Howdy! Me and my S/O plan on doing a 2-3 month overlanding excursion from New England to the west coast and back. We have most essentials and utilities we would need. Ie: stoves, toiletries, food, self defense options, solar gen, and various other camping equipment. However, still looking for general recommendations for the “cooler/not necessary but definitely improves the overall experience items” and of course any tips or tricks for us as this is our first outing of this type. Thanks in advance to all who respond!
Sometimes just the hitch in the receiver is a (no pun intended) pain in the ass. Could not tell you how many times I’ve had to remove the hitch because it was trenching everywhere. If you plan on traveling BLM roads in Utah/Nevada there will be a ton of dry and running river beds with steep approach angles. Just as an FYI.
Several manufacturers make a rack the bolts on your spare tire carrier and will fit most of your things on it. American adventure labs or Garvin, to name two of many. The other posters are correct, any off roading in the western US will involve dry river beds with steep approaches as they are not dry all year long.
I have a 2 door I use for camping. Weight and space are always an issue . But can work just fine. I had thus drawer system built by Las Vegas overlanding, first 2 door one that he made. Packs a lot of things in.
I tried to add a picture, but Reddit is not playing well tonight, I will still try later
Really nice we made a 3 drawwe system with tracks amd had the bottom part extend out to use for cooking or washing dishes..damn I miss getting on the road.
Kinda a mess but I take my two doggos too
Samesies!
Did you DIY the led strips? Making mine was actually a fun electrical project for once lol
Ur canopys way bigger
That's awesome, I wouldn't be happy without them. That looks like a great setup.
Ditto with the Snowdog!
Please upload a video of that fridge linkage working. Looks wild
I will see what I can do. But you can see it at www.thebushcompanyusa.com. then look at the MSA Fridge slide. They have a power version also.
I had a hitch carrier for a 2k mile trip. It started to bend down. Maybe it was crap, or the hitch extender combo was bad, but just beware of something like that.
I would recommend ditching the hitch storage and come up with an internal storage and move the weight more over the rear axle.
That weight distribution is horrible to drive with, and trying to do basic trails are going to be cumbersome as you smash it on ever minor dip and ledge.
How do you go managing all that weight? Afaik 2 doors were fairly limited in terms of payload.
It looks like this tent is made of good material, how windproof is it?
So far so good, waterproofing is decent, it’s got all 4 sides openable, all sides have blackout and mosquito netting options, comes with a 2in memory foam mattress, condensation pad, and and felt mat just for padding. Included is a led strip affixed to the passenger side of the tent, on the same side is a 2x marine 12v “cigarette lighter” style plugs as well as 2x USB-A chargers that you can power through a connection on the bottom of the tent. Very little movement besides the open awnings even with 15+mph winds. Additionally with my S/O sitting in it rocking back and forth, the top bit would wiggle slightly but not concerning it for how much she was trying to move it, and I was actually astonished at the lack of movement to the vehicle itself, even with her rocking back and forth there was the worlds slightest creaking coming from one of the support bolts but nothing structural. Honestly man, it’s been about 2 weeks that we’ve had it, I’ve had it just popped up on the car the entire time because it unfortunately due to our own negligence got wet on arrival. So with it being rainy and windy for the past 3 days it’s been fine.
Are you putting doors back on?
Yup just enjoying a little bit of the New England summer prior to the begging of the trip
so nice, the roof is big enough to set up a tent.
How much was that tent? It really looks sick..I used to have an excel prep list, ill see if I find it.
Exactly $1300 w/ shipping 1099 for the tent 199 shipping. Got it on Amazon
Items name to avoid dropping a link: “Rooftop Tent, Naturnest Roof top Car Tent Hard Shell for Camping, Pop Up Rooftop Tent For Jeep Wrangler Van SUV Truck Bed Tent Roof Top with Mattress, LED Strip, Ladder, USB Module, 2-3 People”
Thanks love...r u guys posting ur trip online?
Sorry for the late response, I meant to get back to you sooner, yea kinda strange but I already had a TikTok channel so we’re just going to be posting casual updates as we go to that. If you’re interested it’s “18ga_or_bust”. I used to be an educational channel for emt/paramedic/firefighters hence the name reference to a 18 gauge IV needle haha.
I wouldn't keep it on the outside, but a 12v refrigerator would be the first thing I go for. Not dealing with ice (and the risk of cross contamination when something inevitably leaks) is a game changer.
Upvote for raised white letters.
Hitch carrier is going to absolutely wreck your departure angle if you plan to do any real trails.
Other than that the roof top tent looks great!
