![I’ve only ever played Sticker Star, but I absolutely adore every aspect of this game. Convince me to play a different one.](https://preview.redd.it/mvgx0xb9tb9d1.jpeg?auto=webp&s=f87df94e4449d873564d9ed6e90987534ae5ebbe)
I’ll defend this game with my life
I’ll defend this game with my life
Sorry, I’m pretty new to the Paper Mario community in general, but yeah I’ve seen gameplay of Color Splash and it looks fairly interesting. I’m also debating buying TTYD on Switch, but Sticker Star’s probably in my top ten favorite games ever (a controversial take apparently) and I was a little worried the others wouldn’t hit that same spot with me
You have the benefit here of ignorance (not a bad thing) of the original games, of which Sticker Star was an undeniable downgrade from on what was to me an offensive level. It makes sense that you like it if you haven't played the others.
This makes sense. I know when a game departs from the other games in a franchise it usually doesn’t go over well, so I guess this is the case with Sticker Star. Even if I do play the other games though, I don’t think I’ll ever see my boy PMSS as anything less than what I see it as now.
Even if I do play the other games though, I don’t think I’ll ever see my boy PMSS as anything less than what I see it as now.
That's nostalgia, and that's perfectly fine. I hold Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story in extremely high regard because that's the first JRPG I ever played, a now-favorite genre of mine (though it does help that everyone considers it the best one lmao. I say it's Superstar Saga personally). I have a friend who likes Sticker Star despite all its obvious flaws and that's perfectly okay.
As for me? I have no stance on Paper Mario one way or another. I played the N64 one on and off via PC emulation/Virtual Console/NSO over the years before finally beating it on console last month, and I played TTYD once via Nintendont on a modded Wii before I gave up sometime in Chapter 2, before getting the Switch version and absolutely falling in love with it (still prefer the N64 one tho). The only Paper Mario I really played as a kid was Super, and while the story was super cool, I found the moment to moment basic platformer gameplay to be supremely boring. I haven't played anything past that so I can't really comment on the later games, but just watching people play them, doesn't look like it's for me.
Bottom line, you're totally allowed to like Sticker Star and hold it in super high regard. But there's a reason you do.
Oh for sure, nostalgia definitely plays a part. But I still play Sticker Star again from time to time and though you can tell it’s aged a bit, I still have a good time every time.
But nostalgia is one hell of a drug lmao.
Can confirm, I have played enough Super Mario Galaxy to the point I'm considering speedrunning it
I took some serious time learning to speedrun New Super Mario Bros Wii a few years back because it was one of the first Mario games I played and one of the first video games I ever played and it was such a fun time.
That game is genuinely a masterpiece.
I 100% galaxy twice. Once on wii and once on switch
Idk why
I've %100'd it on like 4 save files on Switch alone
If it's the first you played, it'll probably feel weird going back to others. I've been a Resident Evil fan since the beginning, and I can't imagine missing the first 3 and thinking 6 is the absolute best thing ever, but I have heard of it happening. No matter what, you'll probably always see PMSS as your first and "most influential," but I think you should give Color Splash a chance at the very least. I always felt it was a little similar to PMSS, but imo more fun. The humor is also fantastic. If you want something that's on Switch, TTYD is really awesome, and NSO has PM64 (My favorite)
Just buy TTYD immediately on Switch and be prepared for an epic journey that you’ll never forget, truly.
Do you enjoy RPGs? If so then 64 and TTYD are worth a shot. If you are unsure about spending the money, you could try Paper Mario 64 if you have the NSO expansion pass. It has similar gameplay to TTYD.
If you want something more like SS, then Color Splash or Origami King might appeal to you.
Ahhh, the youth discovering bits of my childhood. Please, please, we can only urge you to play TTYD so much. It is a staple of Gamecube gaming.
Nah, not youth but just haven’t been part of the Paper Mario discussion until since TTYD remake came out. And I’m starting to see a pattern with people’s most recommended game 😅
If you decide to buy it, please write a review post sharing your thoughts about the game after you beat it. Your situation is unique and we are all interested! :]
You got it!!
Yes, I'd love to hear your views too! Hope you enjoy if you decide to give it a go. :)
I’m also debating buying TTYD on Switch
What is there to debate about? It's a great game, you should get it👍
From what I remember, the leveling was too slow for me, especially considering the difficulty curve of the enemies. Does the switch version speed up leveling (perhaps with more exp dropping from defeating weaker enemies)?
No, the remake doesn't speed up the leveling. But unless you were actively avoiding most battles or using particularly suboptimal strategies, I don't know why you wouldn't be gaining enough XP to keep up. The game could actually stand to be more difficult, in my opinion, because throwing every level into BP can be very broken.
The game is much easier if you improve your reflexes. It's not a normal RPG where it's just totally turned based, there's a lot of timing elements. Since I'm used to that sort of thing the only boss I had an issue with was the final one, that was pretty stressful. Fun though.
If you have paid for the N64 games subscription on your switch, the first paper mario is available there so you won’t need to spend like $40-60 depending if you can find a used color splash copy. It started it all, so I always recommend it to people.
If sticker star is in your top ten, what are the other 9?
I grew up with TTYD and will stand by it's praise. But I also like Sticker Star. They're both very different games; TTYD has great plot and battle mechanics, but feels a loooooot more linear and "go here now here now here" compared to Sticker Star's "idfk, figure it out dude" gameplay style. Color Splash is the most like Sticker Star, Origami King is a middle ground between SS+CS and the TTYD formula (leaning more towards the former), and Super Paper Mario is it's OWN can of worms. Honestly, it all boils down to what interests you most in trying a new game!
I honestly liked Sticker Star. If you have the Switch, I'd recommend the OG Paper Mario 64 and TTYD before TOK or Super.
Hi, the only other Sticker Star fan here. Color Splash definitely has those vibes! The other games are good but very different in that the resource management is a lot less emphasized - but if you can get past that a lot of Sticker Star’s other strong suits are present in each one.
Bro sticker star isn’t even in my top 10 paper mario games… and there are only 6 of them
you won’t realize how mid it is until you play the other games in the series. Sticker star gets a lot of hate, its a solid game but feels incomplete in comparison to TTYD, 64, even super paper Mario even though its a completely different style
Another person said that “ignorance is bliss” in this situation and I think they were right, judging by other comments it’s not that Sticker Star is “bad”, it’s just not very good when compared to the other games.
Think terminator 3
On its own it’s an alright action movie
Compared to terminator 2 it’s crap
Thousand year door is the terminator 2 of the paper Mario franchise
Outdoes the original and makes the sequels look like crap when most of them would be alright movies on their own
That’s an amazing analogy actually
Never thought I’d here someone say they like that game so much but it’s kinda cool that someone can see something so cool out of a otherwise fairly mediocre game.
Color splash is a 9/10 game for me, and I’ve heard it’s pretty similar to sticker star, so if you like it I’d get color splash, so much fun
It’s only a controversial take because you haven’t played the others.
You have an opinion and you are absolutely entitled to it.
On a completely unrelated note…are you familiar with the concept of Stockholm Syndrome?
Is it something that the Dean created? Cause if not I don’t care.
This comment is streets ahead.
Coined and minted!
Lmao, you actually got a laugh out of me on this one. I realize by this point that this is apparently a controversial opinion but I really love Sticker Star, it’s probably my favorite RPG I’ve ever played, but I guess I need to expand my horizons a bit more 😅
It's not really an RPG though
Well first of all, happy cake day! Second, I know it lacks a lot of elements of a traditional RPG, I just call it that for simplicity sake lol
I will say, if you like Sticker Star, that is completely fine, and I'm glad you enjoy it! But I wouldn't say that necessarily means you should now try other RPGs, because you might not like them just as much. Simply due to the fact that Sticker Star really isn't an RPG. It's, at its core, an action-adventure game. And that's not a slight at it or an insult or anything.
It's like... if I like Call of Duty, that doesn't necessarily mean I'll like Metroid Prime. Even though they're both technically FPS games, they are entirely different gameplay styles. Anyway, point is, I'd recommend checking out more fun action-adventure games in loo of RPGs. Unless you know you like RPGs because of other ones you've played, Sticker Star just isn't a great precedent.
you can buy super paper mario used for the wii for 16 bucks and i know you have a wii cause you said so in another comment. its the opposite of sticker star (all story but mechanically not an rpg) so idk if you’d like it but i think it slaps
edit: i know some people don’t consider sticker star an rpg but it has rpg mechanics
I remember buying Wii games at Walmart and passing up both Super Paper Mario AND Smash Bros. Brawl, now I regret missing out on these games for so long. Fast forward and I’ve played Brawl but never ever touched SPM, so that’s a pretty good idea!
alright! i do ask that if you don’t like it (which is understandable, it’s not for everyone, but neither is sticker star) to not dedicate a bunch of hate towards it? thats my biggest fear when recommending it to people lol
Oh absolutely not, I try not to “hate” any game I play, and I mean that seriously because I’ve played some pretty terrible games and found good aspects in them. But you have my word, no hate will be spread 😂👍
Before I can convince you, I need to know what you're into. What are your favorite parts of Sticker Star - what about it do you like the most?
All of it honestly, but if I had to pick, I’d say the soundtrack (best of nearly every game I’ve played), battle system (collecting stickers and using them in battle was super satisfying to me) and the fact that while there were technically “levels”, it all felt like one big world because once you were done with a level, you may still need to go back there later on
Good news about the soundtrack: That’s a series staple. So no matter what that’s exactly what you’re getting.
As for the others… Due to the issues in getting CS and a Wii U, I almost want to say 64. Instead of stickers, you can get badges that are basically different attacks and passive buffs, except not one time use. You instead effectively run on an MP system.
TTYD also has this, but the main reason I recommend 64 more than TTYD is the world. In 64, you actually GO to these places. You cross the road out of the hub town and into the next town, you explore a forest on your way to a mansion
TTYD however is basically all just “take a pipe and you’re here now.” The world doesn’t feel nearly as connected as in 64. TTYD is still great, but I feel like 64 has a lot more of what you’re looking for.
That is some very good news indeed, the Sticker Star OST is life
Also thanks for the explanations! I’ll need to watch some gameplay of TTYD and 64, but both are feasible to buy for me so I don’t see an issue with getting both lol
Watching the gameplay definitely helps. While I do agree with the consensus on those two being the best in the series, there’s still a chance that some people simply don’t like the gameplay.
64 is available on switch online
Personally I’m hoping they remaster it given the success of Tyd
As for the others… Due to the issues in getting CS and a Wii U, I almost want to say 64.
Alternatively, Cemu. Probably one of the easiest to use Nintendo emulators, just make sure to go to view at the top left taskbar and enable the gamepad window.
Not to be basic, but in that case I think you'll really like the next game, Color Splash. It has great music, the card mechanic is similar to stickers but modified to be better, and the levels there are also part of an interconnected world that requires backtracking here and there.
That’s been the general consensus here, it’s a tragedy that the game’s not on Switch 😭 if they ever announce it to be coming to the eShop on Switch I’ll be first in line lmao
soundtrack
Oh well there you go, that's a reason to play Paper Mario: The Origami King.
This game arguably has the best OST out of any PM game, even things that are as stupid as supplies have the most insanenly BANGER themes that you wouldn't believe
The game also has an interconnected world that has areas you need to come back to later on, and not like ''levels'' per say, each chapter takes place in various big areas of the game, so it does feel more like you are on an adventure.
Definitely give it a try, you might end up liking it
if you like the soundtrack id recommend looking into origami king
that has a really good soundtrack
If you like Sticker Star, try playing Color Splash. The battle mechanics are almost exactly the same, the story is a little better, and the writing has some laugh out loud moments.
If you want to change the battle mechanics, I can't suggest playing The Thousand Year Door Remake enough. While there are some differences between the original version and the Remake, both TTYD games are masterpieces.
Well, the other Paper Mario games have kind of a different gameplay, so you could have really different experiences when playing the other games. Paper Mario 64 has a different art style and introduces you to the partner system you see in TTYD, so you could play it before it. TTYD midly the same as Paper Mario 64 in battle system, but it has different stories you see while playing (for example, when you finish a chapter you can play as Peach for a while and see how she tries to help you in your adventure) and has a really good story. Super Paper Mario is the only playformer in the series and has a really good story. Color Splash's characters have a very good sense of humor, introduces real water to the game and you can see Bowser's midly innocent side, 'cause all the struggles he does in the game aren't exactly his fault. And The Origami King has a totally different battle system from the other games and some very emotive moments and has tension moments too. It tries to re-incorporate the partner system with some characters that follow you in the adventure but don't continue with you all the way. So I think you could have a really good variety of experiences you could have while playing these.
Thanks for the super detailed response! All of these sound interesting, of course I can’t play Color Splash because of my lack of a Wii U but I’d like to eventually (emphasis on eventually lol) play all of them that I can, but this gives me a pretty good idea of what each game’s strong suit is.
You're welcome! Hope you can enjoy them ;)
I want to add that PM64 also has these little interludes with Peach, doing things like sneaking around, trying to help, cook and even play a questions game. All pretty fun by themselves 🤗
Yeah those are pretty good too, specially
I personally recommend Super Paper Mario. It's a bit of a change to more platforming aspects, but it's fairly fun and overall a great experience.
I'm genuinely curious. Could you tell me all the reasons why you love this game?
Really just the whole experience is amazing to me, but a few main points- * The soundtrack SLAPS * The inventory style battle system is really fun to me, as well as collecting stickers and using them on opponents * The level-style world map is really cool because you’re never really “done” with a level (i.e. the wiggler segment parts)
Interesting. I'm happy you enjoyed the game! Is there anything you think could've been done better in it?
Probably the length, the game feels really short to me. If I sit down and devote time to it I can usually complete it in an afternoon
I'll get back to you later, let me get on my computer before I convince you, I am only replying so that when I do get to my computer that this post is easier to find.
It’s nice to see someone put their opinion out there even knowing it isn’t the popular one. Gotta respect you fr
Much appreciated, I took a big risk and honestly I’m surprised everyone has been so nice!
Honestly I can just relate a lot, cause the first PM game I ever played was Super Paper Mario, with the second being Color Splash, which both aren’t that popular. Everyone was saying play ttyd, so I did on a laptop, and absolutely loved it, but then I lost my save, but I finally beat it on my steam deck with some hd textures and widecreen hacks. I love all the PM games, except sticker star because I haven’t played it, but I’ve been thinking about playing it cause I have a modded 3DS now.
I'm glad someone else actually enjoys Sticker Star.
AND I DONT CARE WHO KNOWS IT
You liked the worst game of the series. That means you'll probably like the others way more.
So here’s the situation.
Paper Mario 64 and The Thousand Year Door are turn based RPGs with some of the best stories in the whole wider Mario franchise. Then Super Paper Mario was kind of a platformer/action RPG and still had a great story. At this point in the games, the paper thing was mostly an art style/aesthetic thing, with only some impacts on gameplay/story here and there. Then Sticker Star changed the game and simplified the story and de-emphasized the combat so fans got really upset. It also emphasized the paper thing much more than the earlier games did.
Color Splash is usually regarded as having better writing than Sticker Star but still having a simple plot and still having gameplay that Paper Mario fans disliked, plus it focused heavily on paper again.
The Origami King is usually thought of as the best of the newer Paper Mario style. It has a more involved plot and good writing, and they have a battle system that some people enjoy (although it’s less popular than the 64 and TTYD battle system).
And now they made a remake of The Thousand Year Door, which is usually held up as the best classic Paper Mario.
SS love will always be very cool and based, but I'd like to see what you think of the other games. Please consider making some posts about your experience if/when you do play them!
You got it! I’m thinking about hitting up TTYD and Origami King on Switch soon
I’m one of the few who enjoyed origami king (my only paper Mario game before that was the Wii version which I LOVED.)
I’m in the same boat as you and Super PM was my second game and It far surpassed Sticker Star as my favorite PM game (Not that I don’t like Sticker Star, it’s just that it’s two entirely different games). It’s not based around turn based combat but more of a platformer though so get that in your head if you’re going to play it.
My game playthroughs went In the following order: Sticker Star -> Super -> Color -> Paper Mario (the first one) -> Thousand Year Door. I haven’t played origami king yet but from everything that I spoiled myself on it looks good but the battles are more of a puzzle which I would probably like.
Tbh i’d go for Super Paper Mario, Color Splash and Origami King. I’m a massive fan of the original 2, so i’d recommend those two on the switch but they’re turn based RPGs, the only two of the series that are that way, so you may not be into them too much.
honestly based opinion, the majority of the paper Mario community (from what I’ve seen) hates the modern trilogy because they deviated from the paper mario structure (and sticker star started that, so it gets a lot of the brunt of the hate) but that doesn’t mean they aren’t good games! as a color splash defender I would be honoured for you to play it.
No
Fair enough, I can’t make you lol
I love Sticker Star, too!
I recommend Origami King or TTYD.
My first introduction to paper mario was colour splash and like you even though the game is so controversial I adored everything about it. I've since played super paper mario and sticker star and if you count it Mario and Luigi paper jam. Atm I'm on the last part of origami king then next on the list is ttyd. Honestly if you loved sticker star you'll love the rest but colour splash is most similar to sticker star (I preferred colour splash. I felt after you found wigglers body parts in sticker star the rest of the game was rushed.) I feel those of us that were introduced to paper mario after ttyd are lucky because we can fall in love with it as a series whereas those that played ttyd door first have just been disappointed every other paper mario hasn't been on the same footing as ttyd.
I want to get to it eventually. Been playing lots of Mario RPGs lately
Did you ever need to look up on the internet how to progress?
Maybe once or twice, but I really, really enjoy challenging puzzles and/or secrets in video games. The “thing” stickers and all of their niche applications were super cool to me.
Awesome ! 😀👍 What was the hardest part of the game
Probably the fights with , when he it’s super annoying lol
I know it's already a cliche since every post seems to say the same thing in one form or another. However, you will be doing yourself a favor by playing TTYD. This is coming from someone who never played any game in the series. When the original game came out, I didn't own a N64 because I followed Final Fantasy 7 to Playstation (yup, I'm that old. I was there, Gandalf). However, I've heard numerous praises to the game, and again with TTYD. I thought then that I didn't miss much because those games wouldn't hold a candle to Super Mario RPG. It took 20 years for me to realize how wrong I was. TTYD is absolutely brilliant! In fact, I can't decide which is better between the TTYD Remaster and SM RPG Remake. In the end, it doesn't matter because the gamers win either way. Yes, I'm recommending you play both games.
Right now, I'm absolutely excited for the Mario & Luigi Brotherness. It's also going to be my first experience of the series.
I’ve played and loved Mario RPG, both the original and the remake, and fell in love instantly both times. And as far as M&L Brotherhood goes, I’ve also never played a M&L game but I’m pretty excited for the new one because it looks really interesting for a change.
Very true. I do have all of the Mario & Luigi ROMs but I never bothered playing them. I might go and see if I can purchase the physical carts for my collection, though (I didn't collect handhelds, only home consoles). Brotherness is a long way off, Q4 2024, I believe.
I love Sticker Star too.
Most people say it's the worst Paper Mario game but I really enjoyed it. I beat it twice. But I also don't compare any 1 PM game to another. I just play them and enjoy them for what they are.
My favorite is Super Paper Mario though.
I ABSOLUTELY ADORE EVERY ASPECT OF THIS GAME TOO!
YES SIR! THATS WHAT WE LOVE TO SEE!
I grew up on Sticker Star and loved it, but Origami King dethroned it as my favorite Paper Mario. I haven't had a chance to play the older ones yet so I can't say anything on them unfortunately, but I've heard nothing but good things.
Sticker Star is a really adorable game, I still have to play more.
I do wonder how you love every aspect of it. Especially the story and the characters, but I'm glad you do.
Anyway, I think that you would be able to enjoy pretty much all Paper Mario game. The first two one are very accessible, Color Splash is very similar to Sticker Stars but better in my opinion. And I think you would be able to enjoy Super and Origami King as well
Probably just because I usually try not to read into or study games I play too much, I usually just play the game to enjoy it without focusing too much on story and character depth. I know Sticker Star’s a little lackluster in both departments, but there’s something about the characters like Kersti and all the different toads and the story of the sticker comet that I just love. It’s charming and it’s fun and I’m all for it
Battle system sucks but the rest was genius (i still hate you giant sheep sheep)
The big feesh is the bane of my existence lol, but the boss at the end of that world () has one of the best boss themes I’ve ever heard in any game so it’s worth
I actually don't hate sticker star either, I can think of MANY, MANY worse games that I have played. I don't think it's perfect, I do remember getting really bored towards the end of the game on a replay, but I don't think that the gameplay is as intolerable as people say it is, even if it's not the most in-depth gameplay style ever. But you don't need crazy in-depth gameplay to be enjoyable.
As a writer though, I really didn't like the writing in that game, Kersti was annoying, and it was such a huge missed opportunity for Bowser to never speak a word when he is consistently one of the funniest characters across Mario spinoff games where he talks.
Happy to see that you are so bold in your opinion! I would be terrified sharing this, considering how unpopular love for Sticker Star can be, especially after Chuggaaconroy's 2 hour long public defamation of the game. You should try Super Paper Mario! It's very different, but it's probably my favorite game in the series!
Oh trust me, I was pretty nervous 😅 but I figured there HAD to be at least some people out there who felt the same, and who could recommend me on which game to play next. I still have a working Wii so Super Paper Mario definitely sounds like something I’d try soon!
Just don’t, simple as that, play what you like :D
This is a good opinion and honestly I’ve replayed Sticker Star like five times 😅 I just thought I’d try to branch out a little, y’know?
Thanks lol, I love sticker star aswell, I gotta recommend color splash too since they’re very similar
I’ve heard that a lot, the only issue is that I don’t have a Wii U :( I’d love to play it though, I’m just not gonna buy a Wii U for the sole purpose of Color Splash lol
Fair enough lmao that’s not a very smart purchase
I really hope it comes to Switch one day, or the Switch successor, even if it’s only digital
Same tbh, it needs more love for real
You adore a game in a particular series, and you want people to convince you to play other games in that same series? Is that what you’re asking?
Sure, I’ll have crack: play another game in the series because obviously you like that kind of game.
I liked Sticker Star. It’s also my least favorite game in the series. The reason people dislike it isn’t because it’s a bad game - it’s not. It’s because in a series with games like TTYD and Super Paper Mario (the latter of which has one of the best stories in any game I’ve ever played), a game like Sticker Star just can’t compete.
Color Splash will probably scratch the same itch as Sticker Star so play that next if you can! PM64 is good but also a little more barebones just due to being a N64 game. Still fantastic, but if you’re not tryna run through the whole series then I’d highly recommend TTYD, either the remake or emulating the original (lmk if you need help setting an emu up!). Super Paper Mario is pretty different than every other game but retains some of the DNA of the first two and again has one of the best stories I’ve seen in any game ever. A Mario game with things to say about the nature of love, coercion, loss, death, and destiny. Phenomenal.
I’m heavily considering buying TYYD and Origami King at this point, I can’t play Color Splash because it’s not available on any of my consoles, and honestly I think it may be worth booting up my Wii for the first time in years just to play Super Paper Mario, I’ve heard some really good stuff on it on this post alone
Sticker Star is by far the worst game in the series. There's your motivation to play the others.
That’s kinda what I’ve heard, but what exactly makes the others so much better? Sticker Star’s soundtrack, character design, story building, and battle system are all at least an 8/10 for me but maybe I’m not that picky lol
If the battle system in Sticker Star is an 8/10 for you, TTYD is gonna blow your mind.
like every aspect is better in the other Paper Mario games.
Paper Mario was known for it's unique characters and beloved partners that accompany you on your journey. The story in the first Paper Mario wasn't anything too too special but in TTYD it was bumped up big time, and they peaked with the story in Super Paper Mario. All 3 first games have such beloved characters with unique designs and new worlds. The battle system was perfect as well. Giving you badges to strategize your game plan and also letting you choose which stats to upgrade when you level up.
Sticker Star has....none of this. It's just a basic story and there are NO unique characters outside of Kersti, who is easily one of if not the worst Paper Mario character. The battle system is so bad that it's actually better to avoid battles instead of engaging in them. There's no star points, so you don't level up anything besides health. And battling just gives you coins that you use to buy more stickers. It's an endless cycle of uselessness. The bosses are defeated using various "thing" stickers that give you NO context ahead of time that you'll need them. So basically to new players, you go in to battle, die because you don't have the right thing, backtrack through a level if you can remember where it is, get the thing, and use it to beat the boss. Sticker Star also introduced level based gameplay instead of a vast open connected world.
It's just...bad. They took everything great about the first 3 games and threw them away. Color Splash at least has humor, but gameplay wise, it's no better. Origami King would be so much better if the battle system wasn't some weird gimmick. But that game is beautiful as has very good writing still. But the first 3 games are peak Paper Mario.
If you have only played Sticker Star and you love it so much, I can't say for certain if you'll like the first 3 games, but they are objectively better. Give em a try for sure.
I definitely see what you’re saying about the battle system being useless, but as a new player, I actually enjoyed being “in the dark” so to speak, I hate it when games guide the player too much or blatantly point out everything you need to do, so figuring out which Thing sticker went where was a blast to me. But since I haven’t played any of the others, I can see how I’m in a sort of “ignorance is bliss” situation here. Thanks a lot!!
If you want and are bored, look up Don Shnack on youtube. I don't know what your youtube tastes are like, but he just did an video on this game and its issues.
Noted, thanks a lot!
have you ever played another video game before
Many, and I’m no critic, I enjoy just about every game I play because I’m not judging it I’m just playing for fun and Sticker Star is definitely fun
Color splash is literally just Sticker Star but better in every way, if you like Sticker Star you will love Color Splash
Try origami king :D
I remember Origami King coming out and being super curious about it but I ended up passing it up, I’m really considering getting that and TTYD for Switch and just going on a week-long binge of Paper Mario games lol
Let's gooooo I found a sticker star lover
I like sticker star too :)
My brethren!!!
I’ll stand with you, fellow Sticker Star enjoyer.
You and I against the world fr
🤝🏻
I may not like Sticker Star but I am glad someone enjoys it. If I could recommend another game, I would recommend Bug Fables as it’s a neat Paper Mario-inspired RPG
I think another person recommended Bug Fables, I might check it out
i’d say play color splash, to see how they evolve the sticker star formula. then either finish the trilogy or play the n64 release to see how different they are
You should play color splash. It's basically sticker star, but on the wii
I remember getting the game on launch and both adoring the sticker idea but it wearing off so quickly
I also enjoyed Sticker Star, but you should try the rest of the Paper Mario franchise. Color Splash is my absolute personal favorite.
If you really like Sticker star, then I suggest you should play either Color Splash or ttyd.
I'm someone who stands up for color splash and I always say to just try it, and ttyd is genuinely one of my favorite games of all time, up there with Hollow knight, Pikmin 4, Yo-kai watch 2, and Inscryption. The only problem is that getting color splash and a Wii U, if you don't have one is pretty difficult and Wii U emulators are hard to find. Other than that, Origami king is pretty good but has a very hit or miss battle system (you either love it or despise it) 64 is good but emulation is pretty much the only way to play it now, and Super, while good can be boring and really simple at times.
I say to just try them and see what you do and don't like.
I loved the first one and TTYD I just loved how much character the first one had, the star spirits, Shy guy land And the cloud garden
Same here! Next one I’m gonna try is Color Splash so maybe you should too :D
I'm not the only one who likes this game 😭 I love the battle system it really makes you think about what you could/should do.
Before anyone says anything, I've played thousand year door so much I've memorized nearly every puzzle and that's not an exaggeration, I legit played the remake on pure memory
If you like sticker star ur gonna LOVE colour splash. Both games are truly beautiful :D Buuut ttyd’s story telling is just on a different level. With all that being said i can guarantee that both are gonna be fun!! :3
Not a bad choice, color splash for the Wii U is a good one too… same concept, you paint with hammer smash’s
They made a sequel to this game called Color Splash, if you love Sticker Star than you’ll adore Color Splash too (you said any Paper Mario game)
I'd say play The Origami King if you have a Switch. The plot is much more fulfilling and the writing is great! It builds on the "literally paper" thing Sticker Star started in a very clever way.
Uh no I deleted my account with the game so yeah I can't even play it anymore and I am sad about it
play ttyd, it's on switch
I had fun with the game despite the hate it gets
I loveeee sticker star, you should definetly play the other games. If you want one similar to sticker star I recommended origami king, also prob color splash but I haven’t played it. Also paper Mario 64 and ttyd are classics and I also love super paper Mario but it’s quite different than the other games
ik my friend recently made his game ranking backwards but then I looked back up at sticker star again because I played through is recently, I actually can say I do adore the game as itself
I played this one and the TTYD remake.
Both are good, but the "I want to meet Luigi" quest ruins the entirety of TTYD. from a 10 down to a 5.
Poor guy almost had an existencial crisis.
If you like sticker star then you should play color splash
If you have the NSO expansion you can try out Paper Mario from the N64 for free! Give that one a go. If you don’t like it, then you don’t have to worry about buying TTYD for full price. Not saying you have to enjoy N64 to enjoy TTYD but it’d give you an idea of what to expect.
Vivian best girl go play ttyd. remake or not idc
I guess I could buy the original and play it on my Wii but I’d probably get the remake lol
the remake is just a straight upgrade from the original, visually and content-wise
would definitely recommend the remake, if only for the QOL improvements.
Same. We might wanna run
It’s okay we can be Sticker Star’s strongest soldiers, we can take ‘em
On another note, try saying Sticker Star’s strongest soldiers five times fast lmao
By the way sticker star and color splash are one of the best music in paper mario series
Sticker Star’s OST was a MASTERPIECE
✨ Shiny Gooper Blooper my beloved ✨
Has anyone tried saying please?
If not, please
I’ve finally found another person who genuinely likes sticker star?!?!?!
I have to confirm something… do you think that Luigi mansion dark moon is the best game in the series?
Oh god, I feel like this is a test…
But to answer your question, yes, without a doubt
I knew it… we’re doppelgängers
Sounds kinda like if somone ever only eaten poop and never tried real food
Dang okay lmao, I really don’t see a single problem with Sticker Star but I guess it’s just because I haven’t played the others, 10/10 game IMO
I'm honestly jealous you can experience the Paper Mario series for the first time. You don't know what you're missing
Sticker star has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. I absolutely still think it is the worst of the six games by far but I still do have some fun playing it. If you like sticker star that much then you will LOVE the other games. Color splash might be the next one to check out for you, followed by Origami king. Then check the absolutely goated original trilogy
I’ll probably have to play the first three first due to my unfortunate lack of a Wii U, but Sticker Star will forever be a favorite of mine, even if the others end up being better
I say if you really enjoyed Sticker Star, and want to play a game similar to it, but better, Color Splash is reasonably the next one to try out
I would really love to play Color Splash because everyone says it’s similar to Sticker Star but I don’t have a Wii U 😩 and since the online functionality ended on it, there’s really no reason to buy one at this point. Maybe like ten years from now you can find one for super cheap and then I’ll finally get my Color Splash lol
I'm not an expert in this but I have seen people play it on pc. Nothing official. Just what I've only seen.
Play color splash, it’s basically this but better
Well what aspects do you like from Sticker Star? I can understand your point a hit since it wad also my introduction to paper Mario. And while I personally liked the paper esthetic, getting rare stickers and trying to figure out secrets. It really lacks in some other aspects.
Most people cite liking TTYD for the characters and NPCs, since it's more varried and not just toads. While others may like Oragami king for the asthetic, music and presentation.
I'd say if you like RPG elements of Combat, Equipment, Level Ups and Party Members: Play Thousend year door
If you prefer asthetics, music and more grandious spectacles with less combat, then play Origami King.
Or Play Paper Mario 64 to see where it started. (Leabing more towards TTYD)
or play the indie game "Bug Fables"which is a spiritual successor of TTYD, but with, in my opinion, better designed areas and more likeable characters.
I really enjoyed the inventory style battle system and collecting stickers to use, but everything was a hit for me. Thanks for the recommendations, I think I’m probably gonna go to TTYD first and then Origami King, and if I’m still enjoying it then maybe it’ll be worth buying the NSO expansion for 64.
For the inventory battles system, I recommend checking out Color Splash, as it operates similarly.
Color Splash improves a lot of things in Sticker Star that you already love.
If you like sticker star color splash is literally they made sticker star and improved it. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but not jumping into different gameplay/ genres that’s probably the closest, if you have a switch there’s 64 on the eso 64 emulator, there’s origami king, and TTYD. So it hard to say which one you should try of those because like of TTYD some like 64 more some like TTYD, OK isn’t for me but a lot of people like it. It’s down to personal preference that’s why me and most would recommend you the one that closest to the one you like so far.
Hold up guys, isn’t it kind of cruel to tell them to play the other games? They’ll never be able to enjoy Sticker Star again.
Sticker star ks the worst game in the series by a mile This is not to make you feel bad this is to explain how good the other games are
Don’t play another one the paper Mario fans are wild out here
The 1st 3 ones are much better. If you like this one, you will surely like the others ones.
That includes Mario RPG as part as the "Mario Story" series since its a "spiritual succesor", I would skip Color splash since its paper sticker star, meh, And the Origami king its meh as well.
You sir/maam, are sick in the head
If loving Sticker Star is a condition, I never want to be normal
Finally, someone who enjoys the game
With a passion
I too love sticker Star, you aren’t alone in this
They hate us, for we speak the truth
Sticker Star outside the context of the Paper Mario series, I can see why one would find it charming. That said, it was the first Paper Mario game to focus exclusively on pre-existing Mario characters, to a fault, as well as actively choosing to simplify and not focus on the story, when past games in the series all fleshed out the Marioverse with new, often bizarre, characters, taking you to unexpected places like fighting arenas in the sky, giant toyboxes, and feudal Japanese styled kingdoms on the brink of apocalypse. The stories got more ambitious with each entry to the point where I'd consider the third game a genuine Shakespearean epic. And then we went from that to... the most basic Mario tropes ever. Grassland with Goombas. Desert with Pokeys. Forest with poison. Snow. Jungle. Airship & Bowser's Castle. The characters are regular Toads without names, the only original character is the token sidekick who joins Mario, and all of this is admittedly intentional and by design, an active effort to move away from what previous games were prioritizing. That's why it left such a sour taste in the mouths of fans who loved the previous games. At least for me. Other people may cite the battle system as the thing that killed it but for me it was absolutely the sanitization.
I'd recommend checking the first 3 games out. TTYD is the best showing of all Paper Mario's best qualities imo, but Super is my personal favorite. 64 was a solid first entry and laid the groundwork for many beloved traditions the next two games, especially TTYD, maintained & expanded on. I'd actually probably recommend starting with 64 since IMO in terms of story, it's what Sticker Star wanted to emulate but failed due to being restricted in characters so badly. 64 is full of creative spins on classic Mario settings & creatures. It follows a traditional plot where Bowser kidnaps Peach & Mario has to save her, but that isn't why the game is great. It has one of the richest, liveliest depictions of life in the Mushroom Kingdom with tons of unique NPCs, allies who join your quest, and higher stakes than a typical Mario romp due to Bowser also stealing the wish-granting Star Rod and capturing the Star Spirits who safeguard it and grant all the wishes of the world. It also has really creative bosses like a TMNT-inspired group of Ninjakoopas who initially try to disguise themselves as Bowser with a very shoddy cardboard replica of him, a giant "invincible" creature who eats Boos, and a faceless Crystal King in an ice temple. That's the Paper Mario difference.
I hope this doesn't come off as me saying you're wrong for liking Sticker Star, outside context of the previous games it definitely has charm that I can understand drawing you in. It has a great soundtrack & visual style and the diorama look works really well on the 3DS. I'm just trying to explain how much more this series has to offer when it doesn't have restrictions placed on it. I think in some timeline out there, a better version of Sticker Star that wasn't restrained by stubborn brand-obsessed executives exists, and god I wish I could play that.
Honestly try and play the first game it may be a lil different but trust me u get quickly used to it
It means that you have a good taste and like creativity and innovation :) You could play Colour Splash next or one of my favourite Mario series of all time, the Mario and Luigi games!
Well, if you liked Sticker Star, you’ll definitely like Color Splash. I’d say play that one next.
But of course, this isn’t a Paper Mario discussion without me urging you to play The Thousand Year Door.
