inspection it almost looks like the GPU could be touching the PSU. Also Im pretty sure that's a pos PSU and it looks like he has two connectors in the GPU are on the same cable. Maybe even the mother board is on the same cable also.

Whatever it is it does look like user error like other suggestions.

My bet is that this is a PSU making contact with the board issue, like others have said.

This looks like a Cooler Master NR200 case. The user should have an option to mount the power supply next to the motherboard , on the “back” wall of the case.

As it sits now, it looks like the PSU is mounted on the “front” wall, so the corner of the PSU is coming into contact with the power leads on the corner of the GPU.

Hopefully he still has that bracket for the PSU that hooks into the back wall. Because from what I can see this guy zip-tied the PSU to the front wall.

It's because he's pigtailing the gpu cables. 1 cable for each 12 volt rail. Buyer should hook the gpu up correctly and try again.

I could see Q-led indicators on mobo in the video. Generally third one from right in this perspective must be GPU. There were two lights being lighted so CPU and DRAM must be okay.

However, i think the problem migt be caused by pcie port. You should ask the buyer which mobo is being used.

gpus can absolutely make the pc unable to start. i had a rx 580 that unfortnuately got a short, and because of that short it wouldn't let the pc start.

As far as I know, the GPU shouldn't cause that. When the computer resets like that, it's usually improperly secured RAM. But it could be a multitude of things. If their computer starts without the GPU it could be faulty PSU. Or a problem with the motherboard

I sold a GPU on eBay, in the listing mentioned that it would need a decent PSU.

Guy buys it, it won't boot, just like this. "But my old card works". I suggest his budget PSU isn't up to the job, but no - card gets returned for refund.

Pop it back in a PC here, it boots perfectly. Sold it on eBay again, this time to a happy buyer.

So I end up losing a bunch on shipping because buyers can't comprehend that GPUs draw a lot of power and that cheap PSUs that say they are 750W probably aren't.

Good luck with your buyer, his rig does not scream "I take good care of my PC".

If the CPU has an igpu try without the GPU l, Also check if the power connectors are shorting Because of the PSU touching the GPU.
Ive had a similar issue. Fixed it by clearing CMOS ,removing both sticks of RAM and connecting each individually and checking.

Early in the video, you can see what looks to me like the Corsair ship logo on the PSU. Whether or not it's 650W is anyone's guess - but at least it does appear to be a new Corsair PSU. HOWEVER, you can't see the whole thing because it's partially covered by...zip-ties. I've worked on hundreds of PCs and I've never seen the PSU secured inside the case by zip ties instead of the standard screws. Plus the 2.5" SSD is just free floating. Not that it shouldn't work, but this PC was clearly assembled by someone that doesn't know how to assemble a PC.

As others have said, it's probably the PSU (new PSUs can be defective, too) - but it would be worth the try for them to reset the mobo BIOS (either remove the CMOS battery and utility power for a couple minutes, short the jumper, or there's a push-button reset).

Ask them if they can go to a computer store with the GPU, so that they can confirm there that the gpu is working properly. I know that would cost some money but would tell him that he pays when there's no problem with the card, and that you pay when the card is indeed defective.

This smells like a PSU problem to me.

5700 XT is only 225 watts and the i5 9400 is 65 watts. You absolutely do not need a 600w psu to run that set up. 500w should be more than enough.
